Why is this utterly obnoxious, bordering on misogynistic, horrific name dropping, self obsessive suddenly everywhere.

didn’t we call time for men like him?

i quite like him.
maybe you are too young to appreciate him.
i think he seems kind and funny. and joyful. positive.

I'm 67, and I can't bear him. He's a reactionary, sexist git and pompous with it.

I love Celebrity Gogglebox, but have to mute it every time he appears. Anything else he's on, I just turn over. There's a strong probability that any programme he's on is going to be irredeemable shite anyway. Steph's Packed Lunch and This Morning certainly are.

wilddreams · 23/12/2022 08:53

Why on earth should he be banished because he is old and white? He's an older man with knowledge and world experience.

PuppyMonkey · 23/12/2022 08:49

So that’s a no then?

I wouldn’t say it comes across as tongue in cheek

Besties with a number of smart women actually (Sheila Hancock, Carol Vordeman). Always find he has something interesting to add to specialist/historic features, though I’m old enough to remember him first time around from the world of politics. He’s one of the original politician-turned-media stars all whilst Matt Hancock was still in nappies.

He was a TV presenter before he was a politician

thelobsterquadrille · 23/12/2022 08:57

I like Gyles.

Very clever, funny and doesn't take life too seriously. He also has excellent taste in jumpers Grin

SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth · 23/12/2022 09:00

He still owns that teddy bear collection - now housed at Newby Hall

He is one of those odd men who somehow had a hugely varied life, met lots of people in all walks of life. He is incredibly clever with words, is a past Monopoly Champion and set up the UK Scrabble Championship and all sorts of other weird and wonderful things.

A true eccentric. And, like others, I too have met him and found him to be a very warm and welcoming man.

Not at all sure about the references to Gary Glitter. I have seen a clip or two and can't see what is being inferred...

Willmafrockfit · 23/12/2022 09:04

i think the gary glitter is reference to the chinese glasses he put on perhaps

So funny realising this- in my head he was a politician turned zeleb, anyway, still find him a really interesting, knowledgeable type.

millievanille · 23/12/2022 09:08

@ILoveeCakes totally ignoring your blatant racism and ageism, you believe someone should be 'banished' because you don't connect with them as much as with another? Good grief.

CulturePigeon · 23/12/2022 09:18

I like him. He's witty and urbane and I love his voice.

Willmafrockfit · 23/12/2022 09:40

can't stand alison hammond

SamanthaCaine · 23/12/2022 09:46

A friend of mine actually finds him attractive and openly admits that she fancies him. I didn't think any woman would find him attractive but guess it's true when they say there's someone for everyone!

JiminyGlick · 23/12/2022 09:55

His wife was at the ‘evening with’ I went to. She’s very attractive and elegant.

Byfleet · 23/12/2022 09:58

So, still no actual evidence of misogyny.

TenoringBehind · 23/12/2022 10:02

I like him and think he writes very well.

WouldJudasLeaveIt · 23/12/2022 10:05

I like Gyles.

Wonnle · 23/12/2022 10:25

I like him , he doesn't take himself too seriously

derxa · 23/12/2022 10:30

I last saw him on Sunday Brunch where he talked about knitting with Tom Daley and doing an evening with Dames Judi Dench, Maggie Smith etc at the London Palladium. He tried to get George Takei involved in the Dame event. He made the studio people laugh like drains. If you don't like him then change the channel.

daisychain01 · 23/12/2022 10:46

ohyouknowwhatshername · 23/12/2022 08:18

I think he's a very clever, funny man who wears silly jumpers. He doesn't offend me at all.

👍

Hbh17 · 23/12/2022 10:51

He is fabulous on Just A Minute - so quick witted.
He was also excellent interviewing Dame Judi Dench live on stage this year.

I don't watch daytime TV, so that might be your problem OP - he will be adapting his "content" to whatever the producer and director require.

Byfleet · 23/12/2022 11:03

So, the misogyny?

electricmoccasins · 23/12/2022 11:54

He reminds me of my 81-year-old uncle. Well-spoken and erudite, a certain British wit of a different era. Probably doesn’t own a pair of jeans. Yes, these gentlemen often come across as an anachronism, but we will miss them when they’re gone.

AngelontopoftheTree · 23/12/2022 11:56

Byfleet · 23/12/2022 11:03

So, the misogyny?

There isn't any, hence why OP can't point to any.

Shadope · 23/12/2022 12:04

Or what about someone who gratuitously denigrates someone on an internet forum? Someone for whom the phrase 'be kind' seems to have passed them by? You just know that person is mean-spirited and joyless. Is a drain not a radiator

@PanettoneToast has the irony of this bypassed you….

OP posts:
longwayoff · 23/12/2022 12:12

I dont seek him out but had the misfortune to see his naked feet on TV (God knows what the programme was. No idea, it was just wallpaper) the other day and they looked very uncared for. I recommend a podiatrist asap. Please keep them covered up in future Mr B.
