It seems to be rife! Basically, bad cold / flu like symptoms, chesty cough (not Covid) BUT, it hits you like a freight train for about a week, then you feel better for a few days BUT IT COMES BACK WORSE?

I can’t recall ever feeling this rough, and it’s not just me there are 13 children off school in my child’s class with the same thing, and the parents in the group chat saying similar although some lucky ducks have dodged it.

Wondering if this is happening everywhere or just in our wee village?

We have all had a bad cold before but the fact it goes and comes back is weird, it’s really dragging on now I’m into the third week of it.

Yabu - no such thing happening near us
Yanbu - it’s everywhere and I’m sick of it now

I forgot to say that I had the rolling nausea (week 1) and earache (week 2) too. It’s a really unpleasant bug. I’m strangely reassured to hear that others have had dizziness with this bug. It freaked me out.

I have had labyrinthitus before, properly, once and it is horrendous (as in had it so badly I couldn't lift my head off of the pillow for nearly a week and vomited constantly from it) and I was terrified it was coming back. But touch wood it hasn't - not like that anyway - more just lightheadedness and dizziness with movement. It's awful!

CoQ10 · 17/12/2022 21:23

I've had it for three weeks and just recovered. Evil cold, struggled for two weeks then fell apart last weekend and took week off work. Chronic sinus and headache all last week.
Inhalation before bed with Olbas Oil helped, as did sinus flush this week.
And loads of rest and sleep and healthy eating..

DS (5) has the most horrible persistent cough, dry, but just constant.

Jholli · 17/12/2022 22:23

Feeing horrific awful cough and sore throat for 8 weeks and I’m at the end of my tether. Girls 6 and 7 both have it now and are sleeping most of the day. For me it’s the tickly cough and the wheeze: I’m so annoyed with it! One day I think yay I’m better then bam it’s back like wtf

bellabasset · 17/12/2022 22:32

Mu ndn's ds has this and passed it to his dm. Both feeling very ropey and kept away from college/ work/ work does. The ds works part time so isn't sure if he picked it up there or at college. It's been doing the rounds there. The weather has been very cold and no-one I know with it has had the flu jabs.

Jholli · 17/12/2022 22:33

Yes I’ve got some sort of white dot under my tonsil very painful to swallow like a cut is in my throat

Jholli · 17/12/2022 22:34

MoirasSaggyBundles · 16/12/2022 21:01

Today's new arrival is smelling cigarette smoke? I keep asking dcs if they can smell it but it's just me. Anyone else had this?

Yes, definitely smelt a smoke smell - not cigarettes necessarily, but something burning.

Has anyone else had a sore/swollen throat for weeks?

Yes! Like razor blades. Even though all the other awful symptoms have finally begun to ease off (after 11 days), my throat is still as bad as ever.

White dots on/around your tonsils is sometimes bacterial tonsillitis. Ouch. I believe that's part of the current Strep A group of illnesses doing the rounds isn't it (not a medic so don't quote me on that!).

When my child has white dots on/around tonsils (before all this kicked off, a few months back when it was really hot actually I remember) along with a high fever, wasn't able to eat/drink well etc the GP prescribed penicillin which did clear it so was bacterial, for her.

Same - past experience with labyrinthitis means balance issues frighten me.

HollyHobbie12 · 17/12/2022 23:24

Been unwell most of this year with all the symptoms you describe. I think everyone's immune systems are really low what with masking and isolating for so long.

WorryMcGee · 17/12/2022 23:30

Yep. I’m due my third cycle of chemo on Wednesday as well and I can’t bloody shift it. If it delays it I’ll be furious. We all thought we were better last week then 8 month old DD got the snots back and lo and behold there it was again. I am so fed up of feeling like shit. It’s worse than the chemotherapy side effects and can get in the fucking bin 🤬🤬🤬🤬

Smugsmaug · 17/12/2022 23:34

Turned out to be covid when we had it, didn’t show on initial tests but did eventually, dragged on for ages 😢

We have another bug just before Xmas, hoping this one is milder and clears up soon, lots going around, hope you feel better soon

This really touched a nerve for me… I had labyrinthitis at 15 and it took over a year for it to be addressed properly and for the dizziness to begin to dampen down, balance issues frighten me too because of this, it’s almost like a ptsd thing at this point, anything that makes me dizzy induced huge anxiety. Sorry for the ramble, just have never in 18 years seen anybody else say it! X

