To ask how many loads of laundry a week is normal!?

hugznotdrugz · 24/11/2022 13:35

I seem to have a never ending of stream of laundry!

In a week I end to do: 3-4 loads of clothes, 1 load of towels and 2 loads of sheets.

Family of 4!

Is this a normal amount? Is there a way to make it more economical? I'm looking at my energy tracker today and getting annoyed with how much I've spent just because of the laundy

I change my sheets once a week but fresh pj's every night and shower before bed. It's really not necessary to change sheets everyday however you do you just don't call people mingers 😂

Onlyforcake · 24/11/2022 16:23

10-12 loads a week here (family of five). Its a big drum

BuckarooBanzai · 24/11/2022 16:28

Family of 5, 4 adults one teenager, we have 2 work uniforms that are washed on a fancy washing machine hygiene setting after every shift. Works out about 2 washes a day as an average. Bedding is left to individuals to sort especially those who come in drunk and vomit in their beds...Grin

Grim. If you’re not getting up twice a night to shower, change your sheets, air your bedroom and steam clean your mattress then you’re basically just a pig living in your own filth. Every other time you should also deep clean your bathroom and kitchen just to be on the safe side.

Bestcatmum · 24/11/2022 16:31

I do max two loads of laundry a week and take it down to the laundrette to dry.
I work for the NHS and have to have a clean uniform daily - I have 5 uniforms.
I barely sweat so I change my sheets once a fortnight and they are still fine then.
I live on my own.

fussychica · 24/11/2022 16:37

Two people. At this time of year usually 2 loads per week darks and whites plus lights every other week. More in summer with more bed changes etc. All bedding and towels are white.

sheepdogdelight · 24/11/2022 16:40

This does depend on the size of your washing machine!
When ours died a couple of years ago, we bought one with a bigger drum and have gone from 6 and sometimes 7 loads a week to 4 and sometimes 5.

I always hope the people who are doing multiple loads a day with their family of 4 simply have small washing machines and are not obsessive washers as stereotyped so well by ShirelyPhallus

I’ve been on threads where it very well could have been true!

There was a recent thread where the OP genuinely did 14-18 washes per week for a family of four!

@Newpuppymummy did you manage to reduce the amount you’re doing?!

I bathe 3 times per day in a mix of anti bac and zeflora, have I redeemed myself?

you bathe 3 times a day and only change your towels once!!!??

Cleome · 24/11/2022 16:55

3 cloth nappy washes, 4-5 other washes. It's the drying time in winter that drives me mad.

Why on earth did @ShirlShirleyPhallus get deleted? Someone obviously had a sense of humour fail 🙄

MilkyYay · 25/11/2022 07:41

Tbh, if you aim to change beds fortnightly & towels weekly it can be hard to reduce from this per week:

  • 1 load of bedding (just can't get 1 king set & 2 doubles in at once, ive tried)
  • 1 load of towels
  • 1 white wash
  • 1 coloured

Key is: wear clothes more than once.

I rarely achieve the above, usually a third run of clothing gets run. And thats with no bedwetting etc, although the 3yo gets clothing stained a lot.

Every three or so weeks an extra towel wash has to be added in.

zizza · 25/11/2022 07:46

No fabric conditioner with towels

Laundry is a serious business

FourOclock · 25/11/2022 08:40

Oh god I never really thought I did a lot of washing until I read this thread!

I do at least one load of washing a day, but that normally doesn't allow for bedding/towels so it's probably about 9 or 10 loads a week?

Family of five, one in cloth nappies, the other two kids go to an outdoor school so this time of year they come home thick with mud. Husband is a farmer so he also comes home in very dirty clothes, so a lot of stuff can't be worn more than once. I probably create the least amount of washing with my clothes but then I have an annoying pile in the bedroom constantly of worn-but-still-clean clothes 😂

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/11/2022 08:41

Yeah that's not that much really. 2 teens, and me. One teen plays football and that makes a lot of washing.

PicturesOfDogs · 25/11/2022 08:46

Three of us is 5 loads a week, just in clothes, then extra for towels and bedding.

I generally do two dark washes, one light, one white and one red. The red one can usually be stretched to every two weeks.

Uniforms everyday, used to be a new shirt daily and wear the trousers a few times but my children seem to have reverted to being toddlers who jump in muddy puddles peppa pig style.
I think it’s because the weather has made some grassy areas muddy and they still trek through.

Add that to PE kits, football kits, dancing clothes etc, can’t see how I could do any less

DillDanding · 25/11/2022 08:50

We are a 4, but only 2 at home st the moment.

Dh and I do about 5 loads a week, including 1 each for towels and bedding. When 4 of us are here, it’s easily 7 or 8.

cucumberegg · 25/11/2022 08:51

Family of 4. We do at least 15 a week, probably closer to 20. DH & I work out every day, both kids (under 3) are in nursery full time so tend to come home with at least 1 change of clothes daily and the "clean" outfit they come home in will also need a wash. Both sleep in nappies so I don't like the smell of them rewearing pyjamas. Our clothes generally get washed most days. 1 king size bed & 3 double beds to wash (although I'm not as good at keeping on top of those every week).

Mentalpiece · 25/11/2022 08:57

CuddlyRita · 24/11/2022 14:08

Why do people wash towels and bedding separately?

Because I can't fit it all into one load.
Two single duvet covers, plus two single sheets and six pillow cases fill one load and two bath sheets with two hand towels and a bath mat fill the other load.

theruffles · 25/11/2022 09:38

Family of 4. I do a load a day (sometimes 2) but DC1 is prone to accidents at night so that causes more bed linen washing. If I didn't do a load a day the washing would pile up and just create more work in the long run. DC2 is also a messy toddler (and seems to leak a lot) so that creates more washing.

Autumnalleavestime · 25/11/2022 09:40

Just two of us here, so four loads a week, one each for clothes, one for bedding one for towels

when our daughter is home it’s way more, two for her clothes, and another for towels and another for bedding. So another four. Making it 8.
