Rishi disappearing act

As he is our pm I thought we would have heard more from him considering all the strikes and current mess of the country. I’ve heard one statement from him saying he feels bad for the disruption over Xmas and that’s it. AIBU to think he should be trying to sort this mess out or is he quietly working away in the background?

His father in law is on holiday.

Ilovemycatalot · 24/12/2022 09:25

Not sure what that’s got to do with it.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 24/12/2022 09:26

Isn't he working on 'tough new legislation' to deal with strikes?

Ilovemycatalot · 24/12/2022 09:32

Just with the state of the country at the moment feel he really needs to be taking some direction

SavoirFlair · 24/12/2022 09:33

The father in law comment is typically fatuous Mumsnet

He is invisible because he doesn’t need to be visible. Everyone else is doing the divide and conquer work for him, on social media, on here, on talk shows and radio.

Tulipomania · 24/12/2022 09:34

I saw him on the BBC News last night. DH always rants when he sees a Tory on TV, it's not pleasant.

confusednewbie · 24/12/2022 09:36

He has hardly been a visible prime minister really. See far less about him than we did Boris or even Liz Truss.

LadyKenya · 24/12/2022 09:37

He is a weak PM, his cabinet is a mess. They are failing the Country. The strategy with this party seems to be go mia, when ever there are problems.

AppleKatie · 24/12/2022 09:39

If he was more visible there would be more credible threats to his leadership and he’d be out quicker.

it’s deliberate flying under the radar to preserve his position.

WatchoRulo · 24/12/2022 09:43

Maybe he's fucked off on holiday to one of his 12 houses again.

Proudofitbabe · 24/12/2022 09:45

I agree he's seemed very absent, considering how desperate he was to get in role in place of Johnson and Truss I'm surprised he's getting away with being so invisible.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 24/12/2022 09:46

You can bet the media would be all over it if this was a Labour govt with an invisible Labour PM. Drives me mad, the double standards.

I did see Rishi on the news the other night, looked like he was in some sort of canteen, waffling on about how his door was always open to talk to people from the public services, categorically avoiding answering about why he won't negotiate with him them on pay.

MarshaMelrose · 24/12/2022 09:47

What do you want him to do? The different ministers are overseeing the strikes according to the govt depts. They're doing the rounds of news studios pretty regularly.
If a newspaper hadn't made this a front page heading, no one would be even thinking about this.

CaponeOnTax · 24/12/2022 09:49

Apparently he is extremely hard working and driven. You kind of have to be to be that successful.

I am fine with not seeing him. I’d rather see results.

mumda · 24/12/2022 09:50

He's been signing a deal with moderna so they can have the non existent GP service continue to jab people for COVID 19 with mRNA vaccines.
Wait. Even that might have not been rishi.

MarshaBradyo · 24/12/2022 09:52

I’d rather he got it right than made noise

Look at previous people - he predicted what would happen exactly in summer

I have felt overload from politicians though over last few years and working on stuff rather than just saying it is ok by me

Which newspaper has made it front page? I've been thinking about this recently but I admit I don't watch much news/read the papers. We saw nothing but Liz Truss and we've seen almost nothing of Rishi at all. It is a bit strange as we're so used to the PM being in our faces every day

Ilovemycatalot · 24/12/2022 09:54

What do I want him to do? Give some reassurance that he’s sorting out this mess. And I’m not bringing this up because of some stupid front page news article I am genuinely concerned at the state of this country and that everyone and his wife appears to be going on strike with no resolution in sight.

OP posts:
Ilovemycatalot · 24/12/2022 09:57

It’s affecting every aspect of daily life our transport, post, healthcare etc so wouldn’t say these are minor issues.

First of all, as a poster said above, he has been out and about. There were pictures of him just last night and this morning in the mail online.
Secondly, he's not going to make the strikes disappear by going to do a visit to an electronics factory or something. He's not going to go round news studios. That's suicidal madness for a PM. So he makes a statement outside Downing Street? What can he say? He's not going to give nurse a 20% pay rise so what is he going yo say that the govt ministers haven't?

Iam4eels · 24/12/2022 10:05

As already said upthread, he's a weak PM. He's not popular with voters, he doesn't have much of a personality or charisma, he isn't relatable and is massively out of touch with what people want/need from a PM. "Sad and disappointed" about the strikes sums up his premiership really.

He's only getting away with being invisible because it's so close to Christmas and everyone is distracted by various other things. Once the next part of winter kicks in, the shitty long slog part where we haven't got Bank Holidays and presents to look forward to, he won't get away with it.

Yes this, he doesn’t seem to be like Bojo who was happier self promoting himself on TV and in social media.

Ilovemycatalot · 24/12/2022 10:10

@Iam4eels agreed he is a weak pm and seems so out of touch. Even if he doesn’t mean to everything he says comes across as smug and fake. May not be popular opinion but I actually preferred Boris!

This. People have short memories. It’s only a few short months since the country was utterly sick to death of seeing and hearing the government’s dysfunction and squabbles. If they’re going to be shit, get on and do it quietly, thanks.

And, no, there is no easy solution to the strikes that Sunak can just magic up.
