Did anyone buy into the Popsy dress hype during covid.

There was a new dress release every Friday at 12:00. Fans of the dress would eagerly wait for noon and then there would be loads of whinging by people who didnt get lucky because the dresses had sold out instantly. Many people complained that the dress was in their checkout basket but got taken out/

The facebook page was fierce. Anyone that dared critise the quality of the fabric was instantly shut down.
Every week it was virtually the same two dress styles but in different fabrics.
I'd forgotten about it until my friend called around last night seeing if I wanted one of her old dresses.

Never heard of them until now.

They look like they would be worn with Irregular Choice shoes.

😂😂😂

Agree.

Mn is also always sneery about polyester - the amount of it on the high street suggests most people are happy with it though..

An argument based on popularity is a logical fallacy. Something can be popular and crap.

Something’s going on with Popsy this week. Lots of bad reviews have suddenly been written on Trustpilot. It looks like they banned a lot of people from their Facebook group for some reason and now they’re upset.

Autumnlife678 · 01/02/2024 11:41

Looks like they’ve been trying to get some of the bad reviews taken down, but clearly people are really upset about something so something has happened.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 01/02/2024 12:20

tbh it has a similar cult feel to what styled by susie used to have and that imploded somewhat.

UnicorseTime · 01/02/2024 13:37

Oooh now I'm curious. I want to know what happened!

notacooldad · 01/02/2024 15:04

I haven't been on the Popsy fb page for ages. I hot fed up of everyone fawning over a certain organ player and clamouring to be best mates with him (her?) and the popsy queen cheerleader who was always blowing kisses to the camera.
It all got silly.

I'm not overly large, but I'd look like Hattie Jacques in one of those dresses.

CremeEggsForBreakfast · 01/02/2024 16:21

I've just been to look at the trust pilot reviews and I 100% agree. I bought into the craze (still wear the dresses as I have no taste or style and think the patterns are fun) but I stopped buying when my FB page became flooded with the Frocks and Friends content.

I "peaked" when a head teacher posted under her real name and with a head shot of herself asking for advice on resources to support a trans pupil. I could easily have googled her and found the school and really, what percentage of the pupils are going to be trans? I could then have found the child, for crying out loud!
But on top of this, the group all fawned over her and recommended Mermaids. I and another group member gently suggested she should read both sides of the argument and provided some evidence-based alternatives (honestly, both comments were phrased so neutrally) and one of the loud trans-women in the group told us we were transphobic and our comments were deleted with no feedback.

I also cannot stand the over-sharing - particularly photos of children. So inappropriate.
One woman even sent her (admittedly teenage) child on a trip with a prominent trans woman member of the group before ever meeting them in person.

I am peri menopausal, so sweaty and itchy, coupled with ASD related sensory issues. I like some of the patterns and the cut, love the pockets, but I can't wear plastic clothes. It seems like such an own goal to make these dresses out of shit fabric, I can't be the only one who finds that to be a dealbreaker; if they were 100% cotton I would own several.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/02/2024 16:28

It's the same phenomenon as the one where people would lose their shit over patterned reusable nappies. It's part of their identity to be a consumer of this brand, just as it is with Hush or Toast or whatever the fuck are the other particularly successful social media driven brands are at the moment.

Coatscoatscoast · 01/02/2024 16:41

I don’t mind the plainer ones - I have a black one that’s viscose rather than polyester and it’s fine for work. They do some cotton ones as well but few and far between. What I would like is the option to filter this on the website instead of trawling through pages and clicking on each one to see what fabric it’s made of.

ZooblesSpringToLife · 01/02/2024 17:10

For anyone wondering about what's happened...

In July last year a very vulnerable member of the Popsy Facebook group alerted the admins that there was a Tattle thread discussing the brand and the group, complete with screenshots and very 'honest ' comments about the members. Popsy admin did precisely nothing. They sat back and let members overshare pics of their kids, etc in full knowledge that they were being lifted and dissected elsewhere.

The Tattle thread is still going and referenced another Facebook group where some disgruntled Popsy fans had fled. A few Tattlers mentioned they were going to join the otherr group. Popsy admin were clearly watching the Tattle thread and have moles in the other group because at the weekend they brandished their ban hammer and blocked lots of members who had joined the other group. Problem is, they blocked lots of loyal.customers who have spent literally hundreds on frocks. People who approached Popsy to ask why they had been blocked were told it's because they are trolls and bullies.

Absolute PR disaster and the upset banned have hit Trustpilot.

steff13 · 01/02/2024 17:16

I've never heard of this brand, possibly they're not sold here, but they look just like lularoe dresses.

DerekFaker · 01/02/2024 17:22

CheesyCrumpet · 11/01/2023 05:27

I've never heard of them. Are they like Lipsy etc?

Definitely not!

People get obsessed with them, for some reason. It's scary how much money Popsy fans will spend.

Their twee language as well: popsident, popover...

Weird, weird!

Bookist · 01/02/2024 17:28

They make you look like a giant toddler. Terrifying.

MirandaWest · 01/02/2024 17:30

I am a Popsy dress wearer. Probably fit an amount of the demographic mentioned although not a teacher. Have worn a pair of irregular choice shoes with one of the dresses 😃. Am in the FB group.

I feel some unease about the organ playing dress wearer and feel that a lot of people have bought into the “be nice” mindset without necessarily thinking critically about it.

Fluffywhitecloudsinthesky · 01/02/2024 17:30

I think it's funny how so many people are being nasty about the Popsy dresses, but whenever anyone asks what to wear on S and B they are always suggested midi print dresses! I don't wear midi anything or print anything, so it's not my target market, but they look absolutely fine for what they are- which is print dresses which many many women wear all the time, especially in Spring and Summer.

People can't seem to stop wearing dresses, I see why as they are an all in one outfit, no need to style upper and bottom half, and can get colour/print in them, but if you ask me are they flattering (any of them, not just Popsy, all midi print dresses) the answer for most apple shapes is no, they aren't flattering, but they are fine. Pockets seem sensible.

I am waiting for the current dress/wide-legged trousers obsessions to pass so I can get back to separates and tailored clothing, it might be a while...

I'm not sure it can even be argued that polyester is popular when there are very few alternatives in the shops, unless you're able to spend ££££

Ah well our paths are unlikely to cross so you should be safe from me 😃

SilkyMoonfaceSaucepanMan · 01/02/2024 18:19

I have no style and I don’t much care either, so I was happy to buy a couple of the dresses. I joined the FB group and left very quickly. I wanted an outfit not a weird little cult set up that mostly pandered to blokes in frocks.

I found other brands instead. Don’t get why retailers get all political. Stop it.

What other brands did you find?! Looking for some workwear 🙂
