Went on a first date with a guy I met online last night, went out for dinner. When I got there I definitely found him attractive. However when it came to ordering drinks he ordered himself a glass of milk.

I've honestly never came across someone doing that in a restaurant and I just think it's really odd and really put me off him. I have tried to work out why this was such a turn off and I can't come up with a reason it just made me feel a bit yuck.

AIBU? It's just so odd on a first date I feel.

It wouldn't put me off. His choice would you react the same if he ordered a cup of tea? Milk is the best thing to drink to keep you hydrated.

I have recently figured out if my daughter is having a lot of cluster siezures. If she has a drink of milk she stops having them. It might sound odd to you but there may be a genuine health reason for him choosing to drink milk. It's also better to drink milk than water when eating spicy food.

Toria33 · 17/11/2022 22:28

Did you know that milk is actually the most hydrating drink you can drink? The protein in it makes it work through your system slower. Not only are yta, your weird and judging

MrsFrTedCrilly · 17/11/2022 22:29

Fairly normal for rural Ireland , was he Irish?

IMissVino · 17/11/2022 22:33

Dreamsoffreedomjoyandpeace · 17/11/2022 22:26

So drinking milk is either ick or it is socially acceptable only under certain circumstances?

And most of you think the man is weird…..

Milk is nutritious, cheap, relatively low in sugar and delicious….I drink it every day.

I can only speak for myself, but the idea of drinking straight milk at any point is pretty revolting to me.

Why do people need to give a reason for ordering milk though? It's a drink, maybe he just likes it, this is such a weird thread 😂

Exactly - Clearly, it is available as a drink.
It is hardly wildly odd or far out...

It's reasonable for people to find it unusual especially if they do not take milk or its not part of their culture outside of childhood.

It might not be a common thing to do or something you're familiar with ... but

Do not conflate uncommon with unreasonable.

Also as others mention - glasses/pints of milk very popular in Netherlands and Ireland
(Nations with tall / masculine men)

Surely the most hydrating drink you can drink is water?

If he was Dutch, totally normal. Otherwise a sign of independence and knowing his own mind?

Or Irish!

Ishabella · 17/11/2022 22:40

Nope

at least he’s not getting drunk

RavenhairedRachel · 17/11/2022 22:45

Probably missing his bitty

NeatTigerFeet · 17/11/2022 22:49

Maybe he just wanted to drink milk...and kick ass...

Sorry couldn't resist.🤪

Yes it's a bit weird 😁

BestSelfBlah · 17/11/2022 22:51

Would give me the ick, not sure why.

A man has just logged this as well saying a woman ordered milk on a date Grin

I'm glad you picked up on this too because I could have sworn I read a thread like this yesterday posted from the man's perspective - something along the lines of my date had an issue with me ordering milk to drink. I think the user name was something like Milkyman but I can't find the thread now.

I once went on a date with a guy I'd met the week before, at a party. It was a beautiful, summer evening, and I managed to find a nice table outside the bar, with a lovely view. He was a bit late, but I got a glass of wine and enjoyed the ambience. I assumed that when he got there we'd have a laugh, get mildly pissed, and get to know each other a bit more.
When he finally turned up he ordered a pot of tea. I finished my wine and went home.

Nickmoul · 17/11/2022 22:56

Before you judge, ask. He may have ulcer or a medical reason or maybe he doesn’t drink alcohol. I don’t (much) and got sick of coke or lemonade. I tend to drink lager shandy. Milk is harmless and very neutral in flavour.
Ask him.

I’d have done the same. ☹️

BleuNoir · 17/11/2022 22:59

Find it weird it’s ok for him to order weird shit Diet Coke that’s made of complete crap and only been around for 150 years max but when he ordered milk, a healthy drink that humans have been drinking for 10,000 years he was condemned.

It seems like OP, you’ve been well and truly had by the modern day media who have infiltrated your brain to the point you can’t see the wood for the trees.

yes it’s a bit odd but I’d rather someone chose milk than Diet Coke. I really really hate that stuff.

WanderleyWagon · 17/11/2022 22:59

Wouldn't bother me at all. I've been known to order a glass of cold milk when I'm out.

SnowyPheasants · 17/11/2022 23:06

this is what my dp would order if he didn't feel odd about it.
live a little, and stop looking of cookie cutter people. we all have a lot to offer that isn't a cardboard cut out of reality.

SnowyPheasants · 17/11/2022 23:08

and if someone flounced because i ordered a pot of tea on a date i would consider myself to have dodged a bullet.

SkylightSkylight · 17/11/2022 23:09

Thegannethasfled · 16/11/2022 12:25

Ffs why the hell should that matter?! So he didn't want to drink he likes milk perhaps it was to settle his acid stomach who cares what matters is did you fancy him did you like him was it fun is he a nice person. Or do you prefer the wife beating child abandoning gaslighting unfaithful inconsiderate rude ones that order a pint instead. Fookin ell priorities

There aren't only two choices.

a grown man ordering milk, on a date, in a restaurant IS weird. I want to date a man, not a child.

dlizi4 · 17/11/2022 23:11

YABU
I do not think you liked him before he ordered the milk though

Zwicky · 17/11/2022 23:15

I like milk. There is about 30 feet of milk in my sainsbury’s which suggests lots of people like milk. I almost always order milk in an Indian restaurant and there is a Thai place near me that sells cold Horlicks which I always get when I go there. I drink tea with fish and chips and milkshake in burger places. I wouldn’t order milk with Chinese or Italian food but I don’t quite know why. I suppose the thing about sexual/romantic partners is that it’s easy/normal to be put off by something that isn’t quite logical and that wouldn’t bother you in a friend. That doesn’t mean that the thing is problematic in itself. It’s always best to go on a date as yourself though. Saves wasting everyone’s time.

Someone deciding that you’re not for them isn’t necessarily ‘flouncing’.

Not wasting time with someone to whom you’re ill suited is a good thing, but the whole ‘dodged a bullet’ framing always comes across as oddly bitter about it.
