Can’t stop crying - our cat has been killed just before Christmas

Not that there is any good time to be hit by a car and lay overnight on the freezing road but this morning I got a call telling me my cat had been killed on the road I live on and someone was kind enough to pick her up and take her to the vet who scanned her and call me ..

she was 18 months old. I got to speak to the lady who found her and she informed me she literally found her dead outside my house on the road and now I’m haunted she nearly made it home .

I’ve cried on and off the whole day. Can’t bear to be in the house .

What an exceptionally beautiful cat, how sad to lose her at such a young age 😿

xogossipgirlxo · 15/12/2022 10:20

"I'm so sorry op, I have three indoor cats (two are rag dolls so too daft to go outside) but I've never let my cats outside as I don't think I could deal with the heartbreak which is probably really selfish of me."

How on earth is this selfish? It's rather responsible.

superdupernova · 15/12/2022 10:22

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm glad someone was kind enough to take her to the vet. I think I'd be more heartbroken if I found one of mine myself.

bengalcat · 15/12/2022 10:22

What a beautiful creature she was - so sorry for your loss x

HairyMcLarie · 15/12/2022 11:10

I'm so very sorry. She was beautiful.

This is why many cat lovers from outside the UK struggle to understand the culture of letting them free roam.

So sorry for your loss OP

That's hardly a helpful thing to say.

I've had 10 cats in my life.

One got killed on the road, five lived to 18 or 19, one was a rescue and died in her mid teens but we're not sure exactly, she was probably at least 15. One dumped us for someone else, one died young from illness.

Our current cat is 7 years old.

Sadly younger cats are at greatest risk from cars. Once they reach about two/two and a half the risk drops a lot.

GrolliffetheDragon · 15/12/2022 12:35

OP, your cat was beautiful, and I'm so sorry for your loss.

It's never unreasonable to grieve the loss of a friend whether human or animal. Take care Flowers

I'm so sorry for your loss OP.
Such a beautiful, precious girl.

onefedupmum · 15/12/2022 12:38

I'm so sorry op, she was a beautiful cat. Flowers

RinklyRomaine · 15/12/2022 12:43

I'm so sorry OP. I lost my cat soulmate at this time of year 3 years ago and don't think I'll ever stop grieving that boy. I have other cats, I've lost human beings (wtf is wrong with some people, it's not a competition) and I still feel his loss. It's a shit time of year and like you all I could think about was him out in the cold and dark like that. They don't leave us, not really. I still see my boy out of the corner of my eye all the time. Hugs to you and try to take some comfort from the life she had with you and that she probably had no idea really.

BringBackFoilWrappers · 15/12/2022 12:45

I'm so sorry.
After my dh lost his childhood pet cat at a young age we decided to keep our cats indoors, we have 3 cats plenty of toys and a giant cat tree and they all seem pretty happy.
The UK is not as safe a place for cats to free roam as it used to be.

Mamamia32 · 15/12/2022 13:42

I really don't think a debate about indoor/outdoor cats is appropriate on this thread. For what it's worth OP I would never judge anyone for allowing an animal to experience a full life with fresh air. Sorry for your loss.x

ThreeblackCats · 15/12/2022 13:47

This is very sad, but… at least you know what happened, lots of cats just disappear.
she had a loving home, lots of animals and some people never have that.
this time next year, you’ll think of her, talk of her and smile.

When I lose my cats I know it will break my heart too.

QueefQueen80s · 15/12/2022 15:22

@GrolliffetheDragon How come the risk drops, do they become more street smart?
Mine are 1.5 and don't want to let them out yet but want them to live a full life like my other cats did.

I've not read an explanation, but would guess that those who are warier of roads are more likely to survive, and also younger cats are perhaps more compulsive and take more risks might also contribute.

FuzzyPuffling · 15/12/2022 16:12

I'm so sorry. . She was a very beautiful girl. X

Ineedtocleanmywoodenblinds · 15/12/2022 16:15

I am so sorry, my kitten was killed a few months ago and we were all devastated. It's so cruel. Please take some time to grieve, to me it was like losing a member of the family, I honestly cried more when my cat died than when my mum died (long story). As I say it's been a few months but I still miss him so much.

Nowhereelsetogo90 · 15/12/2022 17:03

I’m so so sorry 😢 she was beautiful and I’m glad she had you and your family to love her. Squeezing my two kitties tightly tonight 😔 I wish there was something we could all say to help, grief is truly shit and a much loved pet is like losing a member of your family. Love and prayers to you all. ❤️

Secondsop · 15/12/2022 17:08

I’m so sorry. My lovely cat was killed on our road a couple of weeks ago and I’m so sad about it. We’d had him for 3 years without incident but then he seemed to work out that I crossed the road to go to work and started exploring over there. The night before he died I was crossing on the way home and he suddenly ran across with me so had been waiting for me. I can’t bear the idea that he went over to explore where I was going - I really thought after 3 years it wouldn’t be the road that got him. He was the perfect family pet and was so nice to my young children. I’m so sorry again for your loss.

Gooddaysandbad · 15/12/2022 17:19

I’m so sorry. The same thing happened to me last year. My lovely cat was hit in my cul de sac by a delivery driver on the 20th December. Just heart breaking. Massive hugs to you and I’m sorry for your loss.

Daleksatemyshed · 15/12/2022 17:25
