To ask how many loads of laundry a week is normal!?

hugznotdrugz · 24/11/2022 13:35

I seem to have a never ending of stream of laundry!

In a week I end to do: 3-4 loads of clothes, 1 load of towels and 2 loads of sheets.

Family of 4!

Is this a normal amount? Is there a way to make it more economical? I'm looking at my energy tracker today and getting annoyed with how much I've spent just because of the laundy

I presume you're joking like the other poster above? If you're not perhaps have a hard think about energy, water, electricity, you know, all that stuff.

Here's what it looks like:

DH has to wash his work clothes daily (he has a very physical job and he is a sweater!) and he does those by themselves after he's soaked them first. It's a bit of a pain and we do try to add some stuff to those loads but it doesn't work out as well as it should.

Whites - 1 load a week.

Towels, bathmats and bedding - 3-4 a week. Family of four. Admittedly, we all use bath sheets so that take up space and two bathrooms so two bathmats. Then bedding is two standard single beds but our bed is a king and we have a second double bed duvet on it as well. So basically 4 sets of bedding. We also swim but usually wash swimming towels fortnightly. It all uses up machine space.

Regular colours - about 3 loads of week. DS does a lot of sport but we tend to only wash his school PE kit once or, at most, twice a week. But he also has sports kit from his club which is 2x training per week and matches fortnightly. And irritatingly, in this colder weather, if he then throws on a hoodie, I sometimes have to wash it sooner than I'd like because frankly, it gets stinky. Both children do martial arts too so that's a full set of kit weekly too although usually that's with the whites and I don't always do DD's.

Sometimes it feels like it's the underwear, socks and pyjamas that push it up too. We don't wash skirts, trousers, hoodies that often, but pants, underpants, pyjama pants, vests (me), shirts and t-shirts are all washed after a day's wear.

So our standard is closer to 11 or 12. But there always seems to be something eg, this week, the dog has been sick so I've washed the couch cushion covers, the bathmat (less than a day after I'd replaced it) and the rug in DS' bedroom because she bloody vomited on all of them.

The week before, we had family staying with us, so extra bedding.

With that terrible weather we had a week or two ago, I had to wash extra because me and the DC got caught in the rain while walking the dog and all of us came in absolutely soaked and covered in mud. I was particularly annoyed as I'd taken my jeans out of the laundry that day. Kids was less of an issue - leggings and trackies and extra socks!

turkeyboots · 24/11/2022 14:40

I do a load most weekdays and 3 or 4 over the weekend. Disclaimer is that I have a swimmer and an endless amount of wet towels coming home.

Wizenedolehag · 24/11/2022 14:42

Family of 4 , teenagers both doing their sports 3/4 times a week . One clothes load each day and a quick wash (20mins) for the sports kits as needed . A load of towels and 2 loads bedding about every ten days

We do an astonishing amount of laundry. Never ceases to amaze me. I worked it out recently and I think we do a minimum of 12 a week and sometimes as many as 16. We do have extra laundry due to DH's work, but even without that, we'd still be looking at 10-14. It's RIDICULOUS.

Depending on how many of you there are it does seem daft. And you can see it’s ridiculous. So don’t do it? Look where you can reduce.

I agree. I'm washing continuously... actually I'm typing this from inside the washing machine drum... hang on, spin cycle coming up!

I do a load per day and theres me and 2 small DCs... i think that's normal tbh everyone i know with kids has the washing machine on daily.
I always hear from my mum that in the old days when i was a baby and she had a twin tub she did laundry once a week but i couldn't manage like that!

I remember this though - it was an all day job though. So a LOT Of washing was done in that one day.

Re towels and bedding - I do them together but we have enough it usually lands up being mostly one or the other. Similarly, I do whites but if it's a small load that week, I usually add sheets or a duvet cover to the whites load and reduce the bedding/towel loads. I do like to do both bedding and towels at 60 at least once every couple of weeks though. And agree that towels can be heavy - I'm convinced that DH overfills our machine with towels and that's why we sometimes have a problem.

I think it would be very unusual for most families to do less than 7 loads a week, assuming they're washing bedding and towels weekly. 7-10 seems to be about standard when I chat to friends with some doing more if they are very active with sports/gym or have extra work clothes.

We also do the sports/gym kit on quicker cycles but pre-soak them first in a tub. DH is very very sweaty.

