Why is this utterly obnoxious, bordering on misogynistic, horrific name dropping, self obsessive suddenly everywhere.

didn’t we call time for men like him?

OP posts:
Shadope · 23/12/2022 12:14

I said ‘bordering on misogyny’ but maybe that was a bit harsh. Sexist probably would have been a better phrase -

What I don’t get is why he keeps giving callers dating/love advice on This Morning? Why is he considered an expert on this?

on this he’s constantly telling women where they’re going wrong, why they should please/ stay with their men and just general horrible old fashioned advice.

forgive me for the daytime tv I am on Mat leave!!!

He also has said that we shouldn’t be bothered about Clarkson’s markle comments

No he didn't, he said something like it was so vile that no-one should give it air time and fan the flames
I watched it

letsgotothebeach · 23/12/2022 12:48

I would imagine he was probably born wearing a Christmas jumper.

bellac11 · 23/12/2022 12:58

Ive leared to love Gyles Brandreth over the years, I dont take him seriously which is what he expects (that people dont and he doesnt I think).

He's really funny and seemingly positive about everything

Shadope · 23/12/2022 13:28

No he didn't, he said something like it was so vile that no-one should give it air time and fan the flames

And he was challenged on that because of course we shouldn’t ignore vile racism/ misogyny like that, we need to discuss it and stop it. Also he had lunch with Camilla the day before didn’t he 🙄

OP posts:
HomeAGnome · 23/12/2022 13:34

No one was ignoring it @Shadope he disagreed with it 100% as most people did and therefor didn't want to give JC any more air time. It was a stand against JC and for Meghan
You're getting this arse about tit
Love the eye roll though , it suits you

He's brilliant on JAM. He doesn't take himself seriously, some of his anecdotes are funny and he seems very good at drawing people out to talk about themselves. I liked the canal series - he and Sheila Hancock were a great pairing.

Yes, that’s where I know him from. He’s a very witty panellist on that show. I’ve never thought of him as a misogynist though. 🫤

Swissnotswiss · 23/12/2022 06:33

Surely it would be weirder for an actual child to own a museum?! 😄

I quite like him, frequently disagree with him but life would be boring if we all agreed all the time.

I thought this too. A grown man! Much more normal for a seven year old girl to own the museum. That would be much more normal.

I’ve liked Gyles Brandreth ever since I got his Great Big Funny Book from the Chip Club (books sold in schools) when I was 7. The comedy magnum opus of 1979.

CherryogDog · 25/12/2022 02:23

I met him a few times when I worked for his sister back in the late 70s.
Really nice man, all the family were lovely.

longwayoff · 25/12/2022 07:07

GB is a man who is, apparently, devoid of malice towards anything and everyone. There are many worse things happening than seeing him earning a living by popping up on the box once in a while, making people laugh. Save your misdirected ire for something that's actually happening. There's plenty that deserve it.

Valeriekat · 25/12/2022 09:28

Even before politics he was a columnist in Woman Magazine (or maybe Woman's Own' and he has worn the jumpers forever.

Worklessplaymore · 26/12/2022 09:00

I'm interested by this thread op. Especially that clip from Twitter with Gary Glitter which, aside from the horrific racism, certainly made me raise an eyebrow or three.

Gyles Brandreth is undoubtedly intelligent, well read and hard-working with bundles of energy . But to answer your question op, I think he is all over our screens atm because, I could be wrong, but he appears to be an unofficial spokesperson for Camilla. According to a puff piece he wrote about her for the Fail, he has known her for years;

"I first met Camilla when we were both teenagers in the 1960s. I was at a boarding school in Hampshire and visited her grandparents at their rather grand manor house, Hall Place, nearby."

They have since worked on various literary and poetry projects together.

I think it's interesting therefore that when you Google "Gyles Brandreth and Meghan Markle" a whole array of very unflattering articles by GB about MM pop up. Together with a series of articles about how kind the RF were to MM and how she apparently rejected that kindness in various ways.

Funny also, given this context, how he wouldn't exactly be pinned down about Jeremy Clarkson's recent hideous comments about MM although he did call it vile I think (I didn't see the TV programme concerned, I only read about it later).

And I heard him a couple of times (quite gratuitously imho) drop the sentence "Diana was an hysteric you know, it was quite obvious when you met her" in to two separate TV appearances a month or so back, which I thought was pretty shoddy given that she is dead, he has no medical training, and it's pretty misogynistic to imply that a woman is permanently "hysterical" in this day and age.

I think there is definitely room for a decent journalist to be doing a little delving in to how the Royal Family use "friends and supporters" to feed stories in to the press to "influence" the public's view of a person or situation and to investigate who those people really are.

JustDanceAddict · 26/12/2022 09:35

I loved him in the 80s. He wrote a couple of ‘quiz’ type books that I enjoyed back in the day. Now I find him annoying - he was on something the other day and was really irritating/ can’t remember what programme but he was talking shite!

Worklessplaymore · 26/12/2022 13:28

This is admittedly a rather frivolous comment, but the older I get, the less I trust these "jolly hockey stick", "life's a game and full of larks" type of men. Particularly the ones who are clever or who are described as "charming". Boris Johnson is another. I always wonder what they are hiding... .

LlynTegid · 26/12/2022 13:31

For all his failings and agreeing he is not someone for dating advice (you why you watch the queue jumpers Holly and Phil is beyond me), there is one thing I will always applaud him for. In his short period as an MP, he introduced and had passed the law allowing non-religious places to be wedding venues.

Klippetyklip · 26/12/2022 13:34

I don’t agree with everything he says, but I’d love to have a boozy lunch with him. He’d be fabulous company I imagine.

AllTheAll · 26/12/2022 13:34

I had to open this thread just for the name.

That's quite the name to work your mouth around! And it only gets better:

Besties with a number of smart women actually (Sheila Hancock, Carol Vordeman). Always find he has something interesting to add to specialist/historic features, though I’m old enough to remember him first time around from the world of politics. He’s one of the original politician-turned-media stars all whilst Matt Hancock was still in nappies.

Or, media star turned politician returned to media star, in his case!

Worklessplaymore · 26/12/2022 14:58

Yes, it certainly hasn’t harmed his profile being aligned to the royal family.

Shadope · 27/12/2022 23:13

nah he’d be one of those middle aged white men that talk at you and you might as well not be there.

@HomeAGnome look at @Worklessplaymore longrr
post up screen. He insidiously slams Megan any time he can but all in a ‘super jolly way’ eh!

I'd love to come to your boozy lunch with him please. I saw him on stage this year and he is really quite self deprecating and doesn't come across as an egoist at all. He has lots of funny stories and no scandal attached to him. His show was quite nostalgic and perfectly pitched to be funny but also bring a tear to your eye.
Boozy lunch would be fabulous 👌

Indeed! I like him but I did find his desperate output after the Queen died a bit much - it was like he knew his connection with them both now had diminishing returns.

Weirdwonders · 28/12/2022 09:21

He’s interesting and erudite. He’s been on TV for years. His comments about Clarkson seem very sensible once they’d been clarified by another poster. His podcast about language with Suzie Dent is huge. I don’t really know what your problem is, it isn’t very well articulated and seems to be to do with not wanting him on TV because he’s a posh old man. There aren’t actually that many of his type left on TV now they’ve all been purged so try and be a bit more tolerant eh?

That's not true, he's very interested in others and doesn't talk at them at all. If your problem is that he's a middle aged white man, well there's not much that he can do about that.
