To be furious SIL woke us up at 6AM?

We had a chaotic couple of days and late nights albeit lovely. SIL who lives abroad calls at 6am this morning just to say hi. Dh told her can he call back later as too early and she says oh sorry didn't realise Uk was that early.

I haven't been able to go back to sleep since and I was really looking forward to a lie in this morning. Aibu to be furious that she couldn't even be bothered to calculate the time difference?

She usually never calls and when she does it's either when she wants help with something or to ask a question. I want my sleep back!!!Angry

Not for some people! Once I'm awake, I'm awake and that's it. It's crap.

I'm the same but I can snooze a little if I use certain techniques

MissTrip82 · 26/12/2022 14:12

This has happened so many times over the years because we live 9 (or 11) hours ahead of UK time. People just don’t think. Very annoying.

My phone is never on silent; even when I’m not on call, I’ve spent too much of my working life calling relatives to tell them a loved one is seriously Iill in icu and getting no answer. I would struggle to forgive myself if I missed seeing a loved one before they died because my phone was on silent. Not having it on silent is not an open invitation to everyone to call me up at antisocial times.

notacooldad · 26/12/2022 14:15

They expect employees to be on call 24/7 on their personal phones?

Surely thats not normal is it, what kind of job does he do?
He's one of those MN husbands who has a "very important job"
I think the OP likes to dramatize. No one works 24/7. Also to be 'furuious' most people on sure, would mutter 'ffs' or similar and have a chat and relax.
We've has our share of drunken phone calls from overseas over the years. Sure I've been miffed, but never furious!

LizzieW1969 · 26/12/2022 15:48

@notacooldad

I agree with you. I think the OP is well justified in being annoyed as it was inconsiderate of her SIL not to work out the time difference when deciding when to call the UK. It was hardly a new thing for her having lived overseas for several years.

But IMO it is an overreaction to be ‘furious’ about it.

XmasDone · 26/12/2022 15:58

Thanks all. I must admit I was furious when I got woken up this morning but since then I've calmed down thanks to you guys.

I think as some of you have said it was more of an annoying event than an infuriating one (although that's what I felt like at the time as I'd been so sleep deprived).

If I was to tell someone in RL I would probably laugh about it.

Sometimes you just want to vent about something before you react to these things!

It would piss me right off op. Once I'm awake I can't get back to sleep. If I was the sort of person who could roll over and nod back off I wouldn't mind some much, but a lie in when my body allows it (often id love to sleep longer) is precious and yeah, this would annoy me!

AlbertaWildRose · 26/12/2022 16:12

I completely understand, OP. My family overseas would often call me on the landline in the middle of the night because they were too lazy to check the time difference. It drove me absolutely crazy.

Aintnosupermum · 26/12/2022 16:18

I’m up at 4am for work and I only call people in Europe or ME because it’s a 6/7/9hour time difference. I do sometimes text colleagues who I know are also awake. I follow the rule that unless it’s a true emergency, I do not call or text people outside the hours of 8am-8pm.

Aintnosupermum · 26/12/2022 16:21

Forgot to add…

My choice to live in a different time zone doesn’t mean I get to call people before 8am. On a Sunday or bank holiday I wouldn’t call before 10am. My Dad calls early on a Sunday and I just don’t answer. I’ve earned my lie in until 7.

There can be calls from numbers he doesn't have on his phone so can't do this unfortunately Sad

So he routinely takes calls through the middle of the night for work………?

Or does he actually never take calls in the middle of the night for work?

XmasDone · 26/12/2022 17:08

@HitMeWithAHotNoteAndWatchMeBounce he does take calls in the middle of the night, although not every night. He usually picks it up and goes to another room, and when it's say 2 or 3am I can go back to sleep relatively straight away.

I would rather not say which profession though

Then it’s absolutely boggling that his work don’t provide him with a phone.

Get him to ask for one. Quite why he hasn’t thought to do this himself long before now is totally Confused

I would say most of his colleagues are in the same situation and sadly that would mean more money coming out of taxpayer's money.

Easy mistake to make. I've got confused before with the 8 hour time difference between west coast Canada and here. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I think you need to chill.

Its really commonplace these days, particularly in the public sector. Its become common for many of my blue chip clients since the bulk of work calls use VOIP instead of telephony.

It really doesn't matter exactly what time someone is called or how often -the point is if your job is to be on call 24 hours you have to be on call 24 hours - you don't just get to switch the phone off between 12 and 6 just because nobody called the last few nights.

You still could have gone back to bed and snoozed.

This.

'Christmas is all about family'.....and you translate that into it being fine to ring a family member at the crack of dawn. In fact, waaay before dawn.

Wow!!

Actually I don’t see the problem it’s his sister ringing from across the wirk and she’s making a mountain out of a molehill

Remagirl · 26/12/2022 17:55

Phone back tomorrow at 6am her time Grin

Kacy75 · 26/12/2022 18:00

World* and it’s hardly before dawn! Most with kids or pets are starting to rise yes it’s inconvenient I agree but to go online and act furious is in my opinion totally over reacting. 4am I could understand but 6 whilst early is hardly worth getting your knickers in a twist over. Op seems like she already has issues with sil

UsingChangeofName · 26/12/2022 18:06

YANBU.
I too would be furious at being woken up at 6am for no reason.

If she has lived abroad for some years, it shouldn't be too difficult to know what the time is here. Even if she got mixed up between the Summer and Winter time differences, 7am would be too early for a 'general 'Happy Christmas' chat phone call.
It's just selfish.

GerronBuzanDoThaWomwok · 26/12/2022 18:32

do you often lie in bed raging about other people not meeting your standards ? 🙄

Oh please. As if you’d be happy with being woken up that early when you want a lie in. Some people on this site just like to argue for the sake of it.

ACynicalDad · 26/12/2022 18:35

Mildly pissing off, no need to post about it on the internet. But for god measure cut off all contacts and change your phone numbers.

motleymop · 26/12/2022 18:44

This sort of thing would wind me up no end before I had a child. Now, 6am and an acceptance of never having a lie in is just life!!
