Did anyone buy into the Popsy dress hype during covid.

There was a new dress release every Friday at 12:00. Fans of the dress would eagerly wait for noon and then there would be loads of whinging by people who didnt get lucky because the dresses had sold out instantly. Many people complained that the dress was in their checkout basket but got taken out/

The facebook page was fierce. Anyone that dared critise the quality of the fabric was instantly shut down.
Every week it was virtually the same two dress styles but in different fabrics.
I'd forgotten about it until my friend called around last night seeing if I wanted one of her old dresses.

They are NOT made in the UK btw. They are 'designed' in the UK, but made and shipped from China.

I did buy one as I am a fan in more interesting prints. But the fabric was shite and bobbled quickly. And while they may go up to a size 24, their designs are not flattering for those sizes.

My Popsy dress I'm holding right now says "Made in the UK' on the label!?

@NoNewsIsGoodNews Please look at the post I'm replying to. I'm not taking offence at general constructive criticism! I'm replying to nastiness aimed at making wearers of these dresses feel ugly in them. Is it really that hard to understand?!

‘Never heard of them but just looked at Popsy dress on google images and a load of hideous, cheap looking, dreadfully patterned, frumpy dresses appeared.‘

This is what you replied to. I am sorry you feel rubbish, I really am. But the PP just made a comment on how much she hated the dresses. That’s allowed in my book. She was not being nasty about anyone personally.

If someone said that about something I love wearing, I would shrug and carry on wearing it. This is about your sensitivities.

Cathyandchris · 11/01/2023 15:48

Just because a person thinks a dress is hideous, doesn’t mean they think the wearer is hideous. I don’t understand why people get so upset that other people don’t like the same things as them? Reels of insecurity. You like it, you wear it - I don’t give a shit. But you’d never see me in one of those dresses ever - they look like grandma clothes. Hideous.

LJAKS · 11/01/2023 16:03

I did 😳 I have more than I’ll ever admit to. But the quality is shit and the prices keep going up. It’s a marketing wet dream tbh and the group is very “inclusive” 🥴 it’s a bit like a strangely dressed cult I’ve come to realise 😂

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 11/01/2023 16:54

I hadn’t heard anything about the brand or dressed but just had a quick look. Not my thing. They remind me of them jazzy leggings that went crazy in America and ended up been a weird cult MLM company. I can’t remember the name but there’s a documentary about it.

Leggingslife · 11/01/2023 16:56

Love them and own lots. Finally dresses that are comfy and stretchy.

RuthW · 11/01/2023 17:07

I love Popsy dresses. Fun prints, very comfy, pockets and they actually fit.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 11/01/2023 17:25

Can’t say I’d ever heard of them before this thread. Just looked and can’t say dresses with images of toadstools, squirrels and pears are my idea of style. And I really dislike it when parents wear the same fabric / clothing as their kids.

They’re all too twee for me.

RausageSoul · 11/01/2023 18:18

Bobbly tit dresses?

YouHaveAnArse · 27/01/2023 15:42

I like quirky prints, I am put off by the fabrics, and the FB group scares me a bit. I hate when you join a group that's about eg. fashion or beauty and it just ends up being people writing posts about completely irrelevant things, especially if they're massively oversharing.

JustDanceAddict · 27/01/2023 15:57

Never heard of them but I just looked & like the jumpsuits! I don’t wear dresses much & have enough for my needs.

juice92 · 27/01/2023 16:44

This has brought back memories - because I definitely fell for the hype 😅I reckon I bought about 7 or 8 in total and not one has stayed in my wardrobe. I found they didn't fit me very well and the ones did fit a bit better bobbled after only a couple of wears. I now haven't bought from them in over 2 years but I'm still in the Facebook group- still the same moaning plus drama.

Cakecakecheese · 27/01/2023 17:19

A large proportion of my wardrobe is popsy dresses, they make me happy. You'll probably hate my shoes and handbags too. And my home decor 😁

ballroompink · 27/01/2023 17:30

Not my style at all but the FB group antics sound exactly like the Lucy & Yak FB group which I left ages ago due to how ridiculous it all was!

LlynTegid · 27/01/2023 17:37

I didn't hear of it during the pandemic restrictions (in England we did not have a lockdown except for those clinically extremely vulnerable), and am glad I did not.

I don't give Mark Zuckerberg my custom or data so perhaps a blessing if this was how bad it got for some.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 27/01/2023 17:38

There's something about facebook groups that encourages a cult like devotion to a brand, and in turn a mania for spending in the fear of losing out. I was in the Caroline Hirons skincare group for a while and those people were splurging hundreds of pounds every few months on her kits. And were so slavish in their devotion to her. God knows why.

Was about to say the same. I can’t stand either brand, very much not my thing but my SIL wears it, she’s very quirky and she looks brilliant but totally different style to me

UnicorseTime · 27/01/2023 17:59

I love Lucy and yak. I love these dresses bit I'm too large 😳. But then I'm a teacher and if the stars had aligned I'd be a psychologist!

SortingOutStuff · 27/01/2023 18:01

I'd never heard of them before until this thread but they give me the ick. They look like something Styled by Susie would swear by and recommend Confused

GuyFawkesDay · 27/01/2023 18:06

Tamarindtree · 11/01/2023 06:21

They look like they would be worn by a Lefty Geography teacher.

Cheers 🙄

Why do they always pick on us poor geography teachers?!

I didn’t say anyone couldn’t comment on it? I merely replied to the comment that I thought it was quite common to buy clothes for holiday. Also FYI it is definitely not unusual to buy specific clothes for a Disney holiday. Lots of people there seem to be wearing outfits or accessories that I doubt they would wear elsewhere. One of my dresses has carousels on it another has giraffes all over it, and no I wouldn’t wear a carousel or giraffe dress anywhere else. I also have a collection of “ears” I wouldn’t wear them anywhere else either.

You mean you don't wear your mouse ears to the supermarket?!

I've bought clothes especially for holidays to Disneyworld, I don't really see what the issue is apart from snobbery.

Bowsersfightnight · 27/01/2023 18:40

I think the jumpsuits are quite nice to be honest! Dresses aren’t my style but they’re not awful in the way some people are making out! Lots of companies have people who get a bit overexcited about their drops etc

Eh? Are we living in the same England!? There very much was a prolonged people of time where English citizens were to stay at home, not socialise with anyone outside of their own household and only leave the house for exercise and/or essential business.

It wasn't a "lockdown" like many other countries where you needed legal papers to leave the house but literally everyone I know calls that period "lockdown". Bizarre that you don't - especially on a British forum where we all know exactly what happened.

And yeah, months on end at home sent some people a little bonkers (and dress-obsessed apparently)

Boris or Matt Hancock, is that you?
