Went on a first date with a guy I met online last night, went out for dinner. When I got there I definitely found him attractive. However when it came to ordering drinks he ordered himself a glass of milk.

I've honestly never came across someone doing that in a restaurant and I just think it's really odd and really put me off him. I have tried to work out why this was such a turn off and I can't come up with a reason it just made me feel a bit yuck.

AIBU? It's just so odd on a first date I feel.

@Thegannethasfled
Ffs why the hell should that matter?! So he didn't want to drink he likes milk perhaps it was to settle his acid stomach who cares what matters is did you fancy him did you like him was it fun is he a nice person. Or do you prefer the wife beating child abandoning gaslighting unfaithful inconsiderate rude ones that order a pint instead. Fookin ell priorities

I don't know what kind of life you've had or the people you have been around but not all men who drink alcohol are as you have described. My DH would order a pint but he is hardworking, kind & funny.

My DP drinks milk at home as a small snack. I wouldn't mind if he did on a date, better than beer only guys.

Those who find it turning you off, would you see it the same if a woman asked for milk?

Thinking about it, if I were a guy, I might do it intentionally at the date. Just as a filtering for compatibility exercise. Someone would be fine with it, someone not and that's ok, just no the best pairing for both.

No. Because for me it's just the thought their breath will smell off sour milk if I kiss them that's why I find it off putting 😬🤣 there will no doubt be things I do which put men off, just one of those things isn't it.

Do you feel the same about men who drink lattes? That would cut down the pool quite a bit I’d have thought.

ArmyofMunn · 18/11/2022 08:58

It's just very unsophisticated - it gives the impression he's hardly ever eaten in a restaurant and therefore hardly been on many dates or even had a relationship before.

Milk is a great recovery drink for sports people. It's milk, get over it.

I presume and hope he'd had a shower and changed after doing his sport for the date. I'm sure he would have also had time to have his milk fix too.

emptythelitterbox · 18/11/2022 09:15

I'm over here cackling picturing a grown man on a date ordering a babyccino

gannett · 18/11/2022 09:24

SkylightSkylight · 17/11/2022 23:09

There aren't only two choices.

a grown man ordering milk, on a date, in a restaurant IS weird. I want to date a man, not a child.

The weird thing is conflating milk-drinking with being a child.

Just because you have particular and specific cultural connotations that you can't get past, doesn't mean there's anything inherently childish about milk.

Herewegoagain1990 · 18/11/2022 09:27

Why does it matter? You shouldn't judge someone based on something as trivial as that for goodness sake! If he seems like a nice person where is the problem? Same goes for the squash comment, it's pathetic.

TheWitchCirce · 18/11/2022 09:47

My husband often orders a pint of milk. He likes milk.

DesertIslandCondiment · 18/11/2022 09:48

The great milk divide - I wish OP had done the voting thing.

Heyhoitsme · 18/11/2022 09:52

Irish farming types drink milk with their dinner. It wouldn't put me off.

OrangePomander · 18/11/2022 09:59

A hard no from me, even the smell of milk makes me feel sick.

Margerine78 · 18/11/2022 10:07

Ha ha ha! I love the 'icks' women get. I had a boyfriend once who didn't drink hot drinks. Turned me off so much.

If only they knew they were childish u manly types eh 😂😂

It's just very unsophisticated - it gives the impression he's hardly ever eaten in a restaurant and therefore hardly been on many dates or even had a relationship before.

Or he goes to them often enough to be comfortable ordering something he likes rather than trying hard to fit in. And "not gone to restaurants much so never had a proper relationship" is a huge leap. DH and I have always been more pub and movie types. Now I get that we're not classy enough to date you but it says nothing of our relationship history

It's produced by cow's for their calves, that's probably why people link milk to babies what with calves being baby cows.

And majority of adults who drink tea and coffee out it in there. Fair enough if you've not drunk milk since you were 2, but people who drink it in drinks then slag off adults for being childish are hypocritical

JenG256 · 18/11/2022 10:34

Maybe a health thing, or just a preference? Accept or move on.....

Skydaze · 18/11/2022 10:52

Do you have the same childish connotation with eggs? Dairy products like cheese and yoghurt? How about the literal flesh of animal babies like lamb and veal? I suspect not.

Making fun of or looking down on someone's food is far more childish imo, it has the distinct whiff of playground bully about it.

Nope, I watched a study on it about 15 years ago as there is nothing attached to it it passes through the body very quickly and is quickly converted to urine, watery juice or juice is also more complex so goes through the system slower allowing the body to hold onto it more.

Do you have a source for this that you can link? As a quick Google indicates that all reputable medical resources are on Team Water.

I love this thread for so many reasons. 😂

  • The fact that OP hasn’t been back in ages, but it’s not slowing anyone down.
  • The horror and ire with which some of you are responding to another woman’s dating ick. ‘SO YOU ONLY DATE ALCOHOLICS!’
  • All the ‘it’s common amongst the Dutch’ comments being robustly denied by all the actual Dutch people (who are being ignored).

It’s a perfect thread.

I've had a slow week in the office so it's keeping me entertained.

There is a such a divide too. The other sides totally don't get why the other side think how they do.

It is fairly amusing, especially how serious people are taking it 🤣🤣

I’m team ‘drinking milk is rank’ and have discovered on this thread that I am also anti squash and fizzy drinks (at any time) and hot beverages with any drink that isn’t breakfast. It’s been a transformative learning experience. 😂
