Can’t stop crying - our cat has been killed just before Christmas

Not that there is any good time to be hit by a car and lay overnight on the freezing road but this morning I got a call telling me my cat had been killed on the road I live on and someone was kind enough to pick her up and take her to the vet who scanned her and call me ..

she was 18 months old. I got to speak to the lady who found her and she informed me she literally found her dead outside my house on the road and now I’m haunted she nearly made it home .

I’ve cried on and off the whole day. Can’t bear to be in the house .

I'm so sorry for your loss Flowers she was clearly much loved in her life. Hugs to you and all posters who have lost their little pals.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Our sweet kitten was run over and killed in front of our house 40 years ago. They just left her lying there for us to find the next day. I still cried about it up until a few years ago.

Then my brother died, and then my mum, and I realised…

Pets are replaceable. People aren't.

Many cats and dogs have come and gone in our family in those 40 years. Yes we loved them all and every one of them was part of the family. Each one filled the hole left by the previous one.

But nothing can ever fill the hole left by my brother and my mum.

What happened to your kitty is sad. But you still have your children and your husband. And you can get another cat.

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh.

It's not a competition

The same happened to me in April. Very upsetting 🙁

OP hasn’t suggested losing her cat is worse than losing a family member. She is allowed to be sad that her cat has died, irrespective of how many family members you’ve lost. Saying “sorry I was harsh” doesn’t negate that fact this was a total dick comment to make. Do you think a post about someone being devastated over the loss of a pet is the place to be harsh? No, it’s absolutely not. No need at all.

CrikeyPeg · 14/12/2022 22:44

I'm so sorry, such a tough time xx

Pets are not replaceable. They are not objects. Yes, she can get a new cat but it won’t replace her old cat (R.I.P). Comparing grief is not helpful or even logical. I’m very sorry OP. x

Beautiful cat ❤️

Calvinlookingforhobbes · 14/12/2022 23:02

im so sorry. Losing a pet is devastating. I do understand your pain. What was her name? She is so lovely

MyGrandmaLizzie · 14/12/2022 23:24

So sorry to hear about your beautiful cat.

Mercy1968 · 14/12/2022 23:28

Oh what a lovely little cat.
I m so sorry for your loss. I lost my lovely tabby girl Ruby 5 years ago now in almost the same situation. She was 8.
I couldn't stop crying either and fwiw pets are family.
I lost my father last year and was also crying for ages and I haven't come to terms with either of those losses.
Allow yourself to grieve, she was your family and your friend and she mattered.

I think it's so awful because it's such a shock and so unfair. Whoever hit my Ruby left her too.
We live on a 20mph street but lots of people speed.

Justonecat · 14/12/2022 23:31

Oh no. She was absolutely beautiful. I’m
so sorry 😢

This is awful. I'm sure OP knows important people in our lives dying is worse, this is still really horrific.
There is "finding the silver lining/getting perspective" and then there is an unempathetic response like yours. When we lose someone or an animal, there is no perspective to be found. Just raw emotion and pain.
I bet you go around telling people who are going through a shit time "at least you're not starving in Africa"

SkylightSkylight · 15/12/2022 00:09

LimeTwists · 14/12/2022 21:13

This isn’t about you.

nor is it about you.

you can't replace a cat or a dog, you can get another, but it doesn't replace the one that died.

you can have more children, you can have another husband, so we shouldn't grieve for them either??

id like to suggest you don't post that on any other thread. It's not helpful, not kind, not needed.

CrownTheTurkey · 15/12/2022 00:21

@SkylightSkylight have you quoted the wrong poster?

Itslookinglikeabeautifulday · 15/12/2022 01:38

That's awful. I'm so sorry. I lost my lovely cat just over a year ago. (Hit by a car not long after he had ventured out that morning.) I guess you just have to console yourself with the fact they had a terrific, if all too short, life with you. Xx

romdowa · 14/12/2022 20:45

Big hugs , we witnessed our kitten being ran over during the summer. I was waving at the car to get it to stop but they didn't even try. Just rolled over our cat at full speed. He died in my husbands arms while he roared his heart out. It was horrific. We cried for days. We also had to rehome the kittens sibling as we were so afraid of the road. Thankfully to my parents but it means we lost both cats the same night. It's so hard 😫

That just made me cry in a cafe, how utterly horrific I'm so sorry.

I'm sorry for your loss also OP. What a beautiful cat. Flowers

Brought back memories of a St Bernard puppy I lost at just 10 months. I was 7 years old and the emotional pain was horrific.

This is a really horrible post and by this logic humans are replaceable you can always have more children, you can always get another husband etc but no one would ever say that (and rightly so).

You can't just replace an animal, a pet they are family to some people and yes you can get another but you can never replace them.

I'm so sorry op, I have three indoor cats (two are rag dolls so too daft to go outside) but I've never let my cats outside as I don't think I could deal with the heartbreak which is probably really selfish of me.

She was well loved, and cared for at the very end so please take some comfort in that.

Would you like to tell us more about her? Sometimes talking can help grief but completely understand if not.

Take it one day at a time, sending love Flowers

Floralnomad · 15/12/2022 02:17

@KrystynaZ , your post isn’t harsh , it is downright nasty and unfeeling . If you seriously think you can replace your pets just by getting another I suggest you should not have pets at all as you obviously don’t treasure them correctly like a normal feeling person .
