To ask how many loads of laundry a week is normal!?

hugznotdrugz · 24/11/2022 13:35

I seem to have a never ending of stream of laundry!

In a week I end to do: 3-4 loads of clothes, 1 load of towels and 2 loads of sheets.

Family of 4!

Is this a normal amount? Is there a way to make it more economical? I'm looking at my energy tracker today and getting annoyed with how much I've spent just because of the laundy

She's being sarcastic!

I really didn't catch on there, I read it twice too Grin

There are outliers on every spectrum so just thought that was the far edge!

Flapjackquack · 24/11/2022 15:11

This thread is showing me why some people have such high energy bills!

antipodeancanary · 24/11/2022 15:11

We are two people. We do at least two washes per week of paramedic uniforms. One towels, one bedding, at least two lots of gym kit, then one normal dark and one normal light. So 8 per week.

FancyANewID · 24/11/2022 15:12

There are always people on these threads who sneer and chortle at the thought of doing more than 4 loads a week 🙄

We do 20 loads a week I'd say. Family of 5. One bedwetter. One dog. Three boys that play a variety of outdoor, muddy sports.

If it's anything less than 20 that's a win in this house.

CuddlyRita · 24/11/2022 14:08

Why do people wash towels and bedding separately?

Because they're trying to quantify the amount easily for other posters to see in their mind's eye? If they're being literal, as in they'd wash two towels separately from some bedding, then they're obviously unhinged and god help the planet.

MyBuggyIsOutToGetMe · 24/11/2022 15:14

Family of 4, including a grubby toddler. Ideally I would do a load every other day but the issue at the moment is getting it dry. So we have a backlog at the moment. Probably between 3 and 4 loads a week.

I tend to do bedding and towels every 10 days to 2 weeks. I do them separately as I’d rather do towels on 60. But planning to take the latter to the laundrette to use their super big driers.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 24/11/2022 15:16

We do the same as you for family of 4 - 2 adults 2 teens.

notdaddycool · 24/11/2022 15:16

Family of 4, probably 3 a week.

You presumably know you are behaving in a very unusual way.

Nah that's usual for our Shirley

AutumnCrow · 24/11/2022 15:27

Back in the 70s, when I was at big school, we were simply expected to wear the same games / PE kit all term. We were however encouraged to rinse out armpits regularly and to use deoderant. It was a quite badge of honour to have grubby kit for field sports. Standards were delightfully low at St Cake's.

Swimming costumes were washed and wrung out in the showers, wrapped up in towels and both were hung out to dry at the first opportunity.

Okki · 24/11/2022 15:34

Depends on washing machine size too though. Mines an 8kg one, so two/three a week on average. Family of 4.

hugznotdrugz · 24/11/2022 15:37

@BBernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz towels are reused for 4-5 days, I don't wear jeans- tights and dresses/skirts or gym clothes, because I work out at home I tend to rewear my gym kit but change daily clothes each day, rewear pj's for 3-4 days, dp rewears jeans 3-4 times and just changes shirt/t-shirt/socks etc.

You sound about normal although if you wanted to cut down you can probably wear/use things a little bit longer first.

Not 27 or whatever bonkers amount people do on here. There are 5 of us, I'm a bit slatternly with sheets and towels and we do 6-7 per week.

You change sheets and towels DAILY? Congratulations on helping ruin the planet.

BertieBotts · 24/11/2022 15:42

Another thing when looking at the electricity use is consider colder washes and longer cycles eg the eco cycles are often long but use less electricity.

Heating the water is the most energy intensive bit, so choosing a colder wash or even cold wash at least for some loads will help cut running costs.

As476 · 24/11/2022 15:50

I wash bedding weekly. My work uniform needs doing every day on its own as I work in a garage and engine oil gets on everything otherwise. Family of 4 with 2DC in school, both attending clubs with uniforms.

I get through about 9/10 loads a week 😬. I tried to leave my uniform for once every few days but it was rank. I also tried leaving it in its own basket to wash once a week but the oil got all over everything and I couldn’t get the stains out.

I have started doing this for clothes washes. I am very pleasantly surprised at the results.

The smells and stains I couldn't get out before come right out! Madness!

This must be a joke.

Terracottage · 24/11/2022 15:56

8-11 for a family of four
3 of those at least are swimming stuff and sports kits! A couple for uniforms, the rest for weekend clothes, one load a week is towels, once a fortnight 2 extra loads for all the bedding. Sometimes an extra load for other soft items like cushion covers etc. Always have a back log, so could easily do much more if I had the time.

It is but I fell for it Blush

Batmansmummy · 24/11/2022 15:59

I do 2 loads a day everyday I've got a washer dryer so each cycle takes 8 hours so my washer is on for 16 hours everyday and we only average £3/£4 a day electric . There 5 of us 2 adults 3 kids . 2 who go swimming every day after school one who's out getting mucky playing football and 5 showers/baths a day so my basket is never empty .

WaddleAway · 24/11/2022 16:00

Family of 5, one disabled child who leads to extra washing. I probably do 8-10 loads a week.

Notanotherone6 · 24/11/2022 16:03

Maybe 6 or 7 loads. Darks, lights, brights, whites and towels. Bedding gets done every 2/3 weeks but I have six beds to change. Family of 7.

I’ve been on threads where it very well could have been true!

Lb603 · 24/11/2022 16:13

i do two loads most days (some days ill just do one)- im ashamed writing it out, but my washing basket seems to be constantly full, and if i leave it longer i'd never keep on top of it.

Family of 4- but two kids under 2 so lots of filthy clothes. DS (8m) has horrendous reflux so lots of sick. I also have 2 dogs and a horse so clothes get soaked/filthy from being out there.

on the days i wash the bedcovers (normally a tuesday) i will only do one clothes load.
