It seems that a lot of the working age population now are snowflakes or incompetent or just don't care enough to do a good job. It's rare to manage people who actually work reliably the hours they are paid to.
I just wonder what would happen to the economy in general if
A) employees turned up and worked hard for the hours they were paid
B) employees only took sick leave when they were really unwell
C) employees did not regard the usual ups and downs of life as 'mental health' but reserved that for people with actual mental illness like clinical depression, schizophrenia etc
D) employees just genuinely cared about doing a good job and tried hard

Also would the NHS thrive if we weren't all so dependent on referrals for minor issues and just took a bit of ownership and responsibility for staying well.

If people stopped blaming social workers for child abuse and looked at the parents.

Sorry a bit of a rant but I'm disillusioned

WELL, everyone did all the things you listed for years and years and it produced the society we have now, so doesn’t seem that great if you ask me.

This is actually a really good point

I still find that people mostly work well. Not just the people I work with, but the ones I see in daily life - nurses, carers, Tube staff, shop staff, delivery staff.

I'm interested to know where OP is finding these lazy folk.

MooseBreath · 18/12/2022 22:44

I worked for a company where I was treated like shit. I did my work well. I worked my hours. I didn't take excessive sick days.

Guess what?

I was made "redundant" when I got pregnant. My job was replaced with another almost identical job.

I wonder how things would be if employers weren't greedy, unfeeling c*nts.

HotChoxs · 18/12/2022 22:44

Pixiedust1234 · 18/12/2022 22:42

I didn't offer any suggestions because nobody is paying me a consultancy fee 😂

I am so pleased you are no longer a manager/employer as your attitude stinks as much as your ineptitude.

Not what my employees thought, just someone on a forum who's living in a bubble

EileenAdler · 18/12/2022 22:44

OP, you could do all you say, and yet we all know, certainly if you work in the private sector, that your employer would make you redundant without a second thought. The same goes for working outside your hours and unpaid overtime. This is expected and seen as "commitment" however the company itself wouldn't waste a minute of its time unless it could bill the client/customer at the full commercial rate.

Loyalty works both ways.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 18/12/2022 22:40

I'd start by buying them decent coats.
The rest is available for a consultation fee.

Strange you had plenty of ideas in other replies

An appropriate wage for the market.

Which your company can't afford in an inflated tight labour market

Next suggestion genius

Has it occurred to you to quit seeing as you're expecting me to do your job for you? It's obviously not an appropriate salary to retain them if they'll fuck off when asked to do their job, is it "genius"? I'd hate to be managed by you considering how rude, disrespectful and demanding you are when you're not even paying me. If your company can't afford it then that's on the company, not the low level staff.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 18/12/2022 22:45

Most people work, they need the money, they have to.
If they leave your company it is because they feel somewhere else is probably better. Why do they feel this?

Luckydip1 · 18/12/2022 22:46

A small number of people have careers or is an entrepreneur and everyone else has a job.

RewildingAmbridge · 18/12/2022 22:46

I work in the public sector, my team go above and beyond to protect the public, I can't think of one who hasn't worked beyond contracted hours in the last month for no extra pay. They are resilient, hard working and bloody under appreciated by most who don't have a clue what they even do. The things they deal with and witness on a daily basis are traumatic, things that would likely keep you up at night, yet they keep going. The only member of staff off sick has just had brain surgery, I do have one due off in January for a triple heart bypass , is that ill enough for you?

My last reply as I now see you.

I could take your post and aim it straight back at you. You are also on this forum, in your own little bubble 😉

saffy56 · 18/12/2022 22:47

I agree with you OP. I am sure people today aren't as resilient, and able to work through minor illnesses, than 30 years ago. I never heard of mental health days either until my new place of work and most people take one a week!!!

Morielle · 18/12/2022 22:48

OP may I ask your opinion on Boris Johnson - just curious

It's not my job though. I haven't had to work for a long time.

Just sounds like you're clueless. Clearly can't work out why everything's taking twice as long and costing twice as much. Probably voted leave too.

Shutthegatepeter · 18/12/2022 22:49

You sound like an employer who pays minimum wage and expects your staff to turn up at 8:45am despite you not actually paying them until 9am. The majority of your staff will rely on tax credits to get by because your wages are so pitiful. Pay peanuts, get monkeys.

Anyone who uses the word "snowflakes" automatically has nothing to say that is worth listening to.

Agree

RunnerBum · 18/12/2022 22:50

If I’m so clueless then why do you keep asking for my input because you’re incapable of finding a solution. Thanks for clarifying you don’t work, haven’t worked in a long time and are, therefore, completely incapable of having an informed opinion on this topic.

Obviously not since I understand how the labour market works whereas you're asking me to explain what's different in 2022 which is obvious to just about anyone.

I'm not asking for your input. I'm asking for you to read an article on why the Country is in a mess.

Usernamen · 18/12/2022 22:52

I tend to agree, OP. Not sure what we can do about it. Maybe the recession will help? A scarcity of jobs should (in theory) make people buck up their ideas.

The truth is, despite Brexit and the pandemic, we’re living in very prosperous times, historically speaking. So we can afford to subsidise mediocrity and pander to people’s whims.

Sack the workshy. Increase the pay of the remaining productive staff and then pay overtime to get the job done.

ImNotDancing · 18/12/2022 22:54

Ugh, those pesky peasant employees caring about their boundaries and wellbeing really gets on my tits. Why won’t they learn their place at the bottom of the pile and be grateful for crumbs we send them 🙄🙄🙄

You repeatedly asked for my input.

You also never asked me to read any article. Are you confused?

Overtime for good table waiting staff eh. Perhaps they can continue when the restaurant is closed.

Next suggestion.

I'm really not a troll.
I'm just saying that things are grinding to a halt

I agree that the country is grinding to a halt, but I disagree with your analysis of why it's happening. It's far more about the running down of public services, the squeeze on pay for ordinary workers while director renumerations boom (we have one of the highest income equality levels in the OECD) and many others reasons going back 40 years or more. You can only piss on people so long before they stop bothering.

Had you read an article on why the Country is in a mess I wouldn't have needed to show you how useless your suggestions are.
