AIBU to think that there needs to be a dog licence or at least SOMETHING put in place to try and prevent deaths by these dogs?
I was not at all surprised to read the breed..
"The dog, a large black XL bully cross cane corso breed, was seized by officers and has been destroyed."

“then some other more local paper articles the comments made it clear they were exercising teams of dogs in a gated woodland area they had permission to use, to run the dogs behind scooters/rigs.”

Yeah, there seems to be some land frequently used by a few people for that, it’s apparently locked and people who use it have keys.

But, the attack was reported as happening in the public car park, not in that land.

DysonSpheres · 27/12/2022 18:47

Thank you @WiddlinDiddlin I stand corrected. A terrible tragedy then. Still very sad.

Seems plausible to me that they would have to have parked somewhere like a public car park (deserted at 11pm) to get the dogs onto that locked land... start unloading the dogs, hyper aroused (anticipating the run) and possibly under exercised dog turns on baby just as they get it out the vehicle.

Oh I wasn’t disputing the plausibility of any of it, just that they weren’t in a secure piece of land when it happened.

But there were definitely members of the public present shortly after, if not at the time (I don’t know if there were or weren’t at the time) because they were giving interviews to the press about what they had seen afterwards. 😐

The rest was just me wondering if there was something more to as it’s very unusual to arrest the parents at that point. Don’t know what though, but the wording me wonder if the parents weren’t actually with the baby at the time, or if it was because the dog was loose for a long time.... or something like that.

OllytheCollie · 27/12/2022 21:12

The other reason for arresting at the time is if you want to keep the two suspects separate before interview so they don't have time to prepare their stories. Given one has pleaded guilty and the other is pleading not guilty there's got to be a chance the blame game had already started when the police arrived and they realized they needed to arrest both on suspicion. I seem to remember another v sad case last year where the family left a dog with a bite history in the house with a newborn. Wife stood by her husband (it was his dog, their joibt child but dog had been a gift to his children in a previous relationship and had bitten them) and her evidence conflicted with forensic evidence about where baby was at time the injury occurred. In that case fortunately both parents were found guilty but it's a sad fact of child protection cases that sometimes convictions aren't secured because parents lie to protect each other.

I suspect they've agreed that one of them will take the fall, so that the other can care for the huskies and avoid them all being put down whilst they're serving time inside.

If it were me, I'd never want to see another dog as long as I lived.

No! Do really think so? That would be their priority? The dogs? Surely, surely, you wouldn't want to be near any of them? PTSD?!

They'd be awful if so, goodness! How much is a child worth?

Stomacharmeleon · 27/12/2022 22:46

Horrifyingly I think your right @ThisGirlNever

@LolaButt What is it about these types of dogs who seem to turn on their own owners/families? Is it the genetic disposition of the dog, lack of socialisation or both?

Various factors IMO.

Dogs are pack animals, in nature they have a hierachy so humans need to replicate that by making sure the dog knows that you are the pack leader.

The Cane Corso is not banned in UK but it is unsuitable for novice dog owners. If crossed with a BullyXL it can weigh up to 200 lbs.

It is a working dog so it needs to be worked. That means owners taking time out to devise games/training for these dogs to stop them getting bored..
Unfortunately, usually, the type of owners these dogs attract aren't really inclined to engage these activities.

Pack theory has been debunked for many years, even by Mech who originally wrote the article.

Exactly. Expecting dogs to be pack animals like wolves, after 30,000 years of divergent evolution to be dependent on humans, isn't all that different to expecting humans to behave like chimps (OK, that may be true in an uncomfortable number of cases, but you get what I mean).

There is no dominance hierarchy when groups of dogs are found in the wild, and they're highly cooperative and rarely aggressive, but they will gravitate towards human settlements. Basically, they recreate the harmonious version of human social structure when left to their own devices.

Despite a lot of the hate for dogs I can see here, I always wonder if we could learn a lot from them....

Unfortunately some people treat their dogs like their children.
