Did anyone buy into the Popsy dress hype during covid.

There was a new dress release every Friday at 12:00. Fans of the dress would eagerly wait for noon and then there would be loads of whinging by people who didnt get lucky because the dresses had sold out instantly. Many people complained that the dress was in their checkout basket but got taken out/

The facebook page was fierce. Anyone that dared critise the quality of the fabric was instantly shut down.
Every week it was virtually the same two dress styles but in different fabrics.
I'd forgotten about it until my friend called around last night seeing if I wanted one of her old dresses.

There’s plenty on the S&B board that I wear that other people don’t like. White trainers for example. I don’t take it personally.

My phone changed s&b to d&v, which is entirely different.

Looks like I’m hitting some nerves 😄

Says the poster jumping to ‘you’re a cow and everyone hates you!’ because not everyone likes a particular style of dress.
Fuck me do you have shares in the company or something? You’re taking this weirdly personally because not everyone loves them.
Strange.

Brefugee · 11/01/2023 10:30

Biscuit for all the meanies on here.

I didn't know they did the Friday release thing. I think if a small business has A Thing and it works for them, why not? I do have 2 of their dresses, only one of which i wear regularly (don't like the neckline of one as much). It is fine. I wear it at home when i want a change from joggers, it's comfy, doesn't crease, doesn't need ironing and it has pockets. It is the dinosaur one and i love it.

I have, on occasion worn it with docs to my horribly grown-up corporate job to either no comment or "is that... dinosaurs? cool" I literally have never cared what people think of my clothing choices though, so that helps.

For a polyester dress it's surprisingly non-sweaty for me, and it hasn't pilled at all (i wash everything inside out, not sure if that helps). I'm not horribly keen on polyester from a sustainability pov, which means I'll wear the dress to death then probably make cushions out of it. Or stuff cushions or something with it when I'm done. I'll donate the other one to a charity shop.

As for how they can produce in UK at that price? they must be very easy to run up on an industrial serger. I don't know how or where they get the fabric or do the cutting, but again, easy peasy. I like that they do large sizes, and am pleased to see they can customise. Not sure i like the cutsey "talk" in their marketing, but if that's their brand and it works for them, why not? I ignore stuff like that and concentrate on the product.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 11/01/2023 10:39

I've never heard of them nor was I aware of the Facebook hype.

Maybe I've been living under a rock.

PacificallyRequested · 11/01/2023 10:40

All I know about these dresses is that the patterns are "quirky" and a trans woman I know loves them and I think has been featured in their marketing. Not a company I would want to support.

startrek90 · 11/01/2023 10:56

Never heard of this brand nor have I heard of irregular choice shoes. Had a look and I really like them. I love the wrap style dresses and they actually seem to be a decent length (I'm not comfortable wearing dresses shorter than knees length for modesty reasons). They also have a section for breastfeeding friendly clothes that are not double or triple the price of ordinary stuffed like you see in most shops. I like quirky or 'weird' patterns though. The sound of a dinosaur dress does sound awesome.....

But then again I have never been accused of being fashionable so what do I know. Thanks for putting me onto it op.

ShirleyPhallus · 11/01/2023 11:12

This thread is brilliant. So much arguing over some ugly dresses. Who cares if other people like them, if you do then wear them. If you don’t then don’t.

NoNewsIsGoodNews · 11/01/2023 11:12

As a general rule of thumb, I tend to avoid anything with a self-description of ‘quirky’. Whether that’s clothes or people.

GimmeSleep · 11/01/2023 11:13

I have a few of them, I've found they bobble really easily which is a shame as it makes them look old very quickly.

I would say it’s fairly unusual to buy specific clothes for a ‘Disneyworld’ holiday that you say you won’t wear anywhere else.

And yes indeed, you can of course buy what you like. And if you mention it here, others can comment on it.

