Toddler raw meat freaking out

Oceanmoonandstars · 17/11/2022 17:45

DH told me ds 2 yrs old helped him cook dinner while I was out

I asked what and he said he put raw salmon on the pan.

I asked if he washed his hands he just said yeah with a little bit of fairy liquid

I'm freaking out as surely he should of used anti bac??

Anyone's else's little one handle raw meat to help cooking?

I'm so upset but trying to not let it show. I know it's important for under 5s to avoid food poisoning. He's also had his hands in his mouth all evening..

He’ll be fine. It’s should have not should of.,

Small children eat worse and survive.

FlounderingFruitcake · 17/11/2022 18:37

Well you shouldn’t eat salmon raw unless it’s sushi grade, which I’m assuming this wasn’t. But he didn’t eat it, he touched it and then he washed his hands. So total non issue. And how lovely he’s helping his dad cook, don’t let anxiety ruin it.

70billionthnamechange · 17/11/2022 18:40

Couple of harsh people here. Well, one. You're obvs a little anxious and I feel for you for that but honestly don't worry, my kid licks the floor and all sorts and they're semi ok

WeWereInParis · 17/11/2022 18:45

I'd be more concerned if he'd only used anti-bac, rather than proper soap

@caroleanboneparte that's OK no offence taken. Yes I can suffer with anxiety mostly to do with the children. I suffered years of infertility so I tend to be hyper vigilant about their safety

Please dont transfer this onto your child. You are being way ott. He did a nice thing with his dad, don't make an issue and ruin things like this.

There is no such thing as sushi grade. It has no legal or food safety definition. Anyone can put sushi grade on a label or packaging. It does not mean it has been treated any differently to fish without such a label. It is simply marketing.

Fairislefandango · 17/11/2022 18:58

Why would you think washing up liquid wasn't adequate? Presumably you use it to wash things which have had raw food on? Anti-bac is not necessary.

Mariposista · 17/11/2022 18:59

first child by any chance?

bellac11 · 17/11/2022 19:02

I wouldnt matter even if it was raw meat rather than fish. Soap is good, anti bac is unnecessary.

Proamble · 17/11/2022 19:03

My toddler has eaten raw salmon and raw beef. They always pinch food off my plate. They’ve also inadvertently eaten a granule of cat litter. They’re absolutely fine. You can’t stop them, especially when they’re playing outside and try and play with dirt, puddles, etc, then put their hands in their mouth. Apparently it’s good for their immune system!!

HairyMcLarie · 17/11/2022 19:04

I know plenty of toddlers who almost live on sushi!

But then again he didn't eat it soo...

YukoandHiro · 17/11/2022 19:04

If the salmon was fresh you're fine - cerviche!

Magentax · 17/11/2022 19:07

What do they do or not do that makes sushi grade salmon different to salmon?

Stickmansmum · 17/11/2022 19:07

I think you need to rethink all the antibaccing. Humans are actually naturally able to function in the world, and immune systems need to be built. It’s fundamental. To both physical and mental health.

jannier · 17/11/2022 19:07

What a great thing for dad to do, cooking real food is one of the best ways to encourage eating a wide variety of foods. Brilliant

Deep freeze it to kill off any potential bugs

FlounderingFruitcake · 17/11/2022 19:18

Sorry posted too soon- also caught quickly and bled/gutted (sounds grim I know sorry) quickly! And then deep freeze.

Phos · 17/11/2022 19:19

Fairy liquid is fine, its soap.

My kid was eating salmon sushi at that age and was fine so I doubt touching it will lead to illness unless its off!

Phos · 17/11/2022 19:20

That said we only got sashimi grade salmon which as someone else said, this might not have been.

MrsMitford3 · 17/11/2022 19:21

My DD ate a bag of goat food at Odds Farm at around that age.

DC are very robust little things...

ChocHotolate · 17/11/2022 19:24

My DS ate half of a (still frozen) fish finger when he was a toddler. Strange kid really

Dramaalpacas · 17/11/2022 19:28

perfectly safe hygiene wise but I probably wouldn’t use fairy liquid on a toddlers skin regularly! It would dry my hands out.

milawops · 17/11/2022 19:29

Mines been eating sushi with me once a week since she turned 1. Your little one will be fine.
The first time my mum caught me eating raw sausage meat I was about 2 and I've survived into adulthood despite my continued occasional snacking on it. Kids usually have stomachs like steel traps.

Flamingogirl08 · 17/11/2022 19:34

I don't want to sound mean but this isn't a normal reaction. It's absolutely fine

You do know that your children aren't somehow more precious to you because you struggled with infertility yeah? Do you really think that, had you conceived them without effort, you'd view them as replaceable?
