Why is this utterly obnoxious, bordering on misogynistic, horrific name dropping, self obsessive suddenly everywhere.

didn’t we call time for men like him?

OP posts:

Agreed - so few children with the wherewithal to go into museum ownership these days - another symptom of snowflake culture. I said the same about Victoria and Albert and their museum of childhood.

I'd be more interested in the V&A museum of Victorian cockrings

Clingfilm · 23/12/2022 00:19

Meh, I like him.
He's flogging a new book, that's why he's everywhere.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 23/12/2022 00:21

I used to like him but I bought his latest book and honestly, it is as you say, name dropping and just all ME ME ME.
Now I've noticed it I can't unsee it. Not a fan anymore

This better be irony/a joke/tongue-in-cheek.

Besties with a number of smart women actually (Sheila Hancock, Carol Vordeman). Always find he has something interesting to add to specialist/historic features, though I’m old enough to remember him first time around from the world of politics. He’s one of the original politician-turned-media stars all whilst Matt Hancock was still in nappies.

I just have more in common with AH, that's all.
With Gyles, it might as well be an alien saying stuff to me

AinmÁlainn · 23/12/2022 00:40

I find him infuriating. I listened to the podcast he did with Susie Dent. She is fabulous and so knowledgeable but he just talked over her with his inanities and name dropping making it unlistenable.

Do you want to banish all old white men? Insert a couple of opposites there and see how it sounds.

So that justifies you being ageist and racist?

Blossomtoes · 23/12/2022 00:52

So that justifies you being ageist and racist?

It's about wanting presenters/contributors you want to listen to.
The Beeb has gradually moved away from the Cholmondley Warner types over the years and thank god.

You listen to Gyles then coke cook with Nigella all you like, but I won't

lollipoprainbow · 23/12/2022 00:56

Finding someone irritating doesn't make you ageist or racist 🙄

grumpyparrot · 23/12/2022 00:59

> 'He’s on Steph’s packed lunch...'

THIS is where you went wrong, OP.

HairyMcLarie · 23/12/2022 01:00

I think he's hilarious. I love his shitty anecdotes.

Moaning about them being an old white man does.

makingarunforit · 23/12/2022 01:04

He's intelligent and a bit bonkers. I like that.

grumpyparrot · 23/12/2022 01:10

I still can't get over someone watching 'Steph’s packed lunch' complaining about anyone, or anything - what are they expecting?!
It's like someone referring to 'Loose women' pointing out one of their guests wasn't 'all that'. News: they're all utterly sht, given the programmes, much like anyone who'd lower themselves to go on Steph's sht lunch.

grumpyparrot · 23/12/2022 01:11

ugh, now the * in shit messed up my whole speech :P

PaperBagsAreUselessInRain · 23/12/2022 01:26

Saying you don't like him because he's irritating and you can't relate to him is fine

Saying you don't like him because he's old and white is racist and ageist

FelicityFlops · 23/12/2022 01:32

I have just finished his biography of the late Queeen. Most of it was rehashed stuff that was already known. There were very few new insights.

newfriend05 · 23/12/2022 01:47

He come and did a book day at my
Secondary school
In the 80s .. was a nice man very kind with a dry humour
Did the name dropping back then too

RedAndBlueStripedGolfingUmbrella · 23/12/2022 01:50

PurpleButterflyWings · 22/12/2022 22:52

What's he done wrong? What have I missed?

This - have I missed something?!
Isn't he the guy from the 80s who wears big jumpers?! 😕
What's he supposed to have said or done, or is it just a general moan as you personally don't like him?

tiredfriday · 23/12/2022 01:54

I like his podcast, it’s very interesting

PatricksRum · 23/12/2022 02:28

Lol at the disgust that pp stated his race.

That is the reason, top of the hierachy

It was the other way round. He was a presenter on 1980's morning television way before he became an MP
