To ask how many loads of laundry a week is normal!?

hugznotdrugz · 24/11/2022 13:35

I seem to have a never ending of stream of laundry!

In a week I end to do: 3-4 loads of clothes, 1 load of towels and 2 loads of sheets.

Family of 4!

Is this a normal amount? Is there a way to make it more economical? I'm looking at my energy tracker today and getting annoyed with how much I've spent just because of the laundy

On a related question ... those doing more than a few loads - how are you getting the washing dry? It's been more raining than not here recently (appreciate this may vary in other parts of the country) so no chance of drying outside, so do you all have large houses that fit lots of airers or huge tumble dryer bills ...?

I tumble dry my laundry, except in the summer.

Tumble dryer. No choice due to disabled child leading to lots of washing.

DillDanding · 25/11/2022 14:58

We tumble dry all year round. We don’t have a washing line, nor want one.

When we bought this house, there was a 50m line and posts in the garden, but we removed them.

We have a small holiday house in Florida, on one of those ‘Stepford’ type developments on a lake where everything is neat and perfect. The homeowners agreement actually states that drying washing outside is not permitted. Even as a lazy arsed Brit who is welded to her tumble dryer, this seems mad - it’s boiling there all year round!

Dehumidifier in spare room, airing cupboard, rack in bathroom where there's a heated towel rail. Only tumble dry towels (once a week).

Would also still hang out on a breezy day if the humidity wasn't so high.

Foxglovesandlilacs86 · 25/11/2022 15:32

I know but I only like white towels 😩😂

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 25/11/2022 16:19

4 people - now all adults but the system has been the same for years

per week:
1 load of 60°C / 90°C laundry - everything that touches the body directly + cleaning rags
2 loads of 40°C dark - things that do not touch the body directly

every other week in turns:
1 load of 60° - 2 sets of sheets, duvet and pillow covers

We have no laundy that demands special treatment, apart from the rare woolens, which I wash by hand.

Dried indoors or outside on airers

Washing powder and water softener according to the recommendations of our water supplier as we have very hard water. No other products.

Theoldwoman · 25/11/2022 22:51

Surely you don’t wash bras which are delicate at 60 or 90 degrees?

allboysherebutme · 25/11/2022 22:57

7 to 10. Depending on if you do extras like quilts or cushion covers ect. X

AlwaysLatte · 25/11/2022 23:00

I don't understand how a family of 4 can only do 3 loads a week. I find our towels take up two loads on their own each week, 4 kingsize and double duvets and sheets also take 2-3 loads and then there is all our teen boys sporting things, school uniform, pet bedding etc. before I even start on day to day clothes. Then there are the 'occasionals' like bathrobes x4 (6 if the guest bedroom ones are used), trainers, rugs etc.

AlwaysLatte · 25/11/2022 23:03

Inthink mostly it’s because we don’t re use towels
We bought some hooks with initials on, so everyone's towel is hung on their own hook.

AlwaysLatte · 25/11/2022 23:09

Why do people wash towels and bedding separately?
We usually have 4-6 thick bath towels a week, plus 6 hand towels and 3 bath mats. They wouldn't fit with the bedding and in any case I find the unevenness in material thickness can make the washing b machine shudder as it spins. I don't think it's good for the bearings.

vincettenoir · 25/11/2022 23:15

About 4 to 5 loads a week for 3 of us.

VestaTilley · 25/11/2022 23:20

Because I have an 11kg washing machine and tumble dryer.

Game. Changer.

Some of those families of 4 will have 2 small children.
People wash bedding fortnightly and their DC have smaller beds.
They use a towel each for a week - 4 towels=less than a single load
They don't have pets so no pet bedding.
I don't know anyone that puts trainers or rugs in the machine :)
They are non-sporty families (and wouldn't wash sports stuff every time unless caked in mud or something).
School uniform is 5 shirts and a pair of trousers per week - during which time the DC is not wearing other clothes.

Basically, they use less stuff and they wash it less frequently.

(We are generally 4 loads with 2 adults and 2 teens. We do have a slightly larger washing machine).

Coasterfan · 26/11/2022 11:51

Almost every day so probably 5 or 6 loads a week, we are a family of 4.

Sweettruelies · 26/11/2022 12:04

Ha I recall a similar thread to this before the energy crisis. One poster declared themselves a ‘one wear’ family and that they would never lower their standards, so did at least 2 loads a day. I bet they’re not doing that now!

Nogoodusername · 26/11/2022 12:35

Absolutely loads. Family of four - a teen and a pre teen who are very tall (teen is taller than me): school uniform, after school clothes, uniforms for various activities
a clothes wash daily
a delicates wash twice a week
a whites weekly
3x bedding weekly
2x towel washes weekly
3x bathroom hand towels and mats weekly

so that’s 18 washes a week. Oh my god

luxxlisbon · 26/11/2022 13:27

Family of 3, 2-3 loads a week. Usually a light wash, dark wash and towel/ bedding or white wash.
Obviously occasionally there might be an addition wash of blankets, cushion covers etc but it’s always less than every other day or 2 loads on a weekend if we haven’t been on top of it in the week.

DuckWalkedUpToALemonadeStand · 26/11/2022 13:29

I do one load of towels a week, one load of bedsheets, one or two loads of clothes. 1a, 2c.
Occasional extra load of clothes here and there.

hugznotdrugz · 26/11/2022 14:55

@TTheoldwoman I don't actually put my underwire bras in the washing machine I hand wash them (I put sports bras in though)

Good to know we're about average!
