It seems to be rife! Basically, bad cold / flu like symptoms, chesty cough (not Covid) BUT, it hits you like a freight train for about a week, then you feel better for a few days BUT IT COMES BACK WORSE?

I can’t recall ever feeling this rough, and it’s not just me there are 13 children off school in my child’s class with the same thing, and the parents in the group chat saying similar although some lucky ducks have dodged it.

Wondering if this is happening everywhere or just in our wee village?

We have all had a bad cold before but the fact it goes and comes back is weird, it’s really dragging on now I’m into the third week of it.

Yabu - no such thing happening near us
Yanbu - it’s everywhere and I’m sick of it now

I'm glad people have said about the depression-I thought it was just me-I feel so maudlin and it's not like me at all.
And the neon snot. I can't believe the amount of snot I have isn't some sort of medical marvel!

spiderlight · 16/12/2022 17:36

Yep. DH had it for nearly a month, then I got it, then his came back and now mine is back as well. Horrible, horrible unrelenting cough - I'm absolutley exhausted. I had to go for my smear test on Tuesday (which was during the lull after the first week of it) and the nurse told me absolutely everyone seems to have it.

oakleaffy · 16/12/2022 17:13

IS there a new strain?
Does it give one a very painful sore throat?

Yes - apparently a severe sore throat is the main symptom of Covid now and has been for a few months. My teen DS had it at the beginning of the summer holidays and he was in absolute agony with it. No other symptoms apart from being vaguely coldy, but he spent two days in bed and could only swallow yoghurt.

Twizbe · 16/12/2022 17:39

I actually said to my husband that I felt depressed by this illness.

I just wasn't getting better it was horrible.

ChristmasTreeBaubles · 16/12/2022 17:40

Dd had just got over a dry cough and then started a horrendous cold/cough combo that has gone into her chest. Day 7 now. I’ve had a few aches and pains all week but no cough/cold, so hopefully I’ve fought it off before it kicked in. Poor dd though. She’s really miserable. Coughing until she almost vomits.

WhatNoPeas · 16/12/2022 17:43

Yep! I posted about this a week or so ago. I'm now better but it took about 2 weeks and was worse than covid.

I'm being a mardy arse too. I've tested at the start but may do another, I've had flu twice and plenty of colds but never felt this wretched.

nildesparandum · 16/12/2022 17:49

I am in my second week now.Had a very sore throat last week, it went away or a couple o days then was replaced by a throbbing frontal headache then when that cleared on came a terrible pain in my face.Had me at screaming point with the pain.
I have COPD but breathing was not affected.I can only take pain killers with no aspirin content as am on blood thinners due to pulmonary embolism three months ago.I ran out of paracetamol so had to have a family member bring me more.
It has cleared now but am dizzy with the pain killers.

Andsoforth · 16/12/2022 17:52

I can’t stand lemsip but I make my own version with honey, lemon, ginger and hot water. And take a paracetamol with it. It’s much nicer, and you can adjust the ginger depending on how masochistic congested you feel.

It’s a rotten dose. I just can’t eat. Even when I think I’d like something I only manage a bite or two.

Icequeen01 · 16/12/2022 17:52

OMG I've found my people!

I started to feel unwell on Monday with what I assumed was Covid - I had someone in my car 3 days before for about an hour who tested positive the next day. I have tested every day since Monday but always negative. I have the worst cough I have ever had, raging fever, fatigue, no appetite and have been in bed since Tuesday. When I have tried to get up I feel spaced out and just odd. I work in a school and had so much to do before we broke up, none of which I have been able to do so I will have to catch-up over the holidays.

I actually feel like I could eat something now which hopefully is a good sign but after reading your posts I am worried I might go downhill again. I literally feel like crying. Had my Xmas colour and cut booked for tomorrow along as well as having my nails done. I've had to cancel both so as well as feeling like shit I will look like it too!

