People 'slamming' Sainsburies for having to scan till receipt to leave self service

What's the issue?
Been to loads of supermarkets abroad and this is standard practice, Not complicated.

I guess it's to stop theft. i presume you can exit elsewhere if you haven't actually brought anything but it is just a way of ensuring people don't try and sneak through without paying for stuff.

Whose jobs have been 'taken away'?

The people who worked on the checkouts that have been replaced by self-serve.

Yes we came across this in the Netherlands for the first time. Not a problem. Although quite a few self service tills do have the option to say no to a receipt so how would that work?

YouScumbagYouMaggotHeresKevinTheCarrot · 17/12/2022 10:41

Hmm so forcing people to take receipts when they might not need one. Not eco.
Adding in extra faff. People tend to use self service to save time.
It's all very well saying xyz is simple but the reality of those tills is that they malfunction, are not user friendly and some people will find them confusing.
Still if it means they have to hire more staff, yay.

The people that used to work on the checkouts where self service tills are nowadays. I prefer using self service a lot, but it's clearly preferred by shops to save them money on staffing

crisscrosscringle · 17/12/2022 10:43

The jobs are still there; they've just changed. Lots more shelf pickers here for Deliveroo and online shopping.

Being standard practice in a foreign country doesn't mean it is successful here.

Well if it saves stores money from less stolen goods in other countries of course they will implement it here. It really wasn’t a huge issue when I experienced it abroad. Was just the self serve section. Wasn’t held hostage in store, people were freely coming and going elsewhere.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/12/2022 10:45

This was common when we were living in Denmark

It's mildly amusing to see people complaining about this when you've seen it in practice in Europe for ages.

People will always have a moan when something they haven’t seen before comes in. Either they will get used to it or it won’t work out here and will go back to how it was before.

Georgeskitchen · 17/12/2022 10:55

People wetting their knickers over this without reading properly. You are free to wander round the store and buy nothing if you wish. However, should you buy something and go through the self scan, you need to scan yoir receipt to open a barrier. This hasn't been implemented in my local branch yet, probably being trialled in the stores that have the highest theft risk.
But as mentioned upthread, since they decided to have virtually no staff nowadays, they are an easy target for thieves!!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/12/2022 10:57

Done it loads on foreign supermarkets.

Which does not make it less of a pain in the arse, or an effective way of preventing theft.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 17/12/2022 10:58

Not that that could have been foreseen by all those highly paid executives who decided to replace staff with machines, of course.

Plexie · 17/12/2022 10:58

It was installed in my local Sainsbury's a few weeks ago without warning or explanation. One week it was "Do you want a receipt?" and the following week the receipt was automatic and you found the exit barred with gates and a sign saying you need to scan your receipt.

I don't mind it but it would have been helpful if they'd prewarned customers before or at the self-service machines. It's now common in a lot of supermarkets to be given the option of not receiving a receipt, so to suddenly switch back to auto receipts that are vital to be able to exit, should be communicated to customers in advance.

As for "it's common in foreign supermarkets", you do realise that most people in the UK don't have jetsetting lifestyles that include regular supermarket shopping in foreign countries? And, newsflash!, not everyone shops at IKEA so won't be familiar with their system either.

It doesn't matter if it's common elsewhere, it's not common in British supermarkets (is Sainsbury's the first?) and it's new for most people. Sainsbury's should have done a better job communicating it.

People really do think there are job losses!!! If only they knew how retail works!

user1498572889 · 17/12/2022 11:00

They are not doing it in my sainsburys. I was in there this morning.

Thesearmsofmine · 17/12/2022 11:01

It’s not in my nearest IKEA either.

SmartWatch · 17/12/2022 11:01

I saw someone at IKEA the other day not scan a small item, scan some other stuff, put everything in the bag and then scan receipt to leave. A human stopped them and reminded them they hadn't scanned one item and made them go back and do it. So what's the point?

TheYummyPatler · 17/12/2022 11:01

My local Sainsbury’s offers a no receipt option at the self service till.

Tbh, I don’t see what scanning the receipt to exit the self service area proves or how it helps prevent theft. There are plenty of ways to ‘sneak through’ a supermarket.

cakeorwine · 17/12/2022 11:02

The point is that it's common in Europe. I don't know if there were complaints at the start but they are there. It's not a case of being familiar - just a case that it happens elsewhere and they just get on with it.

So what will happen if I actually didn’t buy anything and walked through the self service area as that is always not busy where I live and the manned checkout area is rammed with trolleys and people queuing?
The other day I quickly popped into Sainsburys as I was looking if they have a particular item, they didn’t so I walked out though the self service as did not buy anything..
no one stopped me as I was empty handed with tiny shoulder bag…

OMG12 · 17/12/2022 11:04

As long as they automatically give you a receipt (not v environment lay friendly though) as I just press buttons without thinking and likely to press no receipt then get stuck

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/12/2022 11:06

It's pretty standard in French supermarkets now, it's not hard to work out.

More annoying is in France you have to remember to get a little bar code sticker for any loose fruit or veg as their self service check outs often do not weigh loose items.

We are ge erally vatching up with a lot of Europe on automation. They have implemented it earlier as they are higher wage economies. Until recently we have had a lot of cheap, widely available labour so it has not made sense for companies to invest as much in to automation. Now places are investing more. Uniqlo is the first clothes shop I have seen with self checkouts in London.

ITSU now has many branches that are pretty much fully automated.

westthroughthewhitleywood · 17/12/2022 11:06

I don't really understand how it prevents theft, maybe I'm being dim but if you're stealing things by not scanning them and hiding them in your shopping, how is scanning the receipt going to make a difference? As it's only certain items that set alarms off at the exit anyway.

EnyoClytemnestra · 17/12/2022 11:07

Has been introduced in France since I was last there. Just at self-service bit
Hardly an effort to obtain a receipt (from the machine or your phone) and wave it at the scanner
Didn't see anyone taken hostage!

Phrenologistsfinger · 17/12/2022 11:10

All us infertile women avoiding touching receipts because of the phthalates on thermal paper (harmful to fertility - after 12 losses you’ll do anything!) will I guess be using the staffed tills.
