Went on a first date with a guy I met online last night, went out for dinner. When I got there I definitely found him attractive. However when it came to ordering drinks he ordered himself a glass of milk.

I've honestly never came across someone doing that in a restaurant and I just think it's really odd and really put me off him. I have tried to work out why this was such a turn off and I can't come up with a reason it just made me feel a bit yuck.

AIBU? It's just so odd on a first date I feel.

columbo83 · 16/11/2022 11:32

I'd have asked him why he was drinking milk

OneCup · 16/11/2022 11:34

Green flag for me! Better than something boring like wine.

FictionalCharacter · 16/11/2022 11:34

I’d find that odd. Was it on the menu? It’s not normally. Usually if you want a non alcoholic drink you order something from the menu.

Castaspell · 16/11/2022 11:36

Yes it would put me off but I can't decide why! I think it's such an unusual thing to order I'd assume fussy eater or might have other weird habits. It's sort of gross and baby ish isn't it

Thepeopleversuswork · 16/11/2022 11:37

It is a bit odd. I like the idea in theory (and definitely refreshing that it doesn't have to be booze). But it is a bit child-like.

Hillrunning · 16/11/2022 11:38

We need more context. In a cafe it wouldn't be so odd. Was it on the menu? What food were you having with it?

I like milk with my pizza but would probably reserve that for once i knew a person and stick to having it at home.

I don't think it would turn me off but I wouldn't particularly want to kiss someone right after a glass of milk

Curryinnohurry · 16/11/2022 11:39

I would find this odd, but think I would question myself more than him. I.e, why do I find this odd? It's just a drink that plenty of people drink at home.

It's not like he ordered a Fruit Shoot 😂

KimberleyClark · 16/11/2022 11:39

Is he teetotal?

Dita73 · 16/11/2022 11:40

He didn’t ask for it to be warmed up did he?!

teslaplayer · 16/11/2022 11:42

He ate Cajun chicken crepes but he ordered the milk before he even looked at the menu.

OP posts:
Bookworm20 · 16/11/2022 11:46

It is an odd choice.
Unless he knew beforehand he'd be ordering a really spicy dish as milk helps with that!

He quite likely looked at the menu already online before your date. I often do that when I eat out as otherwise I take an age to order.

Did you not comment on his milk choice?

Bookworm20 · 16/11/2022 11:47

Did he drink anything else during the evening or literally just ordered one glass of milk?

ShesaWitch · 16/11/2022 11:49

Maybe he has a stomach issue with spicy food. I would have asked him about it. It's unusual but not a turn off for me personally. I'd rather milk over booze any day to be honest.

Noideawhatusername · 16/11/2022 11:52

It must be more common than we think since the restaurant actually served it.

Bluetrews25 · 16/11/2022 11:54

A long time ago a pub near where I grew up had milk on draught.
Dick Hudson's, West Yorkshire.
You weren't there were you, OP?

Bemyclementine · 16/11/2022 11:56

I'd find it odd, would probably have mentioned it. I'm not sure why though. Just that in general adults don't drink milk with evening meals?

abblie · 16/11/2022 11:57

Why is it off putting there may be a perfect explanation as to why he ordered milk 1) MEDICAL or cos the poor man just likes milk with his dinner ffs but as usual the mumsnet judgemental crew take full force

Mindthegap725 · 16/11/2022 11:59

Is he Dutch? Or was he brought up in the Netherlands? Fairly common there.

AntiSocial6DaysAWeek · 16/11/2022 12:04

Maybe he just prefers milk. I do too when at home, never ordered it with a meal so get why you might think it's odd but not the worst thing someone could do. It's only milk, he didn't order a pint of blood.

blackpearwhitelilies · 16/11/2022 12:05

My DH orders quite strange things in restaurants - ie he'll ask for a latte to drink with his main meal. But that would never put me off him. I feel a bit sorry for the guy, actually. I certainly can't see how having a glass of milk is 'gross' as one poster said. It's all pretty harmless.

DontSuitAJumpsuit · 16/11/2022 12:05

I don't think I'd even notice this!

Would probably prefer a milk drinker to a lager drinker though.

rainyskylight · 16/11/2022 12:08

milk is high in protein and is recommended as a post work out drink. Maybe he was at the gym earlier and wanted to take edge of his hunger with a high protein-low-sugar drink.

Underanothersky · 16/11/2022 12:09

Where are we, Skyrim? Such a weird thing to judge someone on.

CartoonLlama · 16/11/2022 12:09

I mean, yeah, it’s a bit odd. But I think going through life and feeling inhibited about making harmless choices like that is worse. If I wanted to order milk and worried about the other person thinking it was weird I would probably tell myself that was something to overcome, and instead judge anyone who judged me for it. But obvs if it’a a turn-off, that is what it is.

NoTimeforManiacs · 16/11/2022 12:09

Did he have a spicy curry and was trying to front it out that it wasn’t too strong?
