To ask how many loads of laundry a week is normal!?

hugznotdrugz · 24/11/2022 13:35

I seem to have a never ending of stream of laundry!

In a week I end to do: 3-4 loads of clothes, 1 load of towels and 2 loads of sheets.

Family of 4!

Is this a normal amount? Is there a way to make it more economical? I'm looking at my energy tracker today and getting annoyed with how much I've spent just because of the laundy

Twice a day. I do have a very messy young child in my defence though. Wash her clothes constantly.

Give over 😂😂😂

OP the answer is to drop your standards a bit and spotclean/rewear things wherever you can.

Better for your pocket and better for the environment.

Averagely, I suppose 1 load of clothes per person (4), then a towels & tea towels wash, and a bedding wash. Two beds’ worth of bedding in each wash as change beds every other week. Plus a wash of dog towels/bedding… and any ad hoc loads specially needed. It’s a lot. I don’t think it’s possible to cut down much with kids in after school physical activities etc.

Family of four. I go to the gym 3 x a week, DC have football matches and training, so lots of sweaty kit to wash.

We do 1 lot of whites a week, roughly 2 loads of sheets/towels a week and about 3-4 washes of clothes/sports kits. Plus occasional washes of blankets, dressing gowns etc. And a maintenance wash once a month.

Sheets, towels and whites are done on the economy 60c setting, clothes are washed on cold or 20c unless particularly gross- I haven't noticed any difference to how clean clothes and sports kits get on colder washes as long as i am careful not to overload the machine. I have the Samsung Eco Bubble and I always use the bubble soak feature which does seem to help get things clean. According to the app for my washing machine my washing machine uses about 9kWh of electricity each month.

Why do people wash towels and bedding separately?

In our case, only because a load of towels for the house makes 1 full load, and a couple of beds’ worth of bedding makes a full load. It could go in with other stuff but I’d rather deal with them all in a separate load from clothes.

About once every 4 months, bathroom suites are the same expect toilets which we replace monthly

Can never be too sure about keeping things clean!

Oh god, what a filthy cah.... We actually buy new each time, because sweat never comes out and to do otherwise is ridiculous.

The toilet situation is more slovenly, we do have 2 x toilet each for different expulsions. However, they are lined and we fog disinfect daily.

Why do people wash towels and bedding separately?

That depends on how much you have to wash, what they're made of, what temp you wash on and how much you care about your washing machine.

Towels are heavy, bedding is not as heavy. For even loading I wash separately as I prefer not to fuck up my expensive machine on a badly weighted spin cycle.

I also wash towels hotter than I do bedding simply due to the fabric type.

Hahahaha. Good one.

I do a load per day and theres me and 2 small DCs... i think that's normal tbh everyone i know with kids has the washing machine on daily.
I always hear from my mum that in the old days when i was a baby and she had a twin tub she did laundry once a week but i couldn't manage like that!

Why do people wash towels and bedding separately?

Because the drum’s too small for a set of king size bedding and two bath sheets. We do the bedding every fortnight and the bath sheets every week. So three or four loads a week.

Why do people wash towels and bedding separately?

The bedding and towels are a load each. I also wash them at 60 rather than 30. For towels I don’t use detergent, I use white vinegar instead because I don’t own a tumble drier and live in a very hard water area and it makes them marginally softer.

mariiinaa · 24/11/2022 14:20

family of 6 here! i seem to wash 2 loads a day, 4 days a week. so i'd say 8 loads every week

LaChatte · 24/11/2022 14:20

Family of 4 with 6 cats and a minging dog averages out at a load a day (do more on weekends and less during the week because of work). We are definitely NOT clean freaks 😅

Beanbagtrap · 24/11/2022 14:20

I am trying to cut down. We do about a load a day, but until the heating comes on I'm finding in needing to wash towels more as they just sit all dank all day and smell quickly.

AriettyHomily · 24/11/2022 14:21

Probably six a week but towels / bedding go out to the launderette. I have a lot of fun stuff, DH wears a clean uniform every day so it racks up. More in holidays kids wear more clothes than when they are in uniform.

AriettyHomily · 24/11/2022 14:26

*gym not fun

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 24/11/2022 14:28

There was a poster a few weeks ago asking the same thing.
One poster came on to say she put a wash load on maximum twice a week (her & partner, no one else in the house) and could not understand any one would need to do it more. They just did not get it.

Anyway, I do about 6 loads a week for family of 4. 2 wear uniform for work/school so gotta get that done.
2 of us WFH so try to wear the same stuff for 2/3 days as we go nowhere and do nothing other than sit at a lap top.

Isthatarealname · 24/11/2022 14:28

About 10 a week for 4 of us but do expect that to decrease a bit as DS is only 3 and a messy eater/still has the odd accident etc

Wishawisha · 24/11/2022 14:31

Family of 4. Every other day so 3-4 a week.

Towels go in with clothes.

Batbatbatty · 24/11/2022 14:31

I always wonder how large some people's washing machines are to be able to do all bedding in one go 😳

saltofcelery · 24/11/2022 14:34

Four of us and I do two loads a day, every day. There is strategy involved though - bedding on a Tuesday and towels, pet bedding and throws on a Friday. The other days are just for clothes.

Bananalanacake · 24/11/2022 14:35

Family of 4, I do 5 loads a week, I am very good at wearing stuff more than twice except pants. No school uniform in Germany so maybe that helps.

fancyfrogs · 24/11/2022 14:37

3 of us (2 adults and toddler). 3-4 loads per week I'd guess

I couldn't fit it all in the machine!

NCFT0922 · 24/11/2022 14:38

I do a load a day, sometimes 2. Depends what day of the week it is. I wash everyone’s bedding on a Monday. Family of 6.
