People 'slamming' Sainsburies for having to scan till receipt to leave self service

What's the issue?
Been to loads of supermarkets abroad and this is standard practice, Not complicated.

I guess it's to stop theft. i presume you can exit elsewhere if you haven't actually brought anything but it is just a way of ensuring people don't try and sneak through without paying for stuff.

Haven't read the full thread but I work in a small supermarket and we constantly have people put their stuff through the self service till, bag it up and then walk off without paying. We can't catch all of them. Often it's because people will scan their credit card and instantly walk off without making sure the payment has actually gone through (you'd be surprised how often it doesn't)

This sounds like a simple solution to a pretty big problem for us.

Lovageandrose · 17/12/2022 12:58

I don’t use self service. I’m there to shop not put a shift in at the tills.

Unifolorn · 17/12/2022 12:59

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 17/12/2022 10:36

I’d be SO anxious if I was prevented from leaving a shop.

How do they do it? Do they keep the doors locked?

I know theft is a large problem but taking hostages isn’t the answer.

Cripes that's a bit dramatic. No one will hold anyone hostage, it's meant just as another deterant. Don't steal and you won't have to worry.

Who are all these people going in to supermarkets and buying nothing? They are not really places for an idle browse.

If you're going for something specific and they don't have it you probably won't buy anything.

Hayliebells · 17/12/2022 13:04

I do agree that this is a problem of the supermarket's own making. If self service didn't exist, there wouldn't be as much opportunity for theft. However, when I've been abroad and had to scan a receipt to leave, it's been the only exist out of the shop. Doesn't matter if you use self service or not (which we didn't), if you don't have a receipt, you can't leave. I guess if you don't, you'd have to show the security staff the inside of your bag etc, to prove you haven't tried to nick anything. I suspect it won't be long before we see that over here too.

Nirvanarama · 17/12/2022 13:04

Because we only have one pair of eyes each 🙄like I said, with all the will in the world we can't catch all of them, it literally happens daily

SplunkPostGres · 17/12/2022 13:06

Don’t know if anyone has already mentioned this but presumably will be linked to nectar card in future, reducing unnecessary receipt printing?

There’s really not much to it

Some of these posts make me wonder how arduous people find shopping

I use scan and go and much prefer it to standing at conveyor waiting for someone to scan it. It’s all scanned and in a bag all I have to do is pay, take receipt and go.

If people are absentmindedly not paying due to card not going through, as in that post, it’s a good solution.

Nirvanarama · 17/12/2022 13:06

I do also agree self service tills are shit and cost people jobs

Lorrymum · 17/12/2022 13:11

I was in my local Sainsburys last Sunday morning. I saw a young man literally stuff a bag with trays of steak. I quickly alerted a member of staff who shrugged and said it happened all the time. We both watched as he legged it out into the street.

And this will stop that how exactly?

EmotionalBruises · 17/12/2022 13:13

I haven't seen this in Sainsbury's, but they had this in a Primark I was in a while ago. I don't think I even used their self-service tills, but I had to scan my receipt as it was the only way to get out of the till area.

Prescottdanni123 · 17/12/2022 13:15

Is this being implemented nationwide? Because I haven't heard anything about it and I've had no problems leaving the shop without scanning my receipt

There definitely needs to be a crackdown on shoplifting. Things are hard for everyone at the moment but that is no excuse for stealing. Shops need to have a national database and everyone convicted of shoplifting should be banned from all supermarkets.

TheKitchenWitch · 17/12/2022 13:20

Standard in Gemany too.
And if you pay with store card/app then you can get the code to open the barrier on your phone, so no paper print out needed.
It's an absolute non-issue, but just might take time to get used to if it's new in Sainsbury's. Much like bringing your own bags when shopping.

cakeorwine · 17/12/2022 13:20

That's great for you. Not everyone feels the same way. If my local shop started doing this and passing the effort on to the customer, I'd just go to another shop instead. Then again they probably wouldn't do it in a place wheres there's actual choice about where to shop

What effort is being passed on?

You buy your goods. A receipt is provided, You scan the receipt

Not many queues when we used them in Europe.

Remarkably easy to use.

I hope it comes to our store soon. The number of people who tap and walk away without checking if the payment has gone through is unreal. I agree it won’t stop a determined shoplifter but if it stops the unintentional ones I’m all for it.

Effort seems overstating it, but yes I prefer convenience ie fast and easy

Ittybittytittycomittee · 17/12/2022 13:25

If you haven't stolen anything then you have nothing to be pissed off about really!

TheKitchenWitch · 17/12/2022 13:26

There's absolutely no effort involved at all, unless you count holding a piece of paper/your phone up to a scanner "effort".

It’s not passing effort to the customer at all. It’s actually much easier for the customer. I converted to self scanning during lockdown. As Marsha explains above, it cuts out masses of faff having to put it all on the conveyor, bag it up again and put back in trolley and is more quick and convenient for the customer.
