Being good at speeches is a trait shared by some very dubious human beings

Yes. We can all think of a certain Austrian man from the 1920s/30s who was a fabulous orator!

CeriB82 · 29/11/2022 20:17

You think its bad?

not worse than hearing “its coming home”

Jesus. Godwin's law on a thread about Michael Sheen. That truly takes some twisted reasoning.

LindorDoubleChoc · 29/11/2022 20:25

Aww. I deliberately didn't name him. I just think pp had a valid point.

ClaudineClare · 29/11/2022 20:32

Well I suppose you have a point. Lots of dubious people are or were good orators. Look at Churchill.

BeanCounterBabe · 29/11/2022 20:34

I’m totally in to quirky, angry, clever and funny Welshmen (I married one) but Micheal Sheen gives me the ick. The age gap relationship definitely contributes to that. He’s my type and I like the characters he plays but there is something about him that makes me feel uncomfortable.

FlyingPandas · 29/11/2022 20:45

I love Michael Sheen but sometimes feel he's consciously turned himself into a bit of a Welsh national treasure (am half Welsh so feel qualified to criticise!) and the impassioned speeches kind of go along with that.

He is hugely talented and always comes across as a lovely, kind, decent bloke but yes the 25-year-age-gap relationship is just such a cliche and I thought he was better than that. Especially as the story goes that she was a student who attended a workshop type thing he did at her NY drama school and he got together with her afterwards, she was pregnant within weeks. It's that whole much-older-teacher-and-pupil thing that makes it feel a bit ick.

I mean of course she was a consenting adult - and they've had a second baby this year so clearly intending to make a go of things - but still such a bloody cliche all the same.

Whitwhit · 29/11/2022 20:49

I like him, but he and his speeches can do one!
@sweatyannie YANBU!

ClaudineClare · 29/11/2022 20:59

Well the motivational speeches didn't help us tonight😭

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 29/11/2022 21:00

Not Welsh.

Michael Sheen is a his and his speeches are amazing

balalake · 29/11/2022 21:18

Like his speeches, but hearing Daffyd Iwan and his beautiful song is ten times better.

sweatyannie · 29/11/2022 21:20

Well at least we won't be hearing any more motivational speeches for Wales football !

I admire Michael Sheen for the work he does in the local area - he personally funds some students through drama school (no grants/loans available) so that they can have the same chance as he does (I think 2 other Welsh hollywood stars do the same thing

Also he staged the Passion out of doors in his local town and sponsored/judged a creative writing prize. Probably other things that I am not aware of.

Still find it amazing that Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins and Sheen all come from the same small area in S Wales

balalake · 30/11/2022 07:20

I saw him on stage a couple of years ago in a production of Under Milk Wood. Sadly the production was not a patch on the Guy Masterson solo version or the one with Richard Burton/Elizabeth Taylor.

It’s Dafydd, not Daffyd. Just saying.

CeriB82 · 30/11/2022 20:11

no such thing as balalake @balalake its Llyn Tegid.

so with your ignorance i can see why you said Daffyd.

Gwenhwyfar · 30/11/2022 20:39

"Jesus. Godwin's law on a thread about Michael Sheen. That truly takes some twisted reasoning."

Welsh people being proud really, really triggers some English people.

Gwenhwyfar · 30/11/2022 20:42

"Probably other things that I am not aware of."

Homeless football match. Paying to protect the local Banksy.

LindorDoubleChoc · 30/11/2022 21:11

I am not triggered by Welsh people being proud. Most of my family is Welsh. I just think that Michael Sheen speech is ott.

You compared him to Hitler! You're well and truly triggered.

justasking111 · 01/12/2022 21:20

Proud Welsh here we just thinking him a bit eccentric and out of date

Gwenhwyfar · 01/12/2022 21:25

Why out of date?

Lycanthropology · 02/12/2022 12:22

Gwenhwyfar · 01/12/2022 21:25

Why out of date?

I wondered this, too. He's busy working and still garnering acclaim. How is that out of date?

Is it perhaps because he's over 50, so should shut up, go away and put his slippers on, @justasking111 ?

As much as I like Guy Masterson who is related to Richard Burton BTW he is King of the Hams and rolling eyes and spit freckled performances. You should look up his performances on doing a Burton impression using a vase !

Michael Sheen is playing a barrister in the forthcoming Vardy v Rooney dramatisation on C4. Looking forward to it. Bet he doesn't mention Wales.
