Did anyone buy into the Popsy dress hype during covid.

There was a new dress release every Friday at 12:00. Fans of the dress would eagerly wait for noon and then there would be loads of whinging by people who didnt get lucky because the dresses had sold out instantly. Many people complained that the dress was in their checkout basket but got taken out/

The facebook page was fierce. Anyone that dared critise the quality of the fabric was instantly shut down.
Every week it was virtually the same two dress styles but in different fabrics.
I'd forgotten about it until my friend called around last night seeing if I wanted one of her old dresses.

And yes I am really sweaty, I can't drive so have to walk everywhere. From experience a polyester dress or top gives me stinky pits before I get to work.

Everyone's different - of course if you are prone to sweat, it's not for you, what I dislike are people implying it's true for everyone e.g. the PP with "polyester makes you sweat". It doesn't me as I run cold, I actually quite like it so that I can look summery in the summer without freezing!

I have quite a few but never bought into the hype. (Not limited to Lockdown. Still happens every week and particularly around special releases eg Christmas/Halloween)

I'm going off them a bit now as the FB group is slowly gaining more and more trans women who have people fawning all over them and telling them how beautiful they are and how jealous they are of their legs.

The TW thing is what I've noticed too and its not appealing.
Women rushing to fawn over men is not my thing.

Coffeecreme · 11/01/2023 08:09

ok @Susanthehappytrottingelf
polyester makes me sweat, not you, and it does make other people sweat.
but it still shrinks in the wash,

MyLordWizardKing · 11/01/2023 08:09

I've just started buying Popsy dresses, and I wear them for my job (which is not teaching!). I like the variety of prints, and the wrap style really suits my body shape. I'm very impatient when it comes to buying clothes and not really interested in fashion trends; the fact that they only do about three styles in loads of different prints is right up my street!

I'd much rather read people getting overexcited about new dresses in a Facebook group than anonymous posters being pointlessly nasty about other people's clothing choices on Mumsnet.

InsomniacVampire · 11/01/2023 08:17

They are my cup of tea in terms of patterns, but to pay these prices for polyester that bobbles (I saw a few second ones on ebay, and a few mentioned 'material bobbled as expected from the brand' which I found very offputting)- but will look out for a well priced second hand ones.

TreeMate · 11/01/2023 08:18

I’ve never heard of them, but the release date madness is a common social media ploy for fashion brands these days. I think what’s unusual here is their buyer demographic (presumably women over 35?).

My teen DD buys clothes from various companies with these hyped up ‘drop dates’ and the quick selling out of products. They’re always ‘made in Britain’ too.

BigFatLiar · 11/01/2023 08:27

Can't say I've heard of them. Had a quick look and they're OK, not everybody's cup of tea. I'd probably wear them like the pockets, pockets should be standard on dresses and skirts unless the fur doesn't suit.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 11/01/2023 08:35

I like some of the styles and designs- but not in polyester. If they were cotton I might look into it.

underneaththeash · 11/01/2023 08:36

Never heard of it....I've just googled and they look quite unflattering on the model - which demographic are they meant to suit? They're quite Boden from about 10 years ago.

Surely, if they're polyester you just zap everyone when you touch them!

NoNewsIsGoodNews · 11/01/2023 07:30

Why would you buy dresses just for a Disney holiday? Feels so wasteful!

Why not? Most people buy new clothes for their holidays.

MistyRock · 11/01/2023 08:41

Polyester doesn't shrink in the wash. It's known to be an easy fabric. It doesn't shrink, It doesn't stretch and I doesn't need ironing.

MistyRock · 11/01/2023 08:38

Do they?! How unnecessary.

MistyRock · 11/01/2023 08:48

I course they do. I do, then I either wear them at home or save them for the next holiday. Why is that so strange?

hoppityscotch · 11/01/2023 08:48

Nsenene · 11/01/2023 08:42

Do they?! How unnecessary.

Not really. If you live in joggers and sweatshirts that's not going to be any use when you go away somewhere warm is it.

Suziesz · 11/01/2023 08:48

To me the come across like scene-teenager-hits-middle age.
Not my cup of tea.
Weird to buy a dress every week as well but then again lockdown was a weird time so.

Lentilweaver · 11/01/2023 08:51

Don't you all find the 100% polyester sweaty and itchy?

MyLordWizardKing · 11/01/2023 08:52

I've only ever seen polyester slandered on Mumsnet (and possibly Frasier). The dresses are soft, comfortable, stretchy and don't need ironing; I will admit that one is bobbling very slightly but it's not noticeable. I've also never zapped anyone while wearing it. 😁 They're not the £5 shiny staticky things you buy on a market stall for clubbing!

DappledThings · 11/01/2023 08:53

Never heard of them before. Had a look. Some of them look quite nice.

Ninjapot · 11/01/2023 08:53

One of my friends buys from Popsy and she looks very nice in the dresses. Why make a thread just to run the company down? They are quite cheap, but cheerful and made in the UK. My mate did say that she was getting put off by the trans fawning on the FB group though. She left it and just shops on the website.

notacooldad · 11/01/2023 08:57

I didnt.
Everyone else has done that.

I will buy clothes for my holiday if I like, I didn’t realise this was an unusual thing to do. Confused

I would say it’s fairly unusual to buy specific clothes for a ‘Disneyworld’ holiday that you say you won’t wear anywhere else.

And yes indeed, you can of course buy what you like. And if you mention it here, others can comment on it.

MyLordWizardKing · 11/01/2023 08:58

I haven't found the dresses sweaty or itchy, though to be fair I've yet to wear them in the summer.

I haven't noticed any 'trans fawning' in the group, unless that just means 'telling a trans woman she looks nice in a dress'.

IhearyouClemFandango · 11/01/2023 09:01

I have one from about 5 years ago, but wasn't a massive fan of the fabric. But I used to get caught up in the Maxomorra/baby wrap sling craziness so cannot comment.

DisforDarkChocolate · 11/01/2023 09:01

I never heard of this but I do have a couple of their dresses. Both are fine for everyday wear but not smart enough for work or a bit of a do.
