I feel terrible, I’m coughing so hard that I’m weeing, I feel like my head is going to explode and it’s making me retch! Is there anything that works to calm it down?! I’m at my wits end

Same here, feeling dreadful - have been for over four weeks now. Sick of it.

This exactly :(

Wombatbum · 12/12/2022 21:37

How’s everyone now? I felt practically Spritely this morning but I fear I’ve overdone it as had some kind of weird panic attack in aldi 🙄 couldn’t get my breath properly then was panicking because I couldn’t remember everything I wanted 🙄 I think I’m broken!

I’m on week 7. I’ve vomited from the coughing several times and now have sprained ribs. I’ve been given 2 lots of antibiotics and 2 lot of steroids and they haven’t made any difference. I now have 2 prescriptions for strong painkillers and I still howl when I cough, it’s so painful. I just want to feel better.

Virtual hugs to all those suffering.

ToWhitToWhoo · 12/12/2022 21:50

Among the people I know, it's more like has anyone NOT got this awful cough. Hope you're better soon!

dementedma · 12/12/2022 21:52

Had it for two months. Had antibiotics and steroids. Still coughing up phlegm

Youwhatnowffs · 12/12/2022 21:56

Have to say many of these experiences sound remarkably similar to when I had whooping cough (as an adult, and yes I had my childhood immunisations - there are new strains now….). To be fair there’s not much they can do anyway (unless caught very early) but sometimes worth knowing/considering (particularly if you or anyone else you see regularly is pregnant). Hope everyone feels better soon!!!

PurpleSproutingSomething · 12/12/2022 22:05

Everything from the hair on my head to my feet hurts. My back and ribs especially.
Done several covid tests and all negative.
Everything hurts.

amusedbush · 12/12/2022 22:39

DH has given something to me, which I assumed was a garden variety chest infection but sounds like it could be what you all have. We have both done covid tests and they're negative (neither of us have had it yet - to our knowledge) but my lungs are so sore already. I feel queasy, I've had a very upset stomach all day and, as someone with POTS, I'm even more dizzy, breathless and tired than usual.

I'm hypermobile too so coughing fits invariably end in rib - or worse, jaw - subluxations, which I just can't face right now. My joints subluxate a lot at the best of times but it just adds insult to injury when I'm already ill Xmas Sad

saltinesandcoffeecups · 12/12/2022 23:08

Had something similar… but mine was a sinus cough. I would have traded my soul for a good phlegmy productive cough. Almost 3 weeks of it. My lungs hurt from trying to hork the snot that was draining down the back of my throat. Every time I thought I was on the upswing I’d get knocked back again.

Hopefully , everyone is on the mend.

Just adding my tale of coughing woe here.

Picked something up from DC last week when I already had a lingering cough and it's gone into overdrive!

I developed a booming cough over a few hours and couldn't actually talk in full sentences so got sent home from work. I had to pull over and vomit on the way home because I was coughing so hard. I spent the rest of day barely able to move, constantly falling asleep and very, very nauseous. I went to bed feeling like I was burning up but by morning felt lots better aside from the cough and aching chest.

Now the cough has changed and it's a very low, wheezy sound. I feel like I can't breathe until I stop and then I'm retching. I also feel like I have a ball of discomfort in the middle of my chest constantly. After I've been coughing it burns but then settles back to aching again.

I've never had a cough like this before and it's not COVID either. I feel ok in myself and I'm not generally a worrier but I'm umming and aahing over ringing the GP when appointments are at such a premium.

SeveruslyFrazzled · 13/12/2022 00:02

Mine seems to have “come up” it was so deep in my chest that I couldn’t shift anything. Now my face is all congested. So much snot that I didn’t have before. Still wheezing. Thankfully not weeing myself as much! I call that progress 😆

@Newlyseparated2022 the only thing that helped mine was antibiotics. It was bloody awful and this is now going on past two weeks. They tried steriods. Inhaler. Nebuliser. Nothing really touched it.

colouringindoors · 13/12/2022 11:03

Another vote for antibiotics (which I usually try to avoid). Was ill for 3.5 weeks. 3 days into 7 day course and cough is definitely improved. Horrible bugs this winter!

