People 'slamming' Sainsburies for having to scan till receipt to leave self service

What's the issue?
Been to loads of supermarkets abroad and this is standard practice, Not complicated.

I guess it's to stop theft. i presume you can exit elsewhere if you haven't actually brought anything but it is just a way of ensuring people don't try and sneak through without paying for stuff.

It's pretty standard in French supermarkets now, it's not hard to work out.

More annoying is in France you have to remember to get a little bar code sticker for any loose fruit or veg as their self service check outs often do not weigh loose items.

We are ge erally vatching up with a lot of Europe on automation. They have implemented it earlier as they are higher wage economies. Until recently we have had a lot of cheap, widely available labour so it has not made sense for companies to invest as much in to automation. Now places are investing more. Uniqlo is the first clothes shop I have seen with self checkouts in London.

ITSU now has many branches that are pretty much fully automated.

I can see people complaining if they introduce the number system for fruit and veg - so you have to remember the number when you weigh them.

Or having to weigh bread rolls etc instead of buying them per item.

I was in Asda a few weeks ago, walked up to the self checkout, previous person's shopping was still on the screen not checked out. I walked back to the person supervising who immediately radio-ed door security. It literally took a moment for me to click that the woman before me had stolen her basket of shopping.

There will be more people chancing theft in these desperate times I guess.

Phrenologistsfinger · 17/12/2022 11:11

Sorry, it’s BPAs on receipts not pthalates, so many things to avoid, hah!

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/12/2022 11:13

Sainsbury's have also has cameras on self service tills for a while as well.

girlmom21 · 17/12/2022 11:13

What's wrong with the old beepy barriers ay the door?

They're making it harder to just not buy anything - like aldi where its impossible to get out if there's nothing you want.

Haven’t come across this in my local Sainsbury’s. Does it automatically generate a receipt as I get asked if I want one or not?

Me neither. And there's no gate on self scan or scan and shop at "my" store (at least there wasn't on Monday) I always take my receipt but many don't, so that would need to a bottleneck when they realise they are stuck.

Butchyrestingface · 17/12/2022 11:18

I've never heard of this! Mind you, it's a while since I've been in Sainsbury's. Sounds like it could generate a lot of wasted paper if you don't need/want a receipt but system forces one on you anyway.

I would hope that they thought through these scenarios before implementing it. Maybe did a fact finding exercise in France?

And they are only in some shops at the moment.

apparently a sainsburys near me is ALL self service,
i never collect the receipt i just assume they will have to trust me
what is the receipt going to prove?
they would have to search your bags
what a ridiculous idea.

JRHartley72 · 17/12/2022 11:19

It's the timing and the inference. We're in a cost of living crisis with supermarkets jacking up their prices across the board and it really does feel in some cases they're exploiting it and suddenly they're introducing this as though everyone's going to start nicking stuff. You could argue it demonstrates a new distrust and disrespect of their customers.

Frazzled2207 · 17/12/2022 11:19

Not happening in our sainsburys where at the self scanners the receipts are optional

that said I entirely accidentally managed to leave the self scanning area without the payment having gone through once. Nobody said anything until I realised in the car I hadn’t actually paid. Went back in and they were very nice about it. I can totally see that they want to stop that happening! Either accidentally or deliberately

JRHartley72 · 17/12/2022 11:21

We have them now in our big Sainsbury's superstore in London.

Willmafrockfit · 17/12/2022 11:22

i nearly left with all my shopping without my payment being approved.
no one noticed, apart from me, and that was by chance

MarshaBradyo · 17/12/2022 11:22

This is new in one but not the other

I usually say no to receipt to save paper but the one with the opening barrier just says wait for receipt

Actually self service checkouts were installed in the UK in large numbers before the Europeans caught up. Likewise home delivery services started far earlier and are more prevalent in the UK than most of Europe. But the equipment they’ve installed and that you see in EU shops is now more advanced, as they were later to the party. As Uk supermarkets replace or upgrade existing equipment we’ll see the spread of the gates etc. Not they really help much, because to defeat them you just need a trolley and a basket with a few things in. Scan and pay for the basket, take the receipt, open the gate and wheel out the trolley ;)

NeedToChangeName · 17/12/2022 11:23

Standard practice at Costco too

Rapunzel22 · 17/12/2022 11:24

Not in my Sainsburys ( all 3 of them) but one you have to have your receipt to then get a parking voucher to validate your parking. This causes hold ups- 6 machines for a massive Sainsburys but it is in the centre of a town.

Willmafrockfit · 17/12/2022 11:25

its not going to stop thieves though,

I used scan and ship so am used to occasional random bag checks anyway. Well twice in several years - the assistants computer has just told them to pick x a.ount of items randomly. If they want to do the whole shop they'll find me sitting on the bench when they have finished.

starfishmummy · 17/12/2022 11:26

I jse scan and shop. There are no ships involved.

Willmafrockfit · 17/12/2022 11:27

Yeah surely at best they'll just pay for a few items and steal others

It’s not in my nearest IKEA either.

Nor in mine, or in my local Sainsburys. In Sainsburys self service I often choose not to get a receipt if I'm not buying anything expensive or with a security tag and want go save on paper.

Presumably they only bleep if you're carrying something with a security tag or sticker on it?

ILoveeCakes · 17/12/2022 11:31

If they want to make sure I've paid for everything, then serve me - run it through the till yourself.
