To rehome cat because of pressure on marriage

I’ve posted about this before but I didn’t get many serious replies.

I have been married for nearly a year, and just after our wedding I adopted a cat from a charity. I did talk about this with DH first, there was some eye rolling and ‘if you must’ but it was good humoured.

Nearly a year on and it’s really difficult. The cat had fleas which bit DH, he was pretty annoyed about this. He really doesn’t like the cat, I mean, I knew he wasn’t really into animals but I misread dislike as actual neutrality.

The complaining about the cat is really getting to me, I feel like he’d be happier without the cat and me, tbh.

I am not sure what to do now.

Just to give a balanced opinion on the now totally derailed thread... 😂

I foster cats so feel I have some small experience on this matter, so here are a few random cat-smell facts:
Cats that have lived on the streets, poorly cats and entire tomcats smell. Healthy, cared for cats don't smell. (Unless they have just had mackerel fillets and then come and sit on you and lick you. Then you end up smelling pretty bad).
Poo of all species smells. Usually dependant on what the defecator has recently eaten. So you can't really use that as a reason to hate them unless you hate dogs, babies (especially babies who poo any and everywhere!) and people in general for the same reason. In which case fair enough, I can't argue with that one.

Cats are like Marmite. I personally could live off Marmite but accept that others can't bear it. I don't understand, but I do accept! ;) 🙀😹

@DumbleDorey I’m not trolling you. I’m telling you something you don’t want to hear about your nuisance animals.

You are free to stop replying whenever you wish.

You are trolling, you are calling my cats shit, nuisance and saying they smell, that is trolling, you are trying to cause offence.
I am happy to hear that they smell if they did but they don’t and you find it extremely hard to accept that my cats don’t smell and are making up your own narrative to suit your dislike of cats. Now, you don’t have to LIKE cats but you don’t have the right to tell people their cats smell and try and use different tactics to try and push your agenda onto people and while you’re at it stop with the superior attitude.

YellowTreeHouse · 29/11/2022 09:34

@DumbleDorey No, I’m still not trolling. Cats are a a nuisance and they do smell. You don’t have to like hearing that but I’m not going to stop saying it.

If it’s causing you such an issue why don’t you stop replying instead of telling me to shut up/going away/stop?

Yes you are. You clearly dislike cats and have nothing constructive to add to this thread but instead have used your (dislike of cats) to spread your agenda. That’s trolling at its finest. If you don’t like cats, why didn’t you just scroll on, instead of making a completely pointless post about your hate towards cats and then try and convince a cat owner they’re nose blind because they own cats and believing your own narrative. This clearly says a lot about you.

A troll is Internet slang for a person who intentionally tries to instigate conflict, hostility, or arguments in an online social community.

Well I have got nothing to lose by continuing.

Why are cats a nuisance?

YellowTreeHouse · 29/11/2022 11:50

@DumbleDorey Oh yes, I hate cats. I won’t make a secret of that.

They’re a blight on society, shitting everywhere. Their owners don’t care and think everyone should put up with their dirty nuisance animals. Equally though, the cats don’t care about their owners either.

They don’t love you. They don’t have any feelings towards you. They stick around because they’re greedy and you feed them but if they find a better off they’ll happily trade you in.

But quite clearly you’re a crazy cat lady so it falls on deaf ears.

SleeplessInEngland · 29/11/2022 11:54

I like cats but I'd never inflict them on an OH that wasn't also into them. They're lower maintenance than dogs but can still be demanding depending on their personality.

Unless you’re a vegan, don’t drive, don’t shit, don’t pollute in any way (which is blinding obviously you do at least one of those) then you’re a MASSIVE hypocrite. You are being an entitled human, who thinks their shit doesn’t stink and their actions don’t harm others. Knew you had an agenda and you’ve just shown your true colours.

You’re wrong about cats and it’s been scientifically proven cats form attachments to their owners.
You also seem to know a lot about cats considering you loathe them.

KimCatererall · 29/11/2022 13:25

I was always told don't trust someone who doesn't like animals.

@DumbleDorey Ignor the cat hater.

I’m no cat fan but something about this post leads me to believe that @YellowTreeHouse may be a little bit unhinged fragile about something in her life other than cats!

YellowTreeHouse · 29/11/2022 16:29

@DumbleDorey Oh really, what’s my agenda?

I’m not a hypocrite. I never said I don’t affect society in any way. You are welcome to continue to believe whatever you want about your animals.

@KimCatererall I like animals. I don’t like cats.

Thanks @Geville - I did have a very beneficial chat with DH about the cat. As it is, I am pleased to report the cat is staying. He appears to be flea free (the treatment from the vet does seem to have done the trick) which is a relief for him and of course for us.

Many posts on here have been extremely helpful and I am grateful for them.

I’m so glad. Tbh it sounds as if you’ve called your DH’s bluff - saying you’ll rehome the cat - and he realises he’s gone too far hence suddenly realising he’s now flea free. You’ve really had to fight your corner on this despite how horrible and upsetting it’s been, and now you have come to a resolution. Just take note and if he raises it again, stand firm and remind him of the conversation.

I think you’ve been amazing and hopefully will have turned the corner in how to communicate

Your agenda to express your dislike of cats, why else would you post a pointless remark about cats when you loathe them?
You are a hypocrite, you are stating that one specie is a burden to society because they excrete food waste. I guess you also feel the same about humans?

My cat is pretty fond of me - he's had plenty of opportunities to leave home if I was that bad! He doesn't have to get up to follow me into the bathroom either. He's also not a 'dirty nuisance animal' either, like most cats he's very clean and has always used his own garden as his toilet.

And no cats don't smell.

The Governess who died at the grand old age of 21 in her final year smelled a bit as she became ill.

But no I really don't get this all cats smell rubbish, smell a cat when it's been out in the cold winter air, they smell devine.

One of my cats was super special and always smelt of baby powder on her forehead. Although that particular girl was hard to get close to as she was a very special pychotic naughty tortie. You diced with death going in for a kiss.

😂

Non cat people just don't understand, by the way we think you are all evil if you don't like cats 😘

I'm not too bothered about husbands though.

I think @YellowTreeHouse has a slate loose and several more sliding.... people shouldn't entertain him/her/it. Bit of a fixation there, methinks. I suppose cats are the only creatures to shit 🙄Cats are actually very fastidious, always cleaning themselves.

@KimCatererall tortie and whites are my all-time favourite, though I've had cats of all colours. We lost our tuxedo boy earlier in the year; he was 20. So we adopted two most gorgeous tortie and white girls. They are such fun, and good company! The 2 year old is utterly crazy, still behaves like a kitten - and like yours a naughty tortie!! She's adorable. I sometimes feel sorry for people who've never had a cat in their lives. They don't know what they are missing. I prefer cats to most people!