BrewandBiscuit · 13/12/2022 11:13

I’m still suffering at 2 weeks. I’ve had to defer my exams at Uni this week which I’m gutted about but I just don’t have it in me at all. I can barely keep myself functioning in and all my tiny amount of energy is put into my child. Roll on a day I feel better!

Rowthe · 13/12/2022 11:18

I'm much better now.

Had about 3 nights where it was really bad and didnt get much sleep. Also lost my smell for a couple of days. Then started improving over the last few days. Days are fine. Still a slight cough over night.

I didbt do anything special.

But do take regular vit d. Also used some steroid inhaler for a few days. And some throat lozenges which eased the thickly cough for about 5 minutes.

Rowthe · 13/12/2022 11:19

But sleep still bad cos one of the kids has restarted with a cough and temp again...

soundsofthesixties · 13/12/2022 11:26

Glad that I found this, I was started to be seriously worried about my cough. It's waking me up all through the night, I sound like a barking seal. I've coughed so much my chest and stomach muscles are hurting. Mine only started on Saturday, it sounds as though it goes on for weeks.

Greengagesnfennel · 13/12/2022 11:34

Me n DH both in bed with it. Covid tests coming up negative but the cough is so bad I am really surprised it's not that.

Just came down with it. Feeling bleak at the thought this could last weeks. 😰

Luluissleeping · 13/12/2022 11:38

We have it. Son has it for 3 weeks. Doctor sent a questionnaire about it. Not heard back.

colouringindoors · 13/12/2022 12:03

What helps (from bitter experience)
Loads of:
Rest
Fluids (for me warm drinks calm throat/cough better so v dilute sqyash with tsp honey in / camomile tea with tsp honey)
Vit C with zinc
Vit D
Codeine at night to suppress cough and aid sleep.
Amoxicillin. I ended up paying from private gp appt...

Sartre · 13/12/2022 12:23

Yep, I’ve had one on and off for two months now due to three separate viruses. I’d clear it then catch another virus soon after. Had the current cough for 2.5 weeks, gets worse when I exercise which is daily because I like to keep fit. Also having fits during the night which isn’t cool, disrupting my sleep majorly. I’ve pulled muscles in my chest and neck coughing.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 15/12/2022 13:42

I did a search on 'tickly cough' hoping to find some elusive remedy! and it brought me to this thread. I'm well into week 2 of it now and it's really getting me down. It started with chills & pains all over then I completely lost my voice although at that stage I had no sore throat or cough! Then as my voice returned my throat got sore and the cough started 🙄 I don't feel that it's in my chest, it's just a very annoying constant tickly cough that every hour turns into a massive coughing fit that just does not stop no matter what I do! I could cough for 20 minutes non stop, tears pouring down my face etc and then it ends. Nothing seems to help. Doc says it's a rampant virus so no antibiotics.

Can I just ask, some of you have mentioned co-codomol what products is that in? I have soluble solpadeine these have codine in them is that the same thing? I'm desperate to get some relief from the constant coughing, as well as it being so embarrassing if others are around, my stomach/sides are aching from it.

colouringindoors · 15/12/2022 15:15

Yes @LifeInAHamsterWheel yes if your Solpadeine has codeine in (Boots own doesn't) then its worth taking some at night at least to calm the cough down
Check it's not a version with caffeine in though. I also find hot camomile tea with tsp honey in helpful.

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2022 15:17

It’s weird I’ve had it long enough for dh to suggest I see Dr

I’m fine otherwise and don’t really think about it but interesting to hear others are the same

Sounds very similar to me. My covid cough was a breeze compared. I've had no other major symptoms besides this. Have ordered a flu rapid flow test to confirm, as a family I was recently in contact with through work who've been sick confirmed that they tested positive for flu.

My GP offers a phone call appointment and I made one today. Explained my concerns and the contact I had with flu. I've been prescribed antibiotics which, while they won't do much if it's flu, will protect against further infection like pneumonia.

Don't feel bad about ringing them! Better then getting worse and spending Christmas in A&E

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 16/12/2022 09:39

Thanks @colouringindoors the solpadeine definitely helped, just don't want to get addicted to it now!
