Did anyone buy into the Popsy dress hype during covid.

There was a new dress release every Friday at 12:00. Fans of the dress would eagerly wait for noon and then there would be loads of whinging by people who didnt get lucky because the dresses had sold out instantly. Many people complained that the dress was in their checkout basket but got taken out/

The facebook page was fierce. Anyone that dared critise the quality of the fabric was instantly shut down.
Every week it was virtually the same two dress styles but in different fabrics.
I'd forgotten about it until my friend called around last night seeing if I wanted one of her old dresses.

It's all very bizarre. Folk buying dresses they know are the wrong size because they're caught up in the Friday frenzy and then selling them a couple of days later. Endless 'Look at me, I'm so quirky and original' posts and seemingly a complete failure to see that they've all adopted an instantly recognisable uniform. Sharing their child's private medical details, presumably without their consent. Trigger warnings about wobbly teeth...

Please tell me that was an exaggeration and somebody didn't actually put a trigger warning about wobbly teeth!?!?

EuphemiaLives · 03/05/2023 14:58

@SchoolTripDrama I swear, it's an actual post 🙈

Late to the thread I know but someone at work has just discovered Popsy and was talking about the FB groups, so I had a nosy.

What I can’t fathom is how so many people have them to sell, either new or worn once. Is this due to the Friday buying frenzy? They are charging almost the same as new from the shop.

Yes, it's because they're terrified of missing out on a popular dress, even when they know it's not their taste or style. Some people will buy dresses in multiple sizes for this reason too. For some reason, people think it's then more cost-effective to sell on the unwanted size than return it.

I'm in the group so have just done a quick search. The majority of warnings are for things like loss and grief and medical conditions which gives you some idea of the oversharing to that occurs.

Others are yes, wobbly teeth, "fuel bills", "accident" (she was sharing a lovely picture of herself in a dress, she had no need to mention that she'd bumped her head otherwise), "mentions a bad week", and someone asking for a trigger warning on a picture of a frog.

We had (some) restrictions, not a 'lockdown'.

It's a stupid tabloid expression which somehow became common usage despite us being able to go out when we wanted, buy what we liked assuming the shop was open and generally go about our business in a way that the people in countries with police in their streets checking papers and who weren't permitted to go more than 50m from their door unless it was to the (provably) nearest food shop or pharmacy could only dream of. Or those who were shut in their buildings and not allowed out at all.

Like the idea that only an hour a day was legally allowed for exercise or that you were only allowed to buy staple/basic food at the shops, it's a myth peddled by the gutter press and taken up by twats like Johnson to scare the mouth breathers who buy their papers.

What in the actual fuck are you talking about? That wasn't a myth! We were only allowed to go out for an hour a day for exercise and all non essential shops were closed. Hang on.... were you one of the mouth breathers that ignored the restrictions?

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 03/05/2023 18:09

The ‘one hour a day’ was a myth. It was ‘only go out once a day as much as that is possible’.

Popsy clothes are bonkers and the FB group is even more bonkers!

Did you honestly think we were only allowed out for an hour a day? 😳 I have not come across anybody before, either in real life or online that thought that. Non essential shops were shut as you say, we couldn’t go into other people’s houses, some people had “bubbles”, but no, there was never an hour a day outside rule. Not if you were in the UK anyway, if you were in China, I think they were very strict.

RausageSoul · 04/05/2023 06:09

Place is very odd, and too many women posting pics of their undies and tights, I hope there's proper moderation in place from pervs

RNBrie · 04/05/2023 06:24

The one hour thing was a myth. Matt Hancock said something like "you can go outside once a day for things like an hour of exercise..."

But it was never a rule that it could only be for an hour. It was widely reported that it was a rule and many people didn't get the memo that it wasn't actually the case.

BritInAus · 04/05/2023 06:34

This lefty (non geography) teacher is a fan!

Oysterbabe · 04/05/2023 08:01

I've never heard of them but I've had a nose on their website and it's the kind of stuff I wear. Looks like a cheaper version of Sugarhill Brighton, where I normally buy my dresses.

BusterGonad · 04/05/2023 09:55

I'm guessing it is popular due to the inclusive sizes, price point and limited edition stuff. It makes people feel special and the fact that all sizes can wear them means it's hitting a target which most stores don't. The Facebook groups etc are a means for lonely people/sahm/people who find it hard to get out, to have chats etc and feel part of a something. I personally don't own any of their stuff but it's pretty easy to see why they are so popular.

Choconut · 04/05/2023 10:02

I've never heard of them but they look a lot nicer than all the Missguided and Nasty Girl crap.

Bargellobitch · 04/05/2023 10:06

I personally think they have cute prints but the shapes have always been a bit off for me so I've never bought anything. I didn't know anything about this group though or Friday released! Bonkers

defi · 04/05/2023 10:16

Never heard of them but I can picture the kind of person that buys them.

Quirky bags, irregular choice shoes, lover of vintage, probably white

Basically this lady

Did anyone buy into the Popsy dress hype during covid.
Enncee · 04/05/2023 11:16

Never heard of them before, so just had a look at the website. I don't fancy looking like an oversized toddler and being ripped off to do so, so I'll pass!
A lot of the dresses look quite frumpy too, odd that they're so popular but as they say, there's nowt so queer as folk.

defi · 04/05/2023 11:20

I'm curious, what do Geography teachers who vote Tory wear?

^^boden, quality outdoor brands, M&S

Adifferentheadspace · 04/05/2023 11:21

I like the dresses and have a few of the summer ones as they really suit my shape, plus the price point is attractive. There’s a few I wouldn’t touch with a barge pole as I don’t like the designs and/or think they look frumpy, but that applies to most brands in my experience. The group sounds horrifying and bonkers though.

TeaPleaseTa · 04/05/2023 17:22

It’s also a bit weird that the FB page uses she/her for frocks. But each to their own…
