Toddler raw meat freaking out

Oceanmoonandstars · 17/11/2022 17:45

DH told me ds 2 yrs old helped him cook dinner while I was out

I asked what and he said he put raw salmon on the pan.

I asked if he washed his hands he just said yeah with a little bit of fairy liquid

I'm freaking out as surely he should of used anti bac??

Anyone's else's little one handle raw meat to help cooking?

I'm so upset but trying to not let it show. I know it's important for under 5s to avoid food poisoning. He's also had his hands in his mouth all evening..

Seems highly unlikely to be a coincidence. When mucus in poo is googled salmonella is one of the top causes. Plus you don't know if he had it under his nails and I'm only taking my husbands word for how thoroughly he cleaned his hands. Just letting MN'ers know it can still happen..

But if he had it under his nails ‘antibac’ wouldn’t have helped.

it’s a food prep/general hand hygiene issue

Surely you have the results back by now. He was ill over a week ago.

EndlessRain · 28/11/2022 11:03

Yes, yabu and overreacting. Let your DH parent, your kids will be fine.

Lilabelle22 · 28/11/2022 11:14

@jamoncrumpets we didn't contact Dr on first day as thought maybe it would pass and was unrelated.

Lilabelle22 · 28/11/2022 11:20

Can anyone give me a logical idea of what else the mucus could be related too then if I am still being unreasonable. Has anyone experienced this before with their LO and what was it?

Firen · 28/11/2022 11:29

Yes, my little one has had mucus in their poo on occasions. It’s just normal children’s ailments unfortunately.

jamoncrumpets · 28/11/2022 11:34

I had mucus in my poo this morning. I have a viral infection caught from my youngest and it's aggravated my existing bowel condition.

Touching a piece of raw salmon doesn't make you ill. You need to work on your anxiety around this stuff, I am speaking as someone with awful health anxiety. Your radar is all off.

I'm not proud but, when my now 13yr old DS was about 18 months....I caught him sucking a pram wheel 😳

DD loved to lick shoes.

She also once ate an undigested tomato from the poo that had leaked out the side of her nappy.

She's honest to god got one of the best immune systems I've ever come across. She could be bathing in raw chicken and still be 100% fine.

Lilabelle22 · 28/11/2022 12:19

@NKFell yes we've had this, they love those wheels!

Salmon isn’t meat, it’s fish. People eat raw fish. Using washing up liquid is fine.

This depends on the type of salmon.

Sushi Salmon is fine to eat raw due to how it is caught and prepared for storage. Normal Salmon isn't suitable for eating raw and can carry parasites.

That said, I wouldn't be too worried. I believe it's rare.

Lilabelle22 · 28/11/2022 12:42

Thank you @WaffleIron i think everyone seems to be confused, it wasn't sushi he touched it was raw supermarket fillets of salmon

saffy7 · 28/11/2022 12:48

Oceanmoonandstars · 17/11/2022 17:49

Good point. I just am so stringent with hand washing and only do baking cakes with him. I wouldn't dream of giving him raw meat to handle so freaked out a little

More dangerous to handle raw egg than raw fish!

Cookerhood · 28/11/2022 13:24

Raw eggs are not dangerous. Hens are vaccinated against salmonella.

Dontaskdontget · 28/11/2022 13:45

Soap, such as fairy liquid, is much more effective at killing germs than anti-bacterial gels etc.

The NHS have been trying very hard to explain this to people for years. Even pre-covid I saw posters in public toilets warning that the NHS’ biggest weapon against flu is soap.

jamoncrumpets · 28/11/2022 14:56

Quite a bit of people on this thread haven't been reliably informed about the dangers of raw fish and raw egg. Neither will hurt you if you ingest even microscopic amounts.

Hens are vaccinated against salmonella. And you would have to eat more than a few mouthfuls of raw fish to risk any parasitic contamination.

I wouldn't lick a raw chicken breast, and I do practice good hand hygiene to prevent cross contamination when I cook, but freaking out over a child touching a piece of raw fish is completely disproportionate to the risk.

Also, the child washed their hands.

They. Washed. Their. Hands.

'Antibac' isn't more effective than soap at removing germs from hands.

RandomBanto · 28/11/2022 14:59

Oceanmoonandstars · 17/11/2022 18:13

@caroleanboneparte that's OK no offence taken. Yes I can suffer with anxiety mostly to do with the children. I suffered years of infertility so I tend to be hyper vigilant about their safety

Kindly you need to get that under control. You're at risk of potentially developing anxiety/OCD etc within them which is not healthy, you're also at risk at pushing them away as they grow if you're constantly freaking out about stuff. 'No jenny don't touch the sand/soil/ballpit/flowers/paint they're dirty!' You'll never get any good activities done or enjoy your time with them. Relax!

jamoncrumpets · 28/11/2022 15:01

I've just had a peek at your other posts OP, where you worry about why your children need the flu vaccine this year and what risks there are around that, and how patches of black mould in your home might harm your children, and I mean this really kindly, as one very anxious person to another, you have got to find a way to get a grip on your anxiety.

It's not easy. I struggle with it every day. But this anxiety will swallow you.

Please see the GP.

If you're in such a state over this, god knows how you would have coped when, 70 years ago, the doctor told my DM to feed me raw lamb's liver because I was anaemic. I confess I haven't eaten it, raw or cooked since.

They eat raw fish eyes on I'm a Celeb, seems fine! 😂

zingally · 28/11/2022 16:37

You've seen what 2 year olds touch all the rest of the time right? A little bit of fish will be fine.

Lilabelle22 · 28/11/2022 16:46

I appreciate all your replies. If my worrying is unjustified why do they say on NHS website that under 5s at risk from food poisoning if its fine for them to handle raw fish and potentially get food poisoning. I just like to go by the book. Perhaps that's where I'm going wrong.

I also thought mumsnet was a place where you can go when you're not sure about things to get others experience

I am anxious sometimes granted but it's comes with terroritory sometimes

I think one of the lessons you learn early on with having kids is that absolutely nothing is by the book.

Yes and this seems to have been glossed over - the dad washed his hands with fairy liquid straight after he touched it.

Christmashorse · 28/11/2022 16:53

I used to eat bacon rashers from the package. Unsmoked, smoked - any.
It never occurred to me that I shouldn’t eat it, I just loved it, also salmon from the packing, just loved the sleazy wet taste of it.
until my then future DH told what I’m eating raw pork bacon?
I still don’t know if it did any harm to me?
