Toddler raw meat freaking out

Oceanmoonandstars · 17/11/2022 17:45

DH told me ds 2 yrs old helped him cook dinner while I was out

I asked what and he said he put raw salmon on the pan.

I asked if he washed his hands he just said yeah with a little bit of fairy liquid

I'm freaking out as surely he should of used anti bac??

Anyone's else's little one handle raw meat to help cooking?

I'm so upset but trying to not let it show. I know it's important for under 5s to avoid food poisoning. He's also had his hands in his mouth all evening..

That sounds fine. I use fairy and water to wash hands. Never anti bac.

wlajspna · 17/11/2022 17:47

Washing with fairy liquid will be fine - I mean you wash all the things you prepare the uncooked meat with, with fairy liquid don't you?

FannyFifer · 17/11/2022 17:48

Fairy liquid is antibac and totally acceptable to wash your hands with.

Badgirlriri · 17/11/2022 17:48

Salmon isn’t meat, it’s fish. People eat raw fish. Using washing up liquid is fine.

Oceanmoonandstars · 17/11/2022 17:49

Good point. I just am so stringent with hand washing and only do baking cakes with him. I wouldn't dream of giving him raw meat to handle so freaked out a little

Not an issue

salmon is not meat

hands were washed with soap

Teaandcrumpets95 · 17/11/2022 17:50

Fairy liquid absolutely fine- if anything I'd be worried it's too harsh for little ones skin.

It's designed to clean food and cooking debris ect, so definitely effective.

Ducksurprise · 17/11/2022 17:50

Anti bac isn't as effective against lots of things. Soap is the best. E coli isn't washed away by antibac but is by soap.

Oceanmoonandstars · 17/11/2022 17:50

@Badgirlriri yes but I thought babies and toddlers shouldn't eat raw fish or seafood/shellfood

Washing up liquid is what I’ve always used to wash my hands - it’s all my Nan used to use for 90 years and never did us any harm at all - it’s so good at killing germs. Please don’t worry (I know saying that doesn’t help but!)

astronewt · 17/11/2022 17:51

Fgs calm down. People eat raw salmon all the time, and he washed his hands with a perfectly adequate soap. There's no need for "anti-bac" ever. Common or garden soap is fine.

sakura06 · 17/11/2022 17:52

Don't worry OP as others have said, soap is the most effective thing to wash your hands with. Also, plenty of people and cultures eat raw fish, so please don't worry (plus he didn't actually eat the fish anyway).

DogInATent · 17/11/2022 17:53

It's fine.
Soap and water (or washing up liquid and water) is as good (and frequently batter) as 'antibac'.

Roundmywaythe · 17/11/2022 17:53

When I think of all the things my 2 year old put in her mouth….I means she’s 7 now and are food she dropped on a wet path the other day….builds resilience

imbacktoshowyoumydress · 17/11/2022 17:55

My little one literally eats soil. He will be fine.

Tootsweets84 · 17/11/2022 17:57

If you're in the UK it's perfectly safe to eat fresh raw salmon. No parasites. To be honest though, even if it had been raw chicken, washing his hands in warm, soapy water is fine. Your child will eat/lick much worse things over the years!

RoseslnTheHospital · 17/11/2022 18:00

Have a read of how soap kills germs and you'll realise why additional antibacterial additives are unnecessary.

www.livescience.com/how-soap-kills-germs

Also, in the UK, raw salmon meat is not a dangerous source of germs, particularly.

Spacebears · 17/11/2022 18:06

Don't worry. He will be fine

caroleanboneparte · 17/11/2022 18:07

Don't mean to upset you further but this is disordered anxiety.

Are you anxious about other things? Have you done an online anxiety test? If you are this anxious in general you should speak to your gp.

Oceanmoonandstars · 17/11/2022 18:13

@caroleanboneparte that's OK no offence taken. Yes I can suffer with anxiety mostly to do with the children. I suffered years of infertility so I tend to be hyper vigilant about their safety

How do you think fairy liquid kills ecoli etc when you wash up?

Cookerhood · 17/11/2022 18:20

Anti bac stuff can actually be counter productive. Soap (or washing up liquid) is just fine.

Thesearmsofmine · 17/11/2022 18:22

It’s fine and great that he is helping to cook. Mine all enjoyed helping to make meatballs when little.

gogohmm · 17/11/2022 18:23

??? What do you think we used before they invented antibac soap? Normal soap or fairy liquid in the kitchen. Also my kids have been eating raw fish since about that ageGrin
