AIBU?

To be totally turned off by this?

Went on a first date with a guy I met online last night, went out for dinner. When I got there I definitely found him attractive. However when it came to ordering drinks he ordered himself a glass of milk.

I've honestly never came across someone doing that in a restaurant and I just think it's really odd and really put me off him. I have tried to work out why this was such a turn off and I can't come up with a reason it just made me feel a bit yuck.

AIBU? It's just so odd on a first date I feel.

I’m tickled by the Dutch disagreement- I used to work for a massive Dutch company and can confirm that they used to drink milk
with their lunch at meetings so I’m surprised if that was just our company. Maybe it’s a regional thing, this was a suburb of Amsterdam.

Did they drink it with dinner, though? As I think that’s what the Dutch commenters are saying is a big nope.

Ah no fair point - can’t recall anyone ordering milk with dinner. It’s relevant to people saying it’s just for children or makes people smell of old milk though! These were high flying very unchildish men.

It’s conditioning that makes you feel weird about it. It could be that he is a free thinker who knows his own mind and doesn’t need alcohol. I’d definitely give him another chance. He might be too far on the weird scale but you never know unless you get to know him a bit more.

Well you are right to try and work out why it’s putting you off him. It could be that it unconsciously linked into another odd thing about him which you perceived.

I don’t see there being any particular requirement of drink ordered on first date I find that a weird concept. But if someone is a complete stranger we pick up on everything for clues.

if you’re inferring that “normal” would be alcohol well quite a lot of people have an allergy to it.

I’m team ‘drinking milk is rank’ and have discovered on this thread that I am also anti squash and fizzy drinks (at any time) and hot beverages with any drink that isn’t breakfast. It’s been a transformative learning experience. 😂

Speaking personally I'm also Team No Milk (except in cereal), Team No Squash and Team No Fizzy Soft Drinks (under any circumstances, absolutely gross).

I just can't fathom having any feelings about someone else consuming things I don't personally like, though. The leap from "I find drinking milk weird/gross" to "you drink milk therefore you are weird/gross" is the confusing thing.

Hello, teammate! Shall we get shirts made? 😂

And I agree re the leap, but I don’t think that’s how it works. It’s more ‘drinking milk = visceral ick’ and you’ve gone off the person. Not ‘what a weird gross man’, more ‘this person did X and I am no longer attracted to him.’ I think that’s what the first few dates are for, really, consciously and unconsciously evaluating the other person.

Lots of people have tried to explain ‘why’ the milk thing is an issue, but I suspect for lots of people there is no conscious ‘why’. There’s just a switch in people’s heads that goes ‘nope’ to certain things, and it’s different things for different people. This things are ‘put’ there by sociocultural programming, personal experiences and, to a certain extent, nature. But so is everything else we think, feel and do. So, everybody let your freak flag fly and say ‘nope’ to whoever and whatever you want. 😁

I hate milk. Hate it. So I’m quite disgusted by seeing people drink it.

Why are grown mammals, drinking the milk of another species meant for their own young?

Utterly grim. No second date from me.

Also, a grown man asking for something that is not on the menu or displayed at the bar would annoy me. Just order what is on offer.

I'm not posh but surely there is a certain etiquette when dining out.

They aren't nipping in Tesco for a meal deal before going for a walk by the river.

The same reason they eat its flesh or u fertilised eggs. But if you're vegan I can understand why that grosses you out but I'd prob make sure. I was oy dating another vegan if the sight of a cheese sandwich is going to gross you off lunch

It’s quality protein. Is he health conscious?

This wouldn’t bother me. I know quite a few runners who do the same when in training for a big race. It’s better than sugary soda or similar.

It doesn't sound like ordering it was an issue tho? This isn't a man demanding they find him some milk now or else.

I'm not sure I'd prefer someone choking down a glass or wine or thinking they could only have water because of etiquette on a privste date 🙄

I'm not suggesting they choke on a glass of wine. There are many options to drink. Surely a grown man doesn't just drink milk and nothing else.

And I’m still laughing reading all these replies. I think drinking cow’s milk as a human, especially an adult human who should know better, is revolting. It was intended for calves and is not good for humans. It was one of the quickest ways to get dysentery when I was growing up around the world so it always put me off. It also can go off way too easily to be worth the risk. Anyone wonder why there is so much lactose intolerance around? (Hint: because cow’s milk is not meant for humans…) Cheese, on the other hand, is usually very low lactose so is a bit easier on the digestive system and cream is much lower than plain milk so is not as bad. For a grown man to drink glasses of milk in a restaurant is definitely weird and is a signal that the guy has no common sense or ability to read a room at best. The fellow should hire a wet nurse if he needs milk that badly. “Bitty” and “bubbly milk” indeed 😂! It is a huge red flag. Run away, run away!

Do you have a source for this that you can link? As a quick Google indicates that all reputable medical resources are on Team Water.

it was a bbc tv program about 5-10 years ago so no and yes google so fantastic at being factually accurate, just like wiki eye roll may I also point out that a lot of electrolyte drinks that are not plain water but it contains other things "potassium salts" etc which are also found to be more hydrating than water for the same reasons I explained. water molecules attach to the proteins and salts and allow the body to hold onto it.
Which ever OP is still a young woman who really needs to learn not to judge on frivolous things like drinking milk .. probably going to end up with a jerk or alone.

I'm amazed by the strong reactions! A glass of milk then water with a meal sounds fine to me rather than getting hammered on lager. Sensible healthy choice if you don't want to drink alcohol. Good he is confident enough to drink what he likes. Obviously not a fit for you if you're so judgemental about it though and perhaps leave him alone to find someone who won't have an issue with it.

Will people stop saying that if you are a lager drinker you are going to get hammered or have an alcohol problem.

If you Google reputable medical sources (as stated), such as the NHS or academic research on the topic, yes, factually accurate. Not my fault you don’t know how to use the internet. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Your faux scientific ‘explanation’ based on a tv show that you allegedly watched a decade ago is hardly immutable fact. But, carry on.

OP can choose to date or not based on any criteria she decides, whether or not said criteria is to your liking. Who she ends up with is entirely her business.

No, apparently you’re either a milk drinker or a fully fledged alcoholic. There is no middle ground. 😂

It's certainly not spicy enough to require milk Grin