I’m so sorry to read you are having to go through chemo, especially with such a young daughter to care for. Sending you lots of support and best wishes, I understand it must be a very worrying time. Xx

I'm only on day 3 of feeling horrendous but I've more than had enough of it already!
Please don't let there be worse to come. 😭

There's far too much to do at this time of year to feel like this.

lionsandwhales · 18/12/2022 00:26

It is reminds me of when my kids were in nursery, almost constant illnesses amongst household for the whole of winter, Same now in our school families. Our whole household has had OP illness over space of 4 weeks. Sudden onset flu-like. Lower chest painful cough, fevers. Feel better after a few days but downhill as soon as try to do normal activities. This is 2time (maybe we had one week when nobody was ill since late October)
There is some surveillance in uk to look for respiratory illness in the population but only in large significant numbers for flu and Covid. Could be any number of other viruses but we don’t know without testing for multiple types and and that doesn’t happen because it costs +++ to NHS and doesn’t change the outcome of treatment, care , public health actions etc. Hanker down with paracetamol, soup and T.V it will pass. 💐

ThaiDye · 18/12/2022 00:40

@HollyHobbie12 I think you mean everyone's immune systems are so low from catching COVID and other infections on top of that. This belief that we need exposure to infections to have string immunity is dangerous www.salon.com/2022/12/04/does-your-immune-system-need-a-workout-the-science-behind-immunity-debt-explained/

Lockdown ended in March 2021. We already had last winter to catch every illness going, so you really can't blame lockdown for "low immunity". Sweden never locked down and has a big surge of illness this winter too.

warofthemonstertrucks · 18/12/2022 08:13

I'm another one with dead fear of labrynthitus. I had if cry and if when the DD's were 5 and 6-for about 4 months. My mum had to come and mov won with us as I couldn't look after the girls or myself really. Anything the makes me even slightly
Dizzy now frightens me.
I think I'm on day 13 or 14 now and feeling slightly better. The cough is still here and painful. Sense of smell is intermittent. Can't smell anything then smell things that aren't there strongly for ten minutes or so, then back to nothing. Ears and nose still
Blocked but not as badly. Still feel wiped out. But hopefully coming out the other r side of it now.
Hope everyone else picks up soon

It took months for the drunken sailor swaying feeling to go after my first bout. I had travel sickness medication regular prescription for close to a year. I often get a milder attack for a couple of days when I get something viral now. The dizziness with this bug, although mild and not debilitating, stuck around for 10 days. It stirred up bad memories. 😕 I still have a sore throat this morning. I’m so fed up if feeling sub par.

boatyardblues · 18/12/2022 08:41

💐for WorryMcGee. This bug on top of chemo is so bloody unfair. I hope it doesn’t hold you up with your chemo.

Anxietyandwine · 18/12/2022 09:06

We got it about 4 weeks ago (DS 3 and I). Was rough for 7-10 days then got better but chesty cough lingered around. Then around a week ago hit like a ton of bricks with the worst chesty cough, again me and DS3. DH and Dd11 seem to have escaped it.

PumpkinPie2016 · 18/12/2022 09:18

I had it week before last and it was awful. Really bad chesty cough/achy/painful sore throat and barely any voice - I teach so that was fun 🙄

Thankfully, I teach secondary and the kids were amazing at staying quiet so I didn't have to project too much.

We've all.had it in school but it's tricky to take a duvet day as you know colleagues will have t cover you and if it's someone who doesn't teach your subject it can be very difficult.

GreatBigBeautifulTommorow · 18/12/2022 09:58

I have all the symptoms everyone describes, painful throat and sinuses, smoke smell, cough and feeling like shite…..tested positive for Covid.

how long does this last? 🙁

BadNomad · 18/12/2022 10:07

I'm pretty sure I have this too. Including the sore teeth and jaw thing! But I've only had negative LFTs. The latest is my sense of taste and smell has gone (well, the sense of smell has gone, and everything tastes awful). Feels like there is glass stuck in my throat, and my ribs are in agony from the coughing fits. The only positive has been the weight loss from sleeping more and not being able to eat.