Caterina99 · 24/11/2022 14:47

Family of 4. Probably about 5 loads a week on average.

The laundry pile seems never ending!

hugznotdrugz · 24/11/2022 14:49

Promise I'm not a troll 😂 I guess just feeling abit deflated about costs- I've spent nearly £7 on the electric so far today and still have another 2 loads to go. Sheets have to be done separately to towels as we have 2 single bads and a king- we also go through 5-6 towels, plus facecloths bath mat and hand towels.

In a normal day we only spent about £3.

For various reasons I didn't live with the family for about 18 months and only did washing every 8ish days so I guess I'm just struggling with family life again and feeling like A) it's costing alot and B) it's just ever ending

How often do you reuse towels?
How often do you rewear jeans?
How often do you change the sheets?

rainbowzebra05 · 24/11/2022 14:50

A load a day, plus bedding, and the baby tends to produce 2 loads a week on his own Blush

I THINK it totals about 15 loads weekly for a family of 5. Though middle child's autistic, not potty trained, and goes through at least 3 sets of clothes a day because we're struggling to find nappies that don't leak now that he's outgrowing the biggest size supermarkets stock. He also makes a bedding load a day for the same reason! He can never rewear either as he's ALWAYS covered in something from sensory seeking. Without his extra "contributions" we'd be looking at about 7 I think.

TheBirdintheCave · 24/11/2022 14:53

We're a household of three (two adults and a toddler) and I do maybe five wash loads a week.

2 x dark wash on 30c for our clothes
1 x sheets and towels
2 x nappies on a short wash with detergent to rinse them, then add the whites and on for a long 60c wash

Christmaslover2022 · 24/11/2022 14:53

About 8 loads per week.
I do towels and beds every week or I think its a bit gross 🤣

megletthesecond · 24/11/2022 14:54

3 of us. About 14 loads a week. Some are smaller loads as gym and PE kit needs washing quickly.

mewkins · 24/11/2022 14:54

Fufumcgoo · 24/11/2022 14:17

That depends on how much you have to wash, what they're made of, what temp you wash on and how much you care about your washing machine.

Towels are heavy, bedding is not as heavy. For even loading I wash separately as I prefer not to fuck up my expensive machine on a badly weighted spin cycle.

I also wash towels hotter than I do bedding simply due to the fabric type.

I did indeed do this the other day and it made an horrific noise. I always wondered what happened when you overloaded a washing machine.

MerlinsButler · 24/11/2022 14:58

3 x adults and pets here.

We do ( Me and DP)
1 x bedding per week
1 x towels per week
1 x darks per week
1 x workwear per week

1 x whites per fortnight
1 x delicates / handwash cycle every fortnight
Pet bedding1 x fortnight

Stepson will do one bedding wash and one clothes wash per week as well.

Pretty normal.

You presumably know you are behaving in a very unusual way.

FourTeaFallOut · 24/11/2022 15:02

About 14 loads a week with a 10.5 kg washing machine, family of five - four adult sized.

monsteronahill · 24/11/2022 15:03

I do about that for a family of two 😂 sounds fine to me!

SantanaBinLorry · 24/11/2022 15:04

4 a week.
Whites (school shirts and towels)
Tops
Bottoms
undies, pj's and socks.
Once a month bedding gets done

underneaththeash · 24/11/2022 15:04

CuddlyRita · 24/11/2022 14:08

Why do people wash towels and bedding separately?

They take different times to dry in the dryer. No point having it on longer than you need

SantanaBinLorry · 24/11/2022 15:04

family of four thats for.

Cheerfulcharlie · 24/11/2022 15:09

Family of 4 - about 12-14 loads a week but in school holidays it is a bit less. During term time there are 4 x swimming sessions, 3 x football sessions 4 x PE sessions plus my son likes to play football in the mud at breaktime everyday. I don't see how I could do any less. I definitely do not wash for fun!

whirlyhead · 24/11/2022 15:10

2 of us with several cats, one bulimic. Usually I do about 4-5 loads a week, 1 is bedding, 1 is sheets (do you lot all have tiny beds so you can fit it all in one machine together??) I also will wear socks for 2 days. Feel free to be disgusted.

Bulimic cat also likes to throw up on at least one rug and one throw a week so there's another load!
