People 'slamming' Sainsburies for having to scan till receipt to leave self service

What's the issue?
Been to loads of supermarkets abroad and this is standard practice, Not complicated.

I guess it's to stop theft. i presume you can exit elsewhere if you haven't actually brought anything but it is just a way of ensuring people don't try and sneak through without paying for stuff.

Wow! What a lot of fuss for nothing. Where I live this is normal, I never thought anything of it. As is weighing your fruit and veg yourselves using the number next to the price. It’s really not difficult, my DD at 5yo managed it fine.

NB if you don’t buy anything there is a specific exit for leaving without purchases. Again, not hard.

FinDevon · 17/12/2022 11:35

My supermarket has a security guard near the self checkouts. It is Tesco. That's not uncommon is it?

Willmafrockfit · 17/12/2022 11:37

there was a man in asda recently when i was shopping, i saw him put a packet of sausages in his own bag, who is going to stop him?
nobody

Willmafrockfit · 17/12/2022 11:39

and of course it saves on staff,
not every store has an online delivery picker
there is one person supposedly helping 10 self service tills.

CitronVert22 · 17/12/2022 11:40

I think it just feels like another way to make us do work because we aren't trusted, but they won't pay for enough staff to stop theft.

Self service tills are already laborious to use because they individually weight everything so are much slower than a proper till. And the scale makes packing a pain. Then there's the fact that there often aren't enough staff to man even the self service tills properly so lots are closed.

This is another faff I can do without and I don't want a receipt for a small shop. Nor do I want to have to mess around with an app.

The whole thing just says customers are an inconvenience.

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/12/2022 11:41

Who are all these people going in to supermarkets and buying nothing? They are not really places for an idle browse.

BeggyMitchell · 17/12/2022 11:42

I've been into my local Sainsbury's and just used the pharmacy a couple of times and I did feel a bit shady edging through an open till to get out.

At least if this was introduced I could show my receipt 🤷🏻‍♀️.

But then again if someone was just browsing are they looked at askance? Do they check their bags? Could be embarrassing.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 17/12/2022 11:43

I don't see the issue in it. It's not going to kill someone to hold their receipt until outside the shop. You do that in Costco, not to scan of course but you still have to hold on to it to show

I can see it happening around Christmas- people looking for specific things.

I’d be SO anxious if I was prevented from leaving a shop.

How do they do it? Do they keep the doors locked?

I know theft is a large problem but taking hostages isn’t the answer.

Well just keep your receipt then. It’s not hard.

Mine sells clothes and housewares. A browse of those is not unusual.

Willmafrockfit · 17/12/2022 11:45

you might want to compare prices,
it is not illegal to browse anywhere

LadyLapsang · 17/12/2022 11:45

@Ginmonkeyagain You might go in for one particular item that they don’t have. Does this mean you then have to ask all the people at a staffed till to stand aside so you can exit? I don’t think people doing a big Christmas shop will be happy with that. Also, aren’t some Sainsbury stores places to get goods delivered for click and collect?

iwasaterribleteen · 17/12/2022 11:46

I suppose people are annoyed as Sainsbury's have cut the number of cashiers (to save money).

You then have to use self service but they don't trust you aren't stealing their products!

I've been to places where they have looked through bags - or asked you not to bring big bags in.

how on earth can you go shopping without big bags? how big are we talking?

Changechangychange · 17/12/2022 11:48

user1498572889 · 17/12/2022 11:00

They are not doing it in my sainsburys. I was in there this morning.

Same. Hadn’t heard anything about it before opening this thread.

I have no objection in principle (though I have never seen this in Germany, Austria, or Spain, so isn’t that universal in Europe). Their communication has been total shit though.

MarshaBradyo · 17/12/2022 11:48

If you don’t buy anything you just walk out main doors I suppose. In our one it’s only on smart / scan shop aisle

cakeorwine · 17/12/2022 11:49

Like carrying rucksacks with you.

Or large suitcases.

Didn't even know MSN was still a thing!!

Not in my local Sainsburys yet but it sounds like a great idea. No "slamming" from me

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/12/2022 11:51

@LadyLapsang well just don't walk out via the self service bit then!

Most supermarkets don't make you walk through the till area to leave. You can even leave back through the front door.

I really don't see the issue, there have been security scanners and real live security guards in supermarkets for years. This is just another level of security, one that is already common in many countries. In the small Fench seaside town we were in this summer it was in the local supermarket and everyone managed to use it perfectly fine.

Willmafrockfit · 17/12/2022 11:51

no rucksacks and the like would be annoying for those who came on foot or by bus and specifically use rucksacks for their shopping

Florenz · 17/12/2022 11:52

Before long there will be trolleys that automatically scan your shopping when you put it in, you won't have to stop at all, just walk out with your trolley and the cost of your shopping will automatically be deducted from your account.

sonjadog · 17/12/2022 11:57

I live in a country where this is normal. When self-service tills were introduced, there wasn't special information about this in advance. We just did it. It really isn't a big deal.

ScroogeMcDuckling · 17/12/2022 11:57

I’m confused by this one, having never seen it

I thought you had to ask for a receipt these days in the “green effort”,

There is an Amazon local near to me, I haven’t used it yet, but a couple of friends who live within walking distance off of it, say you go in, pick your stuff up and leave and it automatically charges your card - Its seems surreal.
