Cocaine

oystercatcher5 · 23/12/2022 08:16

We have come away for Christmas with our children and our parents.

Last night we had a meal in and sat around chatting and drinking.

Half way through the night DH went upstairs and did a line of coke.

I’m pissed off.

He thinks he’s done nothing wrong.

AIBU?

Is this a joke post?

How is it a joke?

it’s well known the general demographic of users on MN has changed drastically over the past 5-6 years. Gone are the Boden days

Not about Mumsnet, but about your accusation that the ‘lower working classes’ are those who are advocating coke use? Your prejudice is showing. And it’s not good.

Well it’s true, look at those supporting or defending coke use and then do a quick advanced search, it seems to be very accurate

No it isn’t. Do your research and then you can point your accusatory finger at the middle and even upper classes.

It definitely is, you just can’t accept facts. That’s a shame

Do you think that "lower working class" people can afford cocaine?

No, it's the 'professional' classes who use it. Which occupations are subject to random screening? Accountants or train guards? Lawyers or machinery operators?

Unfortunately many commit crime to be able to afford their habit.

Only on MN is there this weird belief it’s 40 year old bankers doing most of the sniffing under the table.

Especially considering cocaine use is highest among younger people, mainly in the 15-25 age group. They’re unlikely to be professionals.

The industries with the highest level of cocaine usage also back this up, with food service ranking first, followed by construction and utilities.

Share these facts you have then? Love, Google your friend. Use it. Then address your prejudice and be a better person

BadNomad · 23/12/2022 16:53

drug use is sadly prolific in some circles

In circles, yes. Not classes. Working class people aren't more likely to use drugs than any other class. There are groups within every class that are more prone to use drugs, though. It has nothing to do with class.

Those 15-25 year olds will include plenty of students who are the 'professionals' of the future.

3.4% of people in households with an income of £50,000 or more report using cocaine in the past year.

This compares with 2% of those in households with an income of less than £10,000 and 2.1% of those in middle income homes of £20,000 to £30,000.

And, in areas described as "cosmopolitan" by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), 5.8% of people use cocaine, compared with 2.6% in areas described as "hard-pressed living".

across the population as a whole, use of cocaine was lowest among people who have never worked (1.7%), those who have no qualifications (1.1%) and those with a household income of £30,000 to £40,000 (1.6%).

From a BBC report, figures from the British Crime Survey.

I don’t think that data says what you think it does, a household income of 50k is lower working class if it’s two people working.

And a household income of under 30k is definitely LWC, which combined with the 10-20k households shows a higher % of cocaine usage.

antelopevalley · 23/12/2022 17:05

Except the stats do not bear that out @BrookieButter Look at average household income. Loads of families with young kids only have 1 parent working part time or not at all because of childcare.

dad11122 · 23/12/2022 10:06

KetrickenSmiled, i hope you're right. Unfortunately neither of us know what strength the cocaine was or what it was mixed with or whether it was even cocaine at all. I work with doctors who tell me that someone is likely to be still be over the limit for cocaine 3 days after use, I have never used drugs before but there is no way I'd knowingly allow my children to be in a car driven by a drug user.
On your other notes I'd never drive if I felt that I was impaired by substances or tiredness, etc, as you say, that's very dangerous as well.

But that was my whole point @dad11122

Drug users, just like boozers & the chronically sleep-deprived, are not fit to be making that decision for themselves. That's why we regulate drink-driving with minimum consumption laws. The same self-assessment problem applies to coke & sleep - we just don't happen to regulate for those.

Your doctors would confirm that, but probably throw up their hands & say "but what can we DO?", & they'd be right, because we can't legislate wholesale against stupid ...

(Just read that back, to be clear that's a generic 'stupid', not a direct pop at you!)

antelopevalley · 23/12/2022 17:05

LWC is not under £30k. Plenty of households are under £20k

The stats do indeed show that, unless you think a HOUSEHOLD income of less than 30k is rolling in that professional salary life.

I have, where does it say high income professionals are most likely to take drugs?

no where

It does however clearly show those with low household incomes are most likely to consume cocaine, this is backed up by the industry stats shared earlier. Unless you think it’s the middle classes working in restaurants, construction and utilities?

DarkKarmaIlama · 23/12/2022 17:27

You’ve brought it on yourself. Accepting a man who does coke on nights out was never going to end well.

Unless you think it’s city bankers earning under 30k a year.

I am working class hen. I am aware of the financial constraints thanks.

You are severely classist on the other hand. And you need to shake your head.
