William as the proper Prince of Wales

How dare you!

Prince William v. Michael Sheen, I wonder who would win?

I think William would win if it were pistols or swords, but Michael would definitely win with fisticuffs.

Fisticuffs. What a lovely word.

Theluggage15 · 29/11/2022 15:56

Ugh, he makes my skin crawl. What an old ham. And the marriage to someone so young - yuck.

LindorDoubleChoc · 29/11/2022 16:02

"What an old ham" thank you! that's the phrase I was looking for.

Hammy performance an actor or acting that is unnatural and uses too much emotion.

I'm conflicted.

He is a great orator. The speech that went viral recently, the one he made on some panel show hosted by Richard Ayoade, did he make that up on the spot?

But then on the other hand I did roll my eyes when he married a woman only 5 years older than his 20 year old daughter and thought 'you big old cliché'.

This.

He is a wonderful speaker and appears lovely on the face of it but marrying a women so much younger is disappointing. Had hoped he had more emotional intelligence than that.

The anti English sentiment from some Welsh people makes me very uncomfortable too.

Dahlietta · 29/11/2022 16:20

I love Wales, but I think he comes across as a bit of a loon. How long has he been doing this for? It feels like a new hobby for him, but maybe that's just because I haven't been on Twitter that long.

PandoraRocks · 29/11/2022 16:23

I saw him on the beach at Aberavon last Summer and I saw him in my local Tesco during lockdown😄. He has a house a few miles from my town.
He was at the beach with his elderly parents, wife and baby.

As a Welshie myself, I always thought he was a great actor (Kenneth Williams play) and has done lots for Wales. BUT I was so disappointed to see he has gone down the stereotypical scenario of the middle aged man and young woman. Lost some respect for him there and it gives me the ick.

The World Cup has got nothing to do with friendship, or "bringing the world together."

Another one who doesn't understand what a competition is. The teams are there to win not hold hands and sing kumbayah.

Err...I know. I know it's a competition. Me not stoopid. My point is, people keep banging on about the World Cup as if it's some kind of blow for world peace. If I hear one more person say "it brings the world together," I'm going to scream. Yeah, it brings the world together, but only in a spirit of nationalism and anger and hatred. The hysteria has got nothing to do with football. Few people could get so hysterical about such a boring game. They get hysterical because their national pride is on the line. And people stoke those nationalist fires in order to make money – lots and lots of money.

What has that got to do with discussing Michael Sheen?

Maybe I will pop along to every thread about English celebs and remark that the anti-Welsh sentiment from some English people makes me uncomfortable.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/11/2022 16:45

"What has that got to do with discussing Michael Sheen?"

Presumably because he's questioned William's role as prince of Wales and English dominance over Wales. If we're not tugging the forelock, we're "anti-English".

AttilaTheUOkHun · 29/11/2022 16:49

Fair enough, but I've just never heard anyone say that. Was it limp lettuce Linneker?

He's not married, for those of you hand wringing. He never has been. Plus she's an adult with a brain of her own so. Take ye wittering elsewhere. Good for her I say, lock down that cash with kids and when you're finished with him send him over this way.

If you mean she should lock down his cash, she needs to get wed!

newnamethanks · 29/11/2022 18:19

No I'm not. He's one of the few good people in the world. Lay off.

YANBU OP

How would others like it if an actor started going on about all things English?

ChrisTrepidation · 29/11/2022 18:37

YABU

Michael Sheen is an absolute God. I adore him.

I'm not Welsh BTW.

He is great at speeches.

YANBU if he is coming to your house and shouting the speeches through your letterbox.

He’s married to a 25 year old yuk!!

I don't think they're married but yes, very yuk.

I know you can just happen to fall in love with someone of any age, but when it comes to 'stars', it tends to be with women easily young enough to be their daughter.

newnamethanks · 29/11/2022 19:21

Thehorse like Laurence Fox? Now there's something to properly complain about. Silly creature.

Yes. Funny that. I don't know what puts him in a special slot rather than a little bit off.

Krabapple · 29/11/2022 19:28

Yabu - I could listen to him make a speech about anything!

YANBU OP

Well, depends what you mean by 'all things english.' I think it would be quite nice if an english actor spoke enthusiastically about, say, scones, cricket, shakespeare, the beauty of the lake district or whatever. In fact doesn't Stephen Fry get paid quite a lot to appear on TV and basically do that?

If, however, they decided to chat about how much they love colonialism, imperialism, and strict class boundaries, I'd find that a bit concerning, and if they started ranting about the time the Welsh government authorised beating english children who dared to speak English, in England, or the time authorities flooded a village in the west midlands to build a reservoir to provide water for Cardiff, then I'd be a bit confused as, as far as I know, those things never happened?

Devoutspoken · 29/11/2022 19:33

Being good at speeches is a trait shared by some very dubious human beings
