Ds 13 got a new graphics card. His dad and me have no clue about stuff like that so asked the computer savvy expert in CEX where we bought it from. It was about £130. Dh asked specifically if it was right for our PC etc and how easy it was to fit. He was told really easy.
Fast forward to today old graphics card out, new 1 in but it won't work. Haven't a bloody clue. It won't connect to the monitor it says no signal. Now old 1 won't go back in so no PC at all. Poor DS is putting a brave face on but he was so excited for this. Evri lost 1 of his other presents so he's not got that much to be happy with arrghh!!

What company is it made by? They might have a help line you can ring or Google.

SeenAndNot · 25/12/2022 13:16

This probably isn’t the best forum to ask - I’ve found some really good gamer forums in the past filled with computer experts. Reddit might be better start?

Monkeytapper · 25/12/2022 13:17

My son got a graphics card for his gaming PC for his birthday, we paid to have it ‘professionally’ installed by a lad who works in our IT dept at my work. The company who we bought if from could install it for about £50 but meant his PC being sent away for a week or so

we wouldn’t have been able to do it ourselves as useless at stuff like that

Try Google though as might not be same as ours

JoyBeorge · 25/12/2022 13:19

Try looking on YouTube for tutorials. You can learn practically anything on there.

Afterfire · 25/12/2022 13:19

Do you have a local community facebook page? If you post there someone might be able to help.

Aidagreenwhistle · 25/12/2022 13:21

Have you tried YouTube? There will be a tutorial but you may have to watch a few to find a decent walk through.

ZestFest · 25/12/2022 13:24

PM me and I'll get my DH to phone you? We have an almost 13 year old DS as well and if we can possibly help please let us xx

firethornuk · 25/12/2022 13:25

It might need a power cable. Newer gfx cards are very power hungry. Look for a 4 or 6 pin socket on the back/top of the card. If you’re lucky the power supply will have a spare cable. But sometimes a single component upgrade requires ‘other’ upgrades too.

Moonflower12 · 25/12/2022 13:25

@ZestFest
So lovely 😊
And this is Mumsnet at its best.

TankFlyBoss · 25/12/2022 13:26

@ZestFest that is so kind and generous of you xx

mrsbitaly · 25/12/2022 13:29

OK so this exact thing happened to us it may be the same problem maybe not. But we had the sudden no signal thing on my daughters gaming PC. We had it taken to a conputer specialist as just could not get around it. It turns out that some of the parts are made from 2012 including the motherboard. So we have to buy a new motherboard which is £110 plus the fitting for £50. Yours maybe the graphic card but if it's the right one and doesn't work it'll need to be looked at. We were told when they build these gaming pc they tend to use some old and new parts unfortunately

VioletLemon · 25/12/2022 13:30

Search the make, model and your pc type on YouTube. There's instructions for everything.

ThreeblackCats · 25/12/2022 13:31

If you can’t get the old car back in place, it suggests you are doing something wrong.
My favourite go to for easy explanations is YouTube.

Hugasauras · 25/12/2022 13:33

There's a clip on the graphics card slot at the end that you can sometimes fold/unfold to unlock in place. Check that isn't interfering if you can't get the old one in.

DH says check you're plugging the monitor cable into the actual graphics card and not the motherboard.

Monkeytapper · 25/12/2022 13:38

As another poster said, we also had to buy another motherboard as the one he currently had wasn’t compatible anymore

I'm just showing my age saying PM instead of DM! I'll send you a message now.

JoyBeorge · 25/12/2022 13:47

As said, make sure you're plugging the monitor into the graphics card and not the motherboard.

OP can you tell us what card you bought and what you have taken out.

Also can you press Windows+R, type “msinfo32” into the “Open” field, and then hit Enter.
Post a picture of the computer specs.

Last thing can your DS say what size Power supply unit it has , it will be some thing like 350watts to 1000watts.

rumship · 25/12/2022 13:50

If your husband has put it in there is usuall a small clip next to the mother board, the socket he pushed it in you need to press to release the card.

Also make sure all the power is disconnected.

My son said you might need to uninstall the old drivers or install the new drivers, alternatively the bios may need updating. Ask your son if he can put the specs of the computer

ElfShake · 25/12/2022 13:53

As PP mentioned, newer graphics cards aren’t compatible with older motherboards so it could be that.

Can you share the full name of the graphics card? Somebody could Google it for you to see if there’s anything specific you need to do with it.

rumship · 25/12/2022 13:54

This is the clip you need to press to release it.
