Went on a first date with a guy I met online last night, went out for dinner. When I got there I definitely found him attractive. However when it came to ordering drinks he ordered himself a glass of milk.

I've honestly never came across someone doing that in a restaurant and I just think it's really odd and really put me off him. I have tried to work out why this was such a turn off and I can't come up with a reason it just made me feel a bit yuck.

AIBU? It's just so odd on a first date I feel.

Maybe he gets bad heartburn/acid reflux - milk can often help with that.

LifeWithStars · 16/11/2022 12:42

It would have to be plant based ‘milk’ if I was dating him 😅 but I don’t see the issue with it. Its unusual but if he’s otherwise nice, it’s not something that would bother me.

If you don’t like it though, that’s fine. You can reject someone in the dating world for any reason you like.

Sandra1984 · 16/11/2022 12:44

Jeffrey Dahmer vibes.

😂

Where are we, Skyrim? Such a weird thing to judge someone on.

This!

I mean if it turns you off it is what it is, but there’s fuck all wrong with having milk with a meal.

roarfeckingroarr · 16/11/2022 12:44

I would find that very strange.

I'm also put off by adults drinking squash.

SallyWD · 16/11/2022 12:45

Was he Dutch or European? Dutch people often have a glass of milk with lunch and dinner.

I’m with you on the squash thing.

OldFan · 16/11/2022 12:47

It's a turn off as it's usually something kids drink in general, rather than adults.

I did know someone in the TA who used to do that, but he was very boyish. It has nutritional value.

unknown10 · 16/11/2022 12:47

Did he hold his knife and fork in the "wrong" hands too?

That is illegal as is ordering milk

TortugaRumCakeQueen · 16/11/2022 12:48

MILK? MILK?

Uurgh, what is he, 4 years old?

Total turn off for me, I'm afraid.

I'd also be turned off if he ordered a soft drink (if it was night time).

IglesiasPiggl · 16/11/2022 12:50

Definitely a bit odd but if you liked him otherwise I would go on another date.

funrunning · 16/11/2022 12:51

Yep. It’s odd.

TortugaRumCakeQueen · 16/11/2022 12:51

He'll be asking you to warm it up, and tuck him in to bed next.

PortiasBiscuit · 16/11/2022 12:52

Wouldn’t turn a hair.. no wonder so may if you are single!

Septemberintherain · 16/11/2022 12:52

Dh often has a big glass of milk before going out to eat of drink, says it lines his stomach.
Maybe he knew the menu and had already decided on the Cajun wraps and had the milk to avoid any acid etc.
If you found him attractive and got on well I wouldn’t write him off just yet.

CitizenofMoronia · 16/11/2022 12:53

Think your waving your own red flag there tbh, if all hes done wrong is drink milk on a date your winning

pinheadlarry · 16/11/2022 12:53

Depends.. did he get a milk moustache?
I must be weird because this would turn me on

RaininSummer · 16/11/2022 12:53

Unusual but perhaps he is a nutrition freak.

Because teetotallers are worse human beings than drunk drivers?

ClareBlue · 16/11/2022 12:54

In rural Ireland it is not uncommon at all to have milk with a family meal both children and adults. Plenty carry it on to adulthood and when going out. I often see adults drinking pints of milk in restaurants around here. If you want it you will get it no problem. But everyone has things that put them off someone as a potential partner and not much you can do but move on if it is an issue for you.

TurtleTriplets · 16/11/2022 12:54

I would suspect he suffers with heartburn. Why didn't you ask him?

You need to go for a second date just so we all know if it happens again.

Or because…wait for it…some of us don’t want to date teetotallers OR drunk drivers. 🤷🏽‍♀️😂

HermioneKipper · 16/11/2022 12:55

I’d feel the same!

I went on a first date with a really gorgeous bloke and he ordered a Diet Coke. Awful but I found it so off putting for some reason. No idea why. I wouldn’t have been impressed by a pint of Stella either so I’m clearly very unreasonable!

My local (rural Irish) chip shop sells little pint bottles of milk to have with your snack box!

What was awful- the fact that it was DIET Coke, or that it was a soft drink?
