What's the issue?
Been to loads of supermarkets abroad and this is standard practice, Not complicated.

I guess it's to stop theft. i presume you can exit elsewhere if you haven't actually brought anything but it is just a way of ensuring people don't try and sneak through without paying for stuff.

I suppose it's not a great salary, but like I say, more than my friend gets. I think it's disgraceful that she earns so little.

I've noticed that Waitrose tills have recently stopped making receipts optional, so maybe this is coming there.

They enhanced till security a couple of months ago, and it's been chaos ever since. Last Friday was the worst example of this, at one point 5 out of 6 tills were waiting for supervisor assistance. Actually, security that was so much worse that I wonder if securtiy has been further enhanced, with scales programmed to be more sensitive.

@Strugglingtodomybest earning enough to buy nice trainers and maybe run a shit car at eighteen is very different to earning enough as an adult to support rent, study, family, mortgage.
Or are you saying his supermarket wage exceeds the national minimum wage enough so he keeps comfortably abreast of inflation.

Yes it's shocking that childcare and education are ridiculously underpaid, but your friend's lack doesn't make a supermarket and respectable.

Yes I agree, that was meant to be my point - perhaps not well explained!

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 19/12/2022 23:21

Not sure what that is supposed to mean

That doesn't sound very "Netherlands".

This has just started in my local Sainsburys so I won't be shopping there anymore (I don't know if it's a thing at the larger stores, but DH does the main shop at our larger branch).

However, I have also noticed that Waitrose has stopped making receipts optional as well so maybe it is also coming there.

I guess if they all do it, we're stuck with it.

it's really cheeky when they don't have enough staff on the checkouts though.

Most supermarkets we want to in Copenhagen were like this

Itick8outof10boxes · 08/09/2023 19:09

What is wrong with people to make such a big issue out of this scanning your receipt ? FFS, get a life.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 09/09/2023 14:44

The barrier in ‘my’ Sainsbury’s opens when you push it anyway, and and busy times you can just follow someone through. So as a bit of theatre it’s annoying, but practically it makes no difference at all

Well, you're just rude. I trust you don't speak to retail staff like that.

What is wrong with it is that the supermarkets cut their staff, introduce self-service, think "oh no shop lifting has increased" but rather than introduce intelligence-led measures, introduce policies that annoy customers, cause grief for staff and don't reduce shoplifting. I can buy one thing, have a receipt, scan it, and have a further five items in my bag that I haven't paid for. And it's a waste of paper. My local store now has a big bin for everyone to put their receipts in. Multiply that around the country.

Sainsburys says it's a trial - it won't be, because they've spent the money on it now.

I've been to Copenhagen several times including since covid and haven't encountered any supermarkets like this.

I have a disability that means I can only use one hand. So if I'm carrying my shopping I can't then scan my receipt. Hopefully that answers your question about what's "wrong" with me.

Maryamlouise · 09/09/2023 22:06

I don't like it, feels like waste of paper and I don't shop there often so always get caught out by not having the receipt

Itick8outof10boxes · 10/09/2023 14:28

Duck I realise that some people find these things difficult. It's the one's who whinge and moan about everything no matter how small. They hate anything different, tut and moan but aren't prepared to speak up. That grinds my gears big time.