But the worst thing is I have actually had to resort to using a sanitary towel as when I cough or sneeze it's so violent I end up peeing my pants!!! What the hell 😬😬

Watsername · 16/12/2022 17:54

I have had a nasty bug this week. It affected my asthma and have been left with a chesty cough after having 3 days of intermittent fever. I think it’s flu. Definitely not Covid (4 negative tests, and only a month on from LFT positive Covid). 7/30 off in my class one day this week.

Mine’s not as bad as some of yours, BUT I have had the flu jab, so I guess it’s made it better than it might have been otherwise?

Those who are really suffering- have you had a flu jab?

Donkeyotey · 16/12/2022 17:55

I've had it for about 3 weeks! Got better then got a lot worse a few days ago. Coughing fits so bad that I retch. Tight chest like someone is sitting on it. Fever started a few days ago. Weird clicking in my ears. I'm so fed up!

MoirasSaggyBundles · 16/12/2022 17:56

My husband had a flu and covid jab just before I game down with lurgy 1. Out of our family unit, he's the only one who has not got ill. I have been called to have them, but have just felt too ill to have them done.

Icequeen01 · 16/12/2022 17:56

I've had my flu jab and my Covid booster (I'm over 50) so had it in November.

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 16/12/2022 17:56

I’ve had a flu jab, yes - but I don’t think the jab protects against every strain?

No flu jab here! Hopefully you’re right and you’ll not get the brunt of it with your jab x

Day 6 here, I actually started off thinking I was hungover but couldn’t stop being sick which is unusual for me. I knew it was more when it carried on into Monday. I wFH Weds thinking I was better but then gave up again Thursday and stayed off today. Hoping I’m better by Monday. It’s proper wiped me out.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 16/12/2022 18:14

I feel you @Icequeen01 i had symptoms on Monday, came down with it properly on Tuesday. Pushed myself to work with sneezing/coughing/snot because I had so much to do but gave up this morning and went sick. Coughing so frequently & weeing at same time am contemplating getting incontinence pants 😂😂🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

zingerdoo · 16/12/2022 18:19

Yes! We all (me, DH, DD, mum and dad) all had it at the end of October/ begining of November and took around 2 weeks to start to recover. My mum took around a month to feel remotely ok. It was really awful but took 3 covid tests they were all negative.

ShowOfHands · 16/12/2022 18:31

We've had it going round at school. There were 160 off at its peak. Two students and a staff member ended up in hospital (clinically vulnerable) and swabbed as + for flu.

Range of symptoms and severity, as you'd expect with flu. And as most people with flu don't have symptoms and we've had a lull in mixing, I think it's spreading quite quickly.

I have it right now but it just feels like a very heavy cold. I'm praying it doesn't get any worse. My Big Christmas Clean is happening slowly with rests, tissues and blankets at regular intervals.

Bicurator · 16/12/2022 18:34

I’m on week 3, it’s a hard hitting one and I’m usually very hardy. I work in a school and we have loads off with it and lots are coming back and then going off again after a few days/a week.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 16/12/2022 18:34

I've got it now. Managed to wfh all day today and yesterday (colleague on hols) but straight to bed both nights. The cough is horrendous and very painful. I foresee a weekend in bed tbh. DH was floored by he and he never gets ill

H1Drangea · 16/12/2022 18:35

I’ve had the 4 covid jabs ( over 60 ) and a flu jab

Secondsop · 16/12/2022 18:36

I’ve had this all week and am just starting to come out of it so I think I’ve got away lightly unless it comes back, but 100% re it affecting mental health. Also it’s done something hormonal as my period started a few days early.

Wiloswisp · 16/12/2022 18:38

Jeez that blooming awful cough. I had it at least three weeks. DH who has underlying health issues has been ill since end of November. His went to a chest infection that he’s still suffering with, week two of antibiotics and it’s only just getting better, cough overnight is better but he has times when he coughs for up to thirty minutes at a time.

I took to wearing ear plugs at one point because he’s just so loud and no let up. Feel very sorry for him as he’s got a lot of other health things going on too.
I’ve felt a bit better in the past few days and finally saw off the cough, so that’s five weeks I think, but then this afternoon washed out and fell asleep.
