Went on a first date with a guy I met online last night, went out for dinner. When I got there I definitely found him attractive. However when it came to ordering drinks he ordered himself a glass of milk.

I've honestly never came across someone doing that in a restaurant and I just think it's really odd and really put me off him. I have tried to work out why this was such a turn off and I can't come up with a reason it just made me feel a bit yuck.

AIBU? It's just so odd on a first date I feel.

He might suffer with heartburn.

Skydaze · 18/11/2022 02:58

Sounds like some of you could use the phrase "it's not wrong it's just different" - aka the golden rule for cross cultural relationships. Try it, a little tolerance goes a long way. You could be missing out on amazing people and experiences simply because you're too hung up on your own idea of what's "normal" (which I guarantee is weird to other cultures in multiple ways!)

ZiriForEver · 18/11/2022 03:07

My DP drinks milk at home as a small snack. I wouldn't mind if he did on a date, better than beer only guys.

Those who find it turning you off, would you see it the same if a woman asked for milk?

Thinking about it, if I were a guy, I might do it intentionally at the date. Just as a filtering for compatibility exercise. Someone would be fine with it, someone not and that's ok, just no the best pairing for both.

Indigoo03 · 18/11/2022 03:37

Protein ?

ganachee · 18/11/2022 03:52

This wouldn’t bother me at all.

LuckySantangelo35 · 18/11/2022 04:25

I would have the ick too

milk can give you stinky breath as well

I would rather my date had a beer or glass of wine but then I’m not of the alcohol hating, ‘
’anything more than a glass a month makes u an alcoholic’ mumsnet crew

LuckySantangelo35 · 18/11/2022 04:27

Ishabella · 17/11/2022 22:40

Nope

at least he’s not getting drunk

@Ishabella

people can drink alcohol without getting drunk u know

Whydidimarryhim · 18/11/2022 04:35

He may need it for medical reason - simple - just ask him - 😁

kateandme · 18/11/2022 05:18

Ooh could we ask for added nesquik ?

mjf981 · 18/11/2022 05:19

I wouldn't be turned off by it. If anything, I think its quite nice/different. I'd have asked him if he did that regularly in restaurants as a talking point.

TheLadyofShalott1 · 18/11/2022 06:27

Sorry, but I am too tired to read all these posts, so this has probably been said already.

I have a Hiatus Hernia, fruit based drinks (including wines), and any fizzy drinks, give me awful heartburn, and I am already on two prescribed Omeprazoles, and up to eight Gaviscons a day. Water, weak tea, milk, and curiously tomato juice, are the only drinks that I have discoved so far, that don't give me painful reflux. I do find it strange that I can eat most fruits without a problem - the fruit's flesh must somehow make a difference, maybe it is just because chewing produces mouth acids that help to neutralise the acid/alkaline's affect on my body.

Anyway, in a proper restaurant, rather than a fast food one, I would drink water, but it can be boring to just have water all of the time, so in a fast food restaurant I will often have milk as my drink instead (I can't stomach milkshakes either, they give me acid reflux too), and having been through the menopause I like to think that the milk might help my calcium levels as well!

The gentleman on the OP's date might have a similar problem to mine, and maybe he hates water, or maybe he has enough self-confidence that If he fancies a glass of milk, that is what he will have. If it is the latter I think I would actually find his self-confidence sexy, as long as he wasn't arrogant as well, as I hate all arrogant people! If he, like me, had digestive problems then I would of course think it was fine as well. In another scenario, if I knew he was on the spectrum, but he was someone that I found attractive and interesting, then I would again have no problem with him drinking milk.

In fact I am not sure why a date drinking milk should be a problem at all? I suppose it would just seem strange to me if a blind date ordered a glass of milk, but why - except maybe because I am the only adult that I have ever known, to order a glass of milk whilst eating out - it would seem strange, I just don't know. I think that I would have to try and ask him as tactfully as possible, why he wanted to drink milk with his meal. Of course, that could easily backfire on me, if I was happy with his response, but he wasn't happy with me asking him in the first place!

N1no · 18/11/2022 06:40

I think we need more information: where are you and what nationality is he?

I have to disagree with some other comments saying that a fizzy drink would have been more common. It’s perhaps more common but it would have put me off.

DenaJT · 18/11/2022 06:44

There's various reasons for him doing this. Would you prefer it if he got sh**faced? It's an unusal choice, but isn't he more of a man for not following the crowd and buying what he likes as opposed to what society dictates? I think judging anyone on this alone is a bit knee jerk.

Newwardrobe · 18/11/2022 06:58

This would be a big tick for me , I love milk !

Lyver · 18/11/2022 07:00

Agapornis · 17/11/2022 23:29

@Lyver p.s. that said, I am having a lovely hot mug of anijsmelk right now

Oh, Love myself some Anijsmelk, haven't had that in so many many years..

@N1no

why would someone having a fizzy drink put you off?!

TheArtfulStodger · 16/11/2022 11:17

Is he Dutch? It's not abnormal.

completely usual.....my husband drinks milk, Karnemelk if in The Netherlands at the time.
I don’t think it’s weird at all

@DenaJT

there is a middle ground between drinking milk on a date and getting shit faced you know

TurquoiseBeach · 18/11/2022 07:15

It's completely illogical, but I think I'd feel exactly the same OP. Don't know why.

Toria33 · 18/11/2022 07:43

IMissVino · 17/11/2022 22:34

Surely the most hydrating drink you can drink is water?

Nope, I watched a study on it about 15 years ago as there is nothing attached to it it passes through the body very quickly and is quickly converted to urine, watery juice or juice is also more complex so goes through the system slower allowing the body to hold onto it more.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 18/11/2022 07:53

Stomach issues? Lining his stomach for some medical/digestive issue.
I would find it odd but if everything else was ok I’d attempt a second date. Bring a sachet of Nesquik with you to spice things up a notch? 😁

HRTQueen · 18/11/2022 07:57

Thatsplentyjack · 17/11/2022 23:20

That will be my eldest in a few years 🤣

Will be my ds too 😆

We both always order milk at McDonald’s/Five Guys I often have milk with curry at home so do my family (south Asian) ds always has milk with his dinner unless it’s fish

recently went for a Chinese meal ds wanted milk but talked him out of it, it just doesn’t go with Chinese food but with Cajun chicken it does

Elf25 · 18/11/2022 08:03

@teslaplayer is he maybe Dutch (or Dutch roots). A colleague working internationally told me once they have milk in meetings.

Pickytraveller1964 · 18/11/2022 08:15

I am absolutely crying with laughter. It sounds like the sort of thing that would happen on Curb Your Enthusiasm.

HonestButFair · 18/11/2022 08:37

Milk is full of nutritional value - I suggest you look into this because if he’s what I think he is, he will be very fit and healthy. Look up carnivoremd on Instagram and thank me later! Raw milk and meat eating is HOT! If your date had ordered something vegan, I would have left.
