Toddler raw meat freaking out

Oceanmoonandstars · 17/11/2022 17:45

DH told me ds 2 yrs old helped him cook dinner while I was out

I asked what and he said he put raw salmon on the pan.

I asked if he washed his hands he just said yeah with a little bit of fairy liquid

I'm freaking out as surely he should of used anti bac??

Anyone's else's little one handle raw meat to help cooking?

I'm so upset but trying to not let it show. I know it's important for under 5s to avoid food poisoning. He's also had his hands in his mouth all evening..

Absolutely fine, he didn’t eat raw meat. He handled it and washed his hands appropriately after.

HappyAsASandboy · 17/11/2022 19:36

No issue at all. Raw fish and raw meat is fine for kids to handle as long as they get used to washing their hands with soap and water afterwards (doesn't even need to be hot water as long as there's soap and proper washing ....)

TinySaltLick · 17/11/2022 19:37

You can eat fish raw, so this isn't an issue

Think of all the other crap which goes in the mouth of a child, they lick the wheels of the pram if given half a chance

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/11/2022 19:40

He touched sashimi, like millions of Japanese kids (who then eat it). Soap is fine, don’t worry.

toomuchlaundry · 17/11/2022 19:40

Did he eat it cooked for his tea?

arethereanyleftatall · 17/11/2022 19:42

Babies eat sand op. They eat anything they can get their hands on. Food which can actually be eaten raw, which might be on their hands, even after they have been washed, it's such an overreaction.
I don't think it's fair to dismiss it as you're being anxious, it's isn't fair on your dh who did nothing wrong, nor your son who might be worried he can't do perfectly normally things in case you worry.

RambamThankyouMam · 17/11/2022 19:43

Get a grip, FFS.

Oceanmoonandstars · 17/11/2022 19:45

@toomuchlaundry yes he does

I thought supermarket fillets of salmon were different to those used for sushi

I needed some talking down. Achieved

No need for all the anti bac all the time. Personally I'd not even be concerned if they put their fingers in their mouth straight after touching salmon let alone after having washed with a string detergent like fairy. Chicken yes (the fairy is still fine) but people eat salmon rare or raw

DWMoosmum · 17/11/2022 19:48

You do realise that he's picking literally everything up and putting it in his mouth. I think Raw salmon hands washed with Fairy is the least of your problems.

MasterCherry · 17/11/2022 19:54

Not an issue, as the OP clearly now understands. But why do some people on here have to be so nasty? I can't imagine speaking to a RL friend like that if they voiced this kind of anxiety.

shreddednips · 17/11/2022 20:46

He'll be grand, fairy liquid will kill bacteria as well, if not better, than anything labelled as anti-bac. I wouldn't even be too worried if he put his fingers in his mouth without washing his hands. My DS has licked all sorts; I know someone whose baby licked a dead lizard and both are in rude health.

It's really hard feeling so anxious about them, I had similar anxieties when DS was small- not about cleanliness in my case but other things. I don't mean this at all in a mean way, but it might be a good idea to talk these feelings through with a therapist. I found it really helpful and can now distinguish between actual danger and things I just perceived to be dangerous.

Is the question why do people interact in a different way when depersonalised using text communications on a pseudo anonymous forum with strangers on a subchannel explicitly set up to debate often thorny, provocative and polarising issues?

Yeah

TinySaltLick · 17/11/2022 22:52

MasterCherry · 17/11/2022 22:41

Yeah

Impossible to tell really

RobertaFirmino · 17/11/2022 22:53

Perhaps you might like to have a look at what the indigenous population of Northern Canada have eaten for over a thousand years. Hopefully you will find it reassuring.

Haffiana · 17/11/2022 23:17

Washing up liquid is far more effective than antibac. Antibac does not remove actual dirt, you need soap or detergent for that.

If the antibac is alcohol based then washing up liquid is far more gentle as well.

Sushi salmon is ultra fresh. It will have been prepared and stored in a different way to fish that is intended for cooking.

I buy salmon for sushi from Waitrose. It is the same salmon as the stuff they sell on their fish counter, but when I order it for sushi, it is cut separately by the supplier in Scotland and boxed and sealed up to avoid cross contamination with their other salmon/fish and sent to my local Waitrose to be picked up by me within 24 hours.

The fuck? 😵‍💫

@caroleanboneparte that's OK no offence taken. Yes I can suffer with anxiety mostly to do with the children. I suffered years of infertility so I tend to be hyper vigilant about their safety

Yes, those of us that have no fertility issues don't really give a shit when it comes to safety, we can just pop out another if they die!

Lilabelle22 · 28/11/2022 05:05

I am OP name changed for another post. So following this incident Ds woke up in the early evening after handling the raw salmon having pooed himself which he never does, he has also had frequent urgent bowel movements (up to 6 times a day) with mucus present since. Due to the presence of mucus and change in frequency he has a suspected bacterial infection (likely food borne) so we need the doctor to send off stool samples to verify in case something else. I really appreciated everyone's responses and they helped greatly at the time but it seems perhaps some of my worrying was justified.

Rainingnow · 28/11/2022 05:34

That's a real shame! But - coincidence or some other fault in food hygiene. You and your DH ate the same fish didn't you, and obviously were OK or you'd have mentioned it. Hand washing is absolutely fine to ensure food hygiene, as people explained when you posted. We aren't all splurging anti-bac on our hands when we cook, nor are chefs in restaurants.

Rainingnow · 28/11/2022 05:35

Sorry, I realise that you're worried that he put his hands in his mouth after handling the fish and washing his hands. The same applies.

FurAndFeathers · 28/11/2022 05:41

Then you should probably educate yourself on what is actually safe.

soap/fairy liquid is more effective at cleaning than ‘antibac’ (whatever the fuck that is?!?)

Lilabelle22 · 28/11/2022 09:38

Seems highly unlikely to be a coincidence. When mucus in poo is googled salmonella is one of the top causes. Plus you don't know if he had it under his nails and I'm only taking my husbands word for how thoroughly he cleaned his hands. Just letting MN'ers know it can still happen..
