To ask how many loads of laundry a week is normal!?

hugznotdrugz · 24/11/2022 13:35

I seem to have a never ending of stream of laundry!

In a week I end to do: 3-4 loads of clothes, 1 load of towels and 2 loads of sheets.

Family of 4!

Is this a normal amount? Is there a way to make it more economical? I'm looking at my energy tracker today and getting annoyed with how much I've spent just because of the laundy

Why do people wash towels and bedding separately?

We have all white bedding and dark grey towels so wash them separately.

Depends on washing machine size too though. Mines an 8kg one, so two/three a week on average. Family of 4.

Absolutely this. I probably do about 8 a week for three adults but the washing machine is old with a small drum. A complete set of king size bedding would overload it.

Beds now only get done once a fortnight and I rewear stuff loads, so I don't think I'm washing things that don't need it.

Why do people wash towels and bedding separately?

Because one set of bedding is a full load as is 4 or 5 towels. Plus we wash towels hotter than bedding.

Crabwoman · 25/11/2022 10:45

My mum lives with us so 3 adults, 2 kids and a elderly dog.

7-8 loads a week.

Roughly speaking, 5 if us create 1 load each of clothing a week.
1 load is various sports kits.
Bedding, towels, dogs bedding etc is the rest.

Rutennotou · 25/11/2022 10:49

Five or six a week for 4 of us but our machine is small.

Taxistaxing · 25/11/2022 10:49

2-3 a week, me and 2dc. Even when they were smaller I never did more washes, bedding/towels get changed every 1-2 weeks, underwear gets changed everyday, and clothes probably last a couple of days unless sweaty/marked but I have a couple of sets of all so no urgency to run the washing machine all the time and can wait until it's a full load.

Come on, own up. Which humourless curmudgeon reported ShirleyPhallus and consequently made much of the thread nonsensical? Goodness me, it was a joke.

ichundich · 25/11/2022 11:12

3-4 in total including bedding and woollens. I'd consider washing bedding every 3-4 weeks only, especially kids'. Wear deodorant and mud trousers when playing outside in this weather if kids are small. Jumpers and trousers can be worn more than once unless they are stained. I change towels once a week and collect them over 2 weeks before I wash them all together.

Blame MNHQ they're the ones that actually removed it.

HotDogJumpingFrogHaveACookie · 25/11/2022 11:18

Dunno. We each do our own laundry (no kids). I do 1 load a week and I assume he must do similar. Bedding gets done with towels, which is another load.

KnittedCardi · 25/11/2022 11:26

Two adults, separate beds, so two loads for bedding and towels, and one dark and one white per week. Average 4. I do hand wash all my bras, and all our jumpers though.

Taxistaxing · 25/11/2022 11:33

@cucumberegg don't wish to be nosey (but am going to ask anyway) if you have a king size bed and 3 doubles but 2 children under 3, who is sleeping in the doubles that you need to wash them?

PhantomErik · 25/11/2022 11:47

As a family of 5 we generally do 1 load a day.

wincarwoo · 25/11/2022 12:48

A little as possible. Our clean culture is no longer sustainable. Clean pants everyday. That's the max now. Sheets on beds for at least two weeks (nobody notices and there are no consequences)

Surely you all wear clean socks every day too?

wincarwoo · 25/11/2022 12:54

I do about 5 loads a day and tumble dry them.

10 of us in my house, 8 kids.

Inthink mostly it’s because we don’t re use towels but it’s hard with so many people, we’d just have damp towels hanging everywhere and no one would know who’s is who’s.

JoanDarc · 25/11/2022 13:17

Family of four, all active so lots of sports kit/ gym gear, on average about 11/12 loads a week. Drives me up the bloody wall, forever doing laundry.

You do know towels come in more than ten different colours? Just colour code instead of single handedly destroying the planet. I was really hoping that the rise in energy prices would stop this insanity.

Heartbreaktuna · 25/11/2022 13:33

4 loads for us. Family of 3. Lights, darks, towels, bedding. We wash towels separately because they can be quite rough on delicate clothing so can reduce the life span of your clothes. Plus you can use fabric conditioner on them.

Heartbreaktuna · 25/11/2022 13:34

*can't !

I don't mind! So both kids have a double bed (they're just turned 2 and just turned 3). Eldest had a single bed initially but fell out of it pretty much every night, even with a bed guard, so we automatically went to a double with the youngest too. King size is for me and DH but I also work weird shifts so I'll often take the other double at night to avoid waking anyone up when I come in and DH sleeps in the king alone.

Theoldwoman · 25/11/2022 13:48

10-20 loads a week.
4 adults, 1 dog, 1 cat.
Cold water wash except for linen. All line dried.
Have solar panels, so wash between 8am and 5pm.

Gym gear, 2 x work uniforms daily almost that get filthy, clean clothes daily, towels every 3 days, sheets weekly, pet bedding 1-2 weekly.

I enjoy doing the laundry.
