People 'slamming' Sainsburies for having to scan till receipt to leave self service

What's the issue?
Been to loads of supermarkets abroad and this is standard practice, Not complicated.

I guess it's to stop theft. i presume you can exit elsewhere if you haven't actually brought anything but it is just a way of ensuring people don't try and sneak through without paying for stuff.

Maybe it will make a difference to the amount of theft that occurs, which will make a difference to price rises. Stolen goods have to be paid for somehow and I’d rather spend a few seconds scanning something, than let people get away with stealing.

The staff will be doing other jobs rather than manning the tills. There was a time when people were suspicious of supermarkets, because they’re self service, then didn’t like self service or fast track tills.

How does it prevent theft?

I've arrived at a self service till after someone and it was clear they scanned their shopping but never paid and just walked out. If they had to have a receipt to leave, I assume it would cut down theft.

HundredMilesAnHour · 17/12/2022 13:32

My Sainsburys tried this for a week and it caused complete chaos so it was quickly abandoned.

PatientZorro · 17/12/2022 13:33

It’s been introduced at my local (large) Sainsbury’s with no trouble at all. It ain’t rocket science!

Toddlerteaplease · 17/12/2022 13:34

Not seen this before. But last time I went to sainsbury's, I really didn't like some of the staff wearing body cams. Don't know why it bothered me, but I felt uncomfortable being filmed just picking up an eBay parcel.

That made me feel sad. I guess it's the abuse they might get when confronting people.

No bots here.

But it is the fact that it carries on in Europe and there doesn't seem to be many issues that prompted me to start this.

Why are there concerns in the UK when it seems to be a non issue in Europe?

Fair enough @ClydeFrog, do what you like. LOL though at you suggesting posters are Sainsbury’s bots because they have been able to adapt to a change that makes the customers lives easier. You don’t like change - fair enough. I’m ok with it, sorry that annoys you but it doesn’t make me a stealth Sainsbury’s PR.

Do as you wish but it’s silly to call people ‘bots’.

Out of interest have you tried scan and go?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 17/12/2022 13:48

Nah. I'll shop elsewhere thanks

Ditto. In a shop that doesn't assume from the get-go that I'm a shoplifter on no evidence whatsoever.

PatientZorro · 17/12/2022 13:50

Why are people so salty about a supermarket introducing this and some customers finding it more convenient? It’s weird.

Notparticularlyslappable · 17/12/2022 13:50

How do you slam a supermarket? It’s a fuckoff great building. Think most the doors are automatic too. Pretty impossible to slam them.

It's a difference of opinion. Isn't that what these threads are about, people having opinions?

I did a scan and go the other week, paid for about £250 worth of shopping and the alarm still set off on me.. the lady came over and checked all the clothes I had for tags as that’s what she assumed had set off the alarm - it wasn’t until she picked up the pair of £3.75 pants that I threw in the trolley as a ‘maybe’ and forgot to scan that I realised 😅

to make it worse I thought If I own up to it while it’s in her hands checking it I would loo guilty and be arrested for stealing.. then she put them back in and said “your ok, there’s no tags. Have a nice day” and at that point ehe panic set in further because I thought.. how can I own up to it now she’ll wonder why I didn’t say anything in the first place. So I just left.. stealing a £3.75 pair of pants🥲 it’s a first for me, I hope I don’t get a taste for it and become a serial stealer 😂😂

I've noticed similar at saisburys. They check the tag is deactivated but rarely bother asking for the receipt, they just seem to assume that if you are trying to leave the scan and shop or self checkout areas that you have paid!!

PatientZorro · 17/12/2022 13:58

Well yes, but it’s weird to call people bots and get stroppy about it. I like using self serve, others don’t. This is fine, no need to get wound up.

Precipice · 17/12/2022 13:59

I encountered this practice for the first time in Poland this summer in a large Carrefour. Smaller supermarkets with self-check outs did not do this practice.

I was there three times and twice the lady manning the self-check outs had to come and help me. The receipts didn't scan properly.

I disagree strongly with some PP that there's no problem leaving. The way these supermarkets were set up is to have entry with one-way flaps, so you can't leave the way you came easily in the way you can in some supermarkets in the UK. I think Carrefour itself might have one where you can go the other way, but I'm not certain of this. Smaller supermarkets with flap entry often don't.

The way then is to leave through the actual tills, but this isn't so easy either, because they're not wide, so you have to try to excuse yourself through them. If they're not open, the barriers there are closed so you can't leave through them. To be fair, this same set-up exists in some supermarkets without any self-service. It's a massive pain.

For the upthread comment about who are those people who browse supermarkets - maybe there are few. But there are people who go to buy one specific thing and find that it's not in stock.

Pearl664 · 17/12/2022 14:03

I don't often go to Sainsburys but I went this week and had to scan the receipt. I can't see the problem. Nothing to get worked up about. When I go to Lidl I have to enter my registration and scan my receipt for free parking. That's no big deal either.

It's quite straightforward if you can grasp the fact that a word can have more than one meaning.

You’re fairly aggressive for a question, it’s quite funny but a bit odd to be so wound up.

Wondered if you had tried and not liked it

I wasn’t that fussed but only after using it did I think yeh that’s better.

hmmmintereting · 17/12/2022 14:15

Yep, created a bottle neck in my local Sainsburys. I don't have inside information on shoplifting but would assume thief's would buy something in an attempt to look legit? So how much is this actually saving?

YouScumbagYouMaggotHeresKevinTheCarrot · 17/12/2022 14:18

Scan and shop is fine until you get picked for a random search then they upend all your carefully packed bags and leave you to deal with the mess!

cakeorwine · 17/12/2022 14:31

Well yesterday - I got selected for a scan and go random check. Which was fine. I then paid contactless and the machine decided that it just needed to check my PIN.

There are lots of ways that things can be stolen and fraud can take place, especially with higher card limits.

I guess the shops and banks think these new technologies and systems will save them money.
