To think 3 days compassionate leave is appalling

3 days appears to be standard in most professions (definitely case in education). Common practice is to go to GP and get ‘signed off’ with stress to extend compassionate leave.

I understand many are saying sick leave is more appropriate but that simply just doesn't cover the cost of living right now. It's not a financial option. I just think at least 5 working days would give her time to get her head around it all

I’ve blundered in a bit here. Sick leave and compassionate leave both have entitlement of full pay. Up to a week after which a doctors note required as sick leave . This should be acceptable as a mental health issue with doctor. It can be kept going for a matter of months. Compassionate leave is a bit more discretionary regarding employer’s responsibility so going sick is best option and is completely valid in the circumstances.

Sorry I hadn’t fully understood. I’m appalled that SSP doesn’t have a later point to kick in. I was really sure that full pay up to a week is legal entitlement and continues if supported by a doctors note. I am working with someone in this situation they’ve taken 3 months so far. Is there a union that can be brought into it. Sorry such a sad and shocking situation.

Lots of companies only have SSP, and a doctor’s note makes no difference. There’s no full pay ever on offer if you are off sick. It’s quite common, sadly.

I am actually shocked that people do not realise statutory pay only is incredibly common.
This is why people went into work with covid when they no longer legally had to stay off work. I have worked in places where people phone in really ill and ask to take annual leave as they need the money.

And unions make no difference unless it is supporting people to strike to get sick pay.

It is ridiculous. Attitudes in offices to time off do seem to be slightly archaic. It's like when a company advertises you get an extra day holiday when you have done 2 years service lol. Wow so generous.

I got two days when my mum died, after several months of caring for her and a very distressing time. And also hassled as to when I would be going back. There was no one but me to deal with any arrangements etc which also made it harder even just in terms of logistics, never mind anything else.

My husband got 1 day off from the factory he works at. That was the day of his mum's funeral - and he only got paid for half the day.

My husbands last employer ( before his retirement ) didn't allow bereavement days and even for a parent or other close relative you needed to use AL day for the funeral . Non paid days off were frowned upon and actively discouraged .
