To find adults that don’t swear …

notcompletingthetodolist · 17/12/2022 21:59

Kind of odd?

I’m not sayinh you have to swear every sentence because that’s cringe, I’m just saying it’s ok to say “I’ve had a shit day today” or “fuck sake” if you’re annoyed.

I had dinner today with a friend and her friend and they spoke about a “fuck it list” but only said “f it list” … like we’re all adults who shouldn’t be offended by moderate swearing.

(And yes I understand not swearing in front of children, at work or elderly relatives)

OP posts:

I swear a lot. Everyone at my work swears and it's just rubbed off onto me.

I don't swear in front of children though and am very careful when my DSS is here.

TheMoth · 18/12/2022 09:38

I love a good swear, but like pp, I've been teaching a long time, so can turn it on and off at will. I also find my swearing levels creep up at certain points.

Kids definitely have fewer inhibitions about swearing in front of teachers anymore. And swearing at us. It's always an interesting experience phoning for that one though:"good afternoon Ms x, just phoning to let you know that Emily is on detention with me tomorrow, as she called me a stupid fat cunt, when I asked her to take her coat off today. "

But what is the difference between boasting and answering a question ?

I've never sworn and I'm 50 - boasting

I've never sworn and I'm 50 - answering an op's question

I do wonder if some people have either chips on their shoulders or are projecting some issues

OP asked if she was BU for finding people who didn’t swear odd. She didn’t ask people to share their personal proclivities for profanity. So, no, you weren’t answering her question.

CrunchyCarrot · 18/12/2022 09:41

I didn't start swearing till I was in my 30s (abusive marriage probably triggered it!). I wish I didn't swear, I should try harder not to! Often people will swear around me and then say 'pardon my French!' or 'sorry for swearing!' and I wonder if I look like someone one shouldn't swear around.

I'm not 50, the example was not about me

Willmafrockfit · 18/12/2022 09:44

i told a colleague to piss off the other day
i was at the end of my tether and wished i hadnt

BellePeppa · 18/12/2022 09:56

I did have a huge ranty swearing fit a few days ago using every swear world multiple times loudly but the only one in ear shot was the dog. It was because I couldn’t get the lights on the Christmas tree without tangling them up again in the process. Took me three or four attempts and a lot of stomping about like a toddler (😳).

Sickofcoughing · 18/12/2022 09:59

I'm a teacher so I had to get out of the habit of swearing ever in work. It's not that easy so now I never swear to ensure I don't slip into old habits.

I don't like swearing at all now so not sure why you think its anymore grating to listen to people not swear than I do to have to listen to people swear. It sounds very aggressive to me.

Purplebunnie · 18/12/2022 10:01

Ackity · 17/12/2022 22:08

I wish I didn’t swear. I swear too much and I think it is incredibly common and sounds so vulgar when I hear it in other women. So why can’t I stop?!

This is me and I wish I could stop as well.

HollyHobbie12 · 18/12/2022 10:06

People used to joke about me never swearing which I thought was kind of pathetic. Doesn't make you look tough or cool as much as people think it does.
I do swear but not in front of others I don't know too well and only when I am sad or angry.

That’s a very narrow view. It may have been a slightly indirect response, but the implication was clear: YABU. It also seemed to me a useful and relevant contribution to the debate.

swearing Always seems aggressive to me
very off that you find people who don’t swear odd
those are my opinions

JaninaDuszejko · 18/12/2022 10:12

I am not keen on the twee swearing (unless children about) and at work if someone does it I say 'I think you'll find you meant to say 'fuck' there' 😂.

Code switching is tremendously important here, swearing is more powerful if you can control it, and the fact that some people can't code switch is the basis of the accusations of swearers being uneducated. Of course the evidence is that those who know the most swear words are also those who know the most words. Not that surprising a finding really.

There's also a massive different between saying 'oh fuck, that's bit embarassing. Shit. How the hell are we going to deal with this?' (completely unremarkable sentence at work) and say 'You bloody idiot, why did you do that? Can't you do anything properly?' (which would be completely unacceptable to say at work although there are fewer swear words).

That points to a cultural change as well, it's now generally fine to swear but not to swear at someone else. And the most offensive words have changed over time. I'll happily say fuck or cunt but would never use racially offensive language or disablist language. Those are the real swear words these days and Ithink we'd all agree no decent person would use that kind of offensive language.

miltonj · 18/12/2022 10:19

I say f a lot. Not cos I'm not into swearing, just cos it's quicker 😂 and also because I've gotten used to saying it around the kids so that carries on when I'm in adult company I guess.

Alrighty. Then the example given wouldn’t be answering her question.

Did you read what I was responding to?

Why do you ask? Did you read the actual post by the person who has never sworn and is fifty.

Thepeopleversuswork · 18/12/2022 10:48

I am pretty comfortable with swearing: I had a sweary upbringing and I can’t relate to the idea that it’s a sign of poor education or parental guidance. (And the people who say sugar and fudge are unbearably twee). I think swearing is a really helpful pressure valve for dealing with stress or frustration.

But I do flinch when people swear with total disregard for others in public spaces (on the bus, in a waiting room and particularly around children). It’s rude and entitled to assume that everyone is as comfortable with it as you are.

Isitsixoclockalready · 18/12/2022 10:50

I swear way too much at times. If people can avoid it, more power to them.

LlynTegid · 18/12/2022 10:52

A minority yes, but not odd.

Someone noticed about three years ago that I had never been heard swearing at work, so now I have to keep that up.

zingally · 18/12/2022 11:12

I've hand-on-heart never ever heard my mum swear. She would say its vulgar and a sign of low intelligence, and tbh I don't think I've ever sworn in front of her either.
Everyone's different!

Why do I ask if you read what I was responding to before telling me I was taking a ‘narrow view’? Seriously? That’s not immediately apparent to you? You often wade into conversations without bothering to gauge what’s being discussed, then? Good for you. 😂

Burgoo · 18/12/2022 11:23

I wish I didn't swear like it do. Most sentences end in the F word.

No. Because I had read it so I don’t understand why you thought I hadn’t. What are you getting at?

Yarrawonga · 18/12/2022 11:29

I've hand-on-heart never ever heard my mum swear.

I've never heard mine swear either. My father hardly ever, and never stronger than "bloody". We just aren't a sweary family.
