To be furious SIL woke us up at 6AM?

We had a chaotic couple of days and late nights albeit lovely. SIL who lives abroad calls at 6am this morning just to say hi. Dh told her can he call back later as too early and she says oh sorry didn't realise Uk was that early.

I haven't been able to go back to sleep since and I was really looking forward to a lie in this morning. Aibu to be furious that she couldn't even be bothered to calculate the time difference?

She usually never calls and when she does it's either when she wants help with something or to ask a question. I want my sleep back!!!Angry

There's another Bank Holiday tomorrow, so hopefully another chance at a lie in then. Any chance of a nap during the day today?

I have my phone in Do Not Disturb mode overnight but set so that calls or texts from certain numbers would get through (my parents, son, daughter, husband, brother). Basically the people who would only call between 11pm and 6am in an emergency and who I would want to help. Not much use to OP's husband, but might be something to consider for others if you haven't come across this before.

Daffodilis · 26/12/2022 08:39

It's not too healthy getting furious over something so pathetic, chill

Undertheoldlindentree · 26/12/2022 08:41

She's made a slight miscalculation. Thankfully 6am isn't the middle of the night and she's not to know you were looking forward to a lie-in.

IglesiasPiggl · 26/12/2022 08:41

That's definitely irritating, as she doesn't even have to calculate the time difference, anyone can surely Google "Time in X location" and it is literally right there in front of you. As a PP said, I bet it was just convenient for her to call then. It's happened though, so try not to let it affect your morning.

Thanks. He would have Sil for emergency calls. We jumped up and tried to find the phone so it kept ringing. He asked whether everything was ok. It was far from an emergency.

Yes, furious is a massive overreaction

It’s not a massive reaction. I sleep badly these days and I know how OP feels. If I’m woken up, I can’t get back to sleep and I feel terrible the rest of the day.

Yes, but your husband's sister would be on the list?

Why isn't the phone somewhere handy if he needs to keep it on for work?

Notonthestairs · 26/12/2022 08:44

Oh for goodness sake of course SIL should have spent 20 seconds checking the time in the UK.

Otherwise it would be perfectly fine to ring at 2am/4am etc.

It's not especially unusual to assume somebody might fancy a lie in in Boxing Day either.

Yes exactly! I guess her self centred nature has been ok-ish until now but this time it really got meBlush

Oh that’s annoying. Furious might read as an exaggeration but I get it, OP. I was woken up at 8am by the upstairs neighbours renovating their flat. The banging is so loud and I haven’t slept properly in over three months, I was so looking forward to a lie in these couple of days. I am indeed very angry because my sleep plans have gone tits up. 6am would’ve killed me.

XmasDone · 26/12/2022 08:45

@Mummieslncorporated because he's not particularly organised and falls asleep on his phone sometimes. He's not perfect

PritiPatelsMaker · 26/12/2022 08:46

I think it's how you react that's the issue. Could you not just make yourself a cuppa and read on bed for a bit?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/12/2022 08:46

Not in OP's circumstances. Possibly in mine, as my parents are very elderly and my Dad's health is declining fast.

PriamFarrl · 26/12/2022 08:49

I’m with you op. It would take her two seconds to check the time.

NoSquirrels · 26/12/2022 08:50

YABU to be furious, but it’s because you know that when he does call back she’ll want something annoying, and then you’ll be doubly cross.

Have a nap later.

Maybe it's me then.. DH and I did the cooking and the usual stuff for Christmas, hosted for 12 people, kids running about. I had a bad stomach ache but did it as couldn't really cancel.

As I said I was really looking forward to having a lie in as we've been so busy with the build up to Christmas. We are not close to Sil.

Why hadn't DH put his phone on silent then?

Your anger here is misplaced. It's DH's fault, sorry.

MaggieFS · 26/12/2022 08:53

I'd get very annoyed at this. Phone her back in the middle of her night!

MaggieFS · 26/12/2022 08:55

(And it's not that hard to do. I was brought up in another country, pre-Google, and was perfectly able to work it out as a ten year old. She was just being thoughtless which was unkind).

Zanatdy · 26/12/2022 08:56

Quite annoying but furious? No

Brefugee · 26/12/2022 08:57

I'd have been really cross to. And because i am petty and vindictive (and can also never get back to sleep once awake) I'd call her at 5am her time on Sunday. Even if i had to stay up late. Grin

Anniegetyourgun · 26/12/2022 08:59

I think OP has every right to feel furious - or however else she feels. She doesn't appear to have blasted back at the caller or even spoken to her, she's not planning petty revenge etc, which would have been an over-reaction; she's just had her sleep disrupted for no good reason when she's tired and ill. So no, furious is not an over-reaction, it's just a reaction. Hopefully she'll catch up on the sleep tonight.

80sMum · 26/12/2022 08:59

Woeman · 26/12/2022 08:26

I think that if you haven't put your phones on silent, then that's your look out. If it's on the landline, then that's totally shit of her.

But if it's in silent mode, you won't be able to receive an emergency call. What if your family needed to contact you urgently during the night?

I put my phone into a customised focus mode overnight, so I don't get random notifications, but the phone itself is always live.

It’s Boxing Day, she’s made a silly error. Get over yourself!
