Did anyone buy into the Popsy dress hype during covid.

There was a new dress release every Friday at 12:00. Fans of the dress would eagerly wait for noon and then there would be loads of whinging by people who didnt get lucky because the dresses had sold out instantly. Many people complained that the dress was in their checkout basket but got taken out/

The facebook page was fierce. Anyone that dared critise the quality of the fabric was instantly shut down.
Every week it was virtually the same two dress styles but in different fabrics.
I'd forgotten about it until my friend called around last night seeing if I wanted one of her old dresses.

I have never heard of this! I was still working in lockdown though so was busy enough. Looking on their Facebook page it looks like they are happy to alter the dresses if you have a special reason why (fitting a medical device in pocket for example) which is wonderful. Some aren't my taste but the idea of them altering them to fit me better does have me tempted

NoNewsIsGoodNews · 11/01/2023 09:03

I don’t like these dresses at all but no polyester hate here. It keeps me warm in the winter and needs less ironing than cotton. I don’t really sweat though.

CheesyCrumpet · 11/01/2023 09:04

I've just had a quick look and decided that I don't want to dress like my grandma yet.

FeedMeSantiago · 11/01/2023 09:08

Oh I quite like my Popsy dresses. I have a few of the floral prints for work and get lots of compliments. They're comfortable to wear (I have various medical issues and find the dresses easy to wear, no fiddly zips or buttons and soft fabric). The company also offer free alterations for medical stuff too e.g. diabetes pumps and stoma bags which is nice for those who need them. I also like that they have customer models.

I don't find the polyester sweaty but I'm not a sweaty person in general - I'm permanently cold. Some of the prints aren't for me but lots of the simpler prints and floral prints are nice IMO.

Purpleavocado · 11/01/2023 09:11

I want a bit lockdown crazy with them, but don't find myself reaching for them anymore and am planning to sell them on the selling Facebook group, where they go for very good prices.

LadyKenya · 11/01/2023 09:13

I had a peek at their website. Some of the dresses are quite nice. I see no need to be rude about the ones that do not appeal to me.👗

Fcuk38 · 11/01/2023 09:14

It’s the business ethics for me….. launching dresses every week and creating the hype is not good for the environment. There are people on there that but every week, they can’t possibly get the wear out of those dresses. They prey on womens insecurities about their weight although do the opposite and say it’s all about body positivity. Vanity sizing is used, I could fit into a size 10- I’ve never been a size 10. People in the Facebook group big each other up even when a dress is obviously not suiting the poster.!

I don’t understand why people would buy more than 3 dresses - they produce the same dresses again and again - same style(s) different print. Quality isn’t great either, mine bobbled after 1’wear and wash. But I’m meant to be excited about purchasing a debobbler because it’s really satisfying!

Lentilweaver · 11/01/2023 08:51

Don't you all find the 100% polyester sweaty and itchy?

I've never found this the case at all.

HRTQueen · 11/01/2023 09:21

They look a little like Boden dresses adult children’s clothes not keen on the look myself but for a teacher they seem suitable and practical

Yes! I was going to comment on the environmental thing too. Buying a £40 dress every week seems insane to me. How many dresses does a person need? If they're being released every Friday at twelve and selling out within minutes it suggests people aren't putting a massive amount of consideration into their purchase, so a lot of them must go unworn or barely worn. The consumerism and waste in our society is out of control.

RustySprings · 11/01/2023 09:33

Never heard of them. Had a google - quite liked the look of them. No sweaty issues (or snobbery) about polyester here. Agree creating hype over when a new one is going to drop is a bit suspect, but it’s just typical marketing practice. Each to their own :-)

shinynewapple22 · 11/01/2023 09:35

I have never heard of the hype around new styles being released on a Friday. Also I thought that during lockdown most people were only buying joggers and sweatshirts.

I've heard of Popsy dresses as someone always recommends them in any 'what shall I wear' thread on S&B. Didn't realise they were made in the UK - that would probably make them worth a second look .

Lentilweaver · 11/01/2023 09:38

I can see the appeal of wearing bright colours in miserable January; I wear a lot of colour myself. But am getting a slight Snag tights feel for some reason.

The group is bonkers. This didn't happen, did it?

I can very much see it happening! Some parents raise their kids to behave just like this Hmm

Never heard of them but just looked at Popsy dress on google images and a load of hideous, cheap looking, dreadfully patterned, frumpy dresses appeared.

Well thanks a lot for making me feel like shit and ruining my body positivity - of which I got tonnes from my Popsy dresses. Thanks so very much Biscuit

I'm not on Facebook, so can't access that link. What have I missed?

Also, what does the material of the dresses feel like?

barelyfunctional · 11/01/2023 09:48

Synthetic fabrics are a sensory nightmare for me. I don’t dislike the style of the dresses but I’d say the company have questionable ethics. The weekly releases are encouraging waste and fast fashion, and the price means that they can’t possibly be paying a living wage to the people who make them, I’m surprised that something claiming to be made in the UK can be sold so cheaply.

I think some people are jealous they can't pull them off so don't worry about it.

SomethingOriginal2 · 11/01/2023 09:50

I like the patterns actually, just out of my price range and I don't really wear dresses. But they're nice, I'd compliment someone wearing one.

I've just had a look - there's 243 dresses!

How can they possibly be sewn in the UK when they're about £30 each Confused

Absolutely. Something doesn't add up Confused

Don't concern yourself with the opinion of someone who makes the effort to post nasty things the internet for the sole purpose of making strangers feel bad.

ProhibitedSteps · 11/01/2023 09:55

@Somethingsnappy It was someone on the Popsy group talking about how their small child met another small child who asked why she was wearing dungarees as they're for babies Confused So in true MN fashion, PP decided it "didn't happen" ConfusedConfusedConfused^^

AnotherNameChangeYes · 11/01/2023 09:56

They not my cup of tea at all, too shiny and polyester. But what I find weird is referring to the dresses as she/her.

‘I can’t wait to wear her’. For example. It’s a dress. Hmm

ProhibitedSteps · 11/01/2023 09:57

@Somethingsnappy He material is very soft. Doesn't feel plasticky but if you're a hot person like me - stick to short sleeves as it's mostly polyester so will make you even hotter! If trying Popsy dresses for the first time and you're a bigger woman like me, I'd avoid the 'Trapeze' style dresses. The v necks with gathered waist are the nicest