I didn’t say anyone couldn’t comment on it? I merely replied to the comment that I thought it was quite common to buy clothes for holiday. Also FYI it is definitely not unusual to buy specific clothes for a Disney holiday. Lots of people there seem to be wearing outfits or accessories that I doubt they would wear elsewhere. One of my dresses has carousels on it another has giraffes all over it, and no I wouldn’t wear a carousel or giraffe dress anywhere else. I also have a collection of “ears” I wouldn’t wear them anywhere else either.

What's wrong with white trainers?! I live in my white trainers!

Ah ok. I just can’t imagine doing this as an adult. Fair enough if this is a ‘thing’.

Seaography · 11/01/2023 11:31

Not really heard of Popsy before. While not my style my daughter loves a print dress and also loves us dressing alike. She would be thrilled if we had matching print dresses! She will be embarrassed to be seen with me in a few years so I may as well embrace it!

Going to have a proper look later. If anyone can recommend any other sites where I could find similar outfits it would be great.

I may have to copy you.

HangoverSquare · 11/01/2023 11:52

Silly to take offence because someone doesn't like the same brand of dresses as you. I love a bit of leopard print. Lots of people would rather walk down the street starkers than wear it. And that's a-ok with me.

Yep. Agree that people wouldn’t like some of my choices and that’s fine. Hey in my 40s I went through a legwarmer phase (to keep my legs warm). It didn’t catch on.

JusteanBiscuits · 11/01/2023 11:55

They are NOT made in the UK btw. They are 'designed' in the UK, but made and shipped from China.

I did buy one as I am a fan in more interesting prints. But the fabric was shite and bobbled quickly. And while they may go up to a size 24, their designs are not flattering for those sizes.

Springtoautumn · 11/01/2023 10:21

This is a really mean thread. Seems like an ethical family business to me. I’d rather buy from them than the likes of Boohoo.

As I said in my previous comment, very unlikely to be ethical at that price and with weekly drops! There’s no way anyone making the dresses is being paid a living wage at £30/dress. Taking into consideration profit, fabric costs, etc. And there’s nothing ethical about fast fashion.

Nothing! It’s a bit of a ‘mum’ uniform I think and some people don’t like them. I love mine, and don’t really care. Grin

MistyRock · 11/01/2023 12:38

I don't really like Popsy clothes, but I can certainly see the appeal. I actually really like Joanie clothing. Also an acquired taste I'd imagine.

ForfuckssakeEXHstopbeingatwat · 11/01/2023 12:46

@Seaography look at Rainbows and Sprinkles for sportswear..they do matching kids and adults sizes also in "quirky" prints.

RicStar · 11/01/2023 13:20

They are made - as in sewn in the UK, I am sure fabric comes from elsewhere but its cleared they are manufactured in the UK on their about us page

EuphemiaLives · 11/01/2023 13:59

How ethical they are is up for debate. They ran a competition a while back and seemed to 'borrow ' a print design created by one the FB group members and claim it as their own without any credit to her. It was hushed up very quickly.

The oversized hoodies are made in China, something they were very coy about.

As you can see, I'm definitely not Cherish!

VenusClapTrap · 11/01/2023 14:50

Interesting! This all sounded vaguely familiar so I googled these dresses and it reminded me that a FB friend had got into this during lockdown. Lots of posts about being excited for dresses to arrive, and photos of herself wearing brightly coloured print dresses. I thought it was just her, hadn’t realised it was a ‘thing’.

She is a bit of a sucker for this sort of marketing. I’ve noticed her posting about limited edition teddy bears and fairy ornaments and stuff like that. Sending public messages to the FB groups about how much she’d love them.

But you know what? Her life is a bit crap, largely through bad luck rather than bad choices, her mental health is poor, so if treating herself to some cheap and cheerful dresses with brightly coloured dogs on cheers her up then that’s great. People get into far worse stuff.

And you know what, the dresses suited her. She looked good in them. I’d rather see photos of her smiling in a quirky dress than the motivational memes she has a tendancy to spam FB with!

MistyRock · 11/01/2023 15:16

@VenusClapTrap what a lovely post. So long as they make people happy nothing else matters.
