People 'slamming' Sainsburies for having to scan till receipt to leave self service

What's the issue?
Been to loads of supermarkets abroad and this is standard practice, Not complicated.

I guess it's to stop theft. i presume you can exit elsewhere if you haven't actually brought anything but it is just a way of ensuring people don't try and sneak through without paying for stuff.

I suppose if it’s just been brought in there are lots of people who’ve shoved their receipt in the bag, on the floor, in their pocket or left it sticking out the till. Those people are then passed off when their prevented leaving the shop.

BelleMarionette · 17/12/2022 10:29

Who is 'slamming them'? I haven't seen any complaints. Clearly thefts are an issue otherwise they wouldn't do this. It's standard in other UK shops too, eg ikea

It won't stop theft though!

Bit pointless

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/12/2022 10:32

I find it a pain in the arse at IKEA, and also an ineffective way of preventing theft.

What happens if you don't buy anything?

How does it actually prevent theft? I mean what's it meant to physically do?

bloodywhitecat · 17/12/2022 10:34

How does it prevent theft?

HappyHolidai · 17/12/2022 10:35

If it's a quick shop at self-checkout I don't get a receipt as it's a waste of paper. Not sure how that works with this!

Don't use self service exit?

I guess it's just a way to ensure that people can't sneak out through self service exits carrying goods.

It won't stop it but it's another barrier

I’d be SO anxious if I was prevented from leaving a shop.

How do they do it? Do they keep the doors locked?

I know theft is a large problem but taking hostages isn’t the answer.

00100001 · 17/12/2022 10:36

Fairly standard in Netherlands

It's the self service section
Not the whole shop

It's the fact they've taken away people's jobs.... And passed the responsibility for stopping theft to the shopper in an annoying way. So they have tried to save money in this way, without accepting the increased risk of shoplifting basically

upfucked · 17/12/2022 10:37

I wish they just has more tills with people open or at least enough people at self check out to deal with issues. This is a big reason why I shop online because paying is always way more complicated and time consuming that needed.

Wow I’ve never seen this in a shop before. It wouldn’t particularly bother me though, once I knew it was a thing I would just make sure I kept my receipt to hand.

You just scan the receipt on your bar ide and it opens a little gate out of the till area.

It's not hard, it not complicated, it's nothing to be anxious about. It's just the same as tapping a card for access to underground etc.

Bagzzz · 17/12/2022 10:37

Haven’t come across this in my local Sainsbury’s. Does it automatically generate a receipt as I get asked if I want one or not?

Whose jobs have been 'taken away'?

Shesasuperfreak · 17/12/2022 10:39

Being standard practice in a foreign country doesn't mean it is successful here.

FleasNavidad · 17/12/2022 10:39

Some people have too much time on their hands. It's a receipt not brain surgery.

onemouseplace · 17/12/2022 10:40

I haven't seen this yet in either Ikea or Sainsburys.

I'd have been mighty pissed off if they wouldn't let me out of the till area in Ikea last week - I'd got as far as the warehouse bit and was bursting for a wee so nipped out of the till exit to the loos there while DH started loading up the flat bed trolley and then came back through.

Withnoshoes · 17/12/2022 10:41

Yup we did this in Copenhagen this year. Didn’t really think much of it. Just at self checkout then had small electronic gates that opened after you scanned receipt.

Hardly being kept hostage 🙄
