Why is this utterly obnoxious, bordering on misogynistic, horrific name dropping, self obsessive suddenly everywhere.

didn’t we call time for men like him?

OP posts:
TooBigForMyBoots · 23/12/2022 02:54

I love Gyles. My Christmas present this year is a signed copy of his latest book.Xmas Blush

ClaireEclair · 23/12/2022 03:34

I love him. He’s hilarious and very interesting. I would love to be his friend. He seems the kind of posh person that would get on with everyone and make people feel at ease.

MarshaMelrose · 23/12/2022 03:36

Who are you to call time on anybody? 🤔🤣

Mollymalone123 · 23/12/2022 04:31

I went to see his one man show at beginning of the year and yes he does the name dropping-along with lots of historical facts and anecdotes. The whole evening was entertaining and he spoke lovingly of his wife and how he enjoyed his life.He really interacted well on his feet with the audience.
He has a quick wit and encyclopaedic knowledge.I can see he would be annoying for some but at his age I was impressed with his energy and zest for life.

MissTrip82 · 23/12/2022 04:40

I really enjoy his podcast with Susie Dent.

You should google Giles Brandreth and Gary Glitter TVAM. Quite the eye opener.

That is interesting- casual racism? He shut Glitter down fast didn’t he.

Let me see - who would I rather spend an hour of my time with?

Gyles Brandreth has led a very interesting life and rarely says a bad word about anyone. Has an enormous zest for life and is funny, as a PP said.

Or what about someone who gratuitously denigrates someone on an internet forum? Someone for whom the phrase 'be kind' seems to have passed them by? You just know that person is mean-spirited and joyless. Is a drain not a radiator.

Not much of a contest in my book.

This is a nasty comment. Definitely made by a "drain not a radiator". Completely unnecessary.

dolor · 23/12/2022 05:39

He's an old white Tory, for some reason he keeps trying to make some noise and blind us with appalling jumpers.

Hmm so it's come to this now. He is an old white man, so let's banish him. If I said that about , say, young mixed-race women , I'd be in all sorts of trouble. Can we just stop with the nasty comments about groups of people ?

MrsDoyle351 · 23/12/2022 06:00

I saw him on an evening out years ago and wasn't expecting too much, as not a fan of Tory politics (at all) but he was pretty funny. He told a very amusing story about Thatcher back in the day. I ended up thinking he was okay!!

Mind you, I don't watch day time telly so hadn't seen him on the lunch programmes.

DuchessDandelion · 23/12/2022 06:08

I've met him, he was very kind and charming.

Not every Conservative is A Bad Person With Evil Views - and I say that as a Raving Leftie lol

See him occasionally on TV but don't seek him out so can't comment on his views on serious matters; I've never heard anything offensive to my delicate, snowflake self from him though.

As a TV personality he's a small dose sort!

A grown man who used to own the teddy bear museum in Stratford Upon Avon. Just weird.

So men aren't allowed to own teddy bear museums? You seem to have quite 'old fashioned' ideas on what men are supposed to do. Very 80s views.

Willowswood · 23/12/2022 06:10

lollipoprainbow · 23/12/2022 00:56

Finding someone irritating doesn't make you ageist or racist 🙄

No it doesn't, but highlighting their ethnicity does, when it's irrelevant to the topic.

makingarunforit · 23/12/2022 01:04

He's intelligent and a bit bonkers. I like that.

That sums it up for me too

LynetteScavo · 23/12/2022 06:24

He's not my cup of tea, but he obviously appeals to a certain audience, which is why he's still on TV. He does seem to work a lot for a 74 year old, but my MILs the same age and still chooses to work as otherwise she'd have to spend time with her DH she has nothing better to do.

Why does Cliff Richard pop up every now and again is a more interesting question IMO.

AuntieMarys · 23/12/2022 06:30

A royal family arse licker.
In the same category as Alan Titchmarsh

Surely it would be weirder for an actual child to own a museum?! 😄

I quite like him, frequently disagree with him but life would be boring if we all agreed all the time.

arghtriffid · 23/12/2022 06:46

I like him. I would watch him over all the ither presenters.

Toucan123 · 23/12/2022 06:53

Can you explain what he's supposed to have done OP? How is he misogynistic?

OddBoots · 23/12/2022 06:55

Shadope · 22/12/2022 22:48

I can see why some people would find him obnoxious, and the name dropping stories are certainly true but I have never noticed misogyny, do you have any examples? It seems like the Clarkson comment was about not giving him the publicity.

LolaSmiles · 23/12/2022 07:04

If I remember correctly he can be quite self deprecating about the name dropping. I was listening to an old episode of the podcast with Susie Dent where he was laughing at himself.

He's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but I find it a bit childish when people seem to argue that only the right sort of person/the right sort of progressive/the people with right think should have a platform to speak. It's like some parts of the left have disappeared up their own backside.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 23/12/2022 07:14

lollipoprainbow · 22/12/2022 23:00

He's regularly on this morning fawning all over holly.

Well, it is Christmas! Xmas Grin

PuppyMonkey · 23/12/2022 07:18

I’ve always thought his act was very tongue in cheek, he’s sort of playing the part of a posh name dropping twat in a silly jumper because it gets him on the telly a lot. Unless someone is about to reveal they know he’s the next Jimmy Savill or something I can’t say he upsets me much, i find him pretty harmless and quite enjoy it.

I don’t watch Steph’s Packed Lunch or This Morning though so maybe I’m missing the controversy.
